The Ladies Who Lunch (Part 3)

Some days only diner food will do. We were in Waterdown again and Angels Diner checked all the right boxes. Click.

We needed dark rye flour and Kerry is still hoping to find a griddle plate to use in her CSO at home. She has one in the CSO at work.  In the same plaza as Angels Diner is a thrift store and a Bulk Barn.  We got the rye flour but no luck on a griddle plate.

For Kerry the Amarillo chicken breast with beans and sauce picante.

For me liver and onions with fries and coleslaw. The liver was gorgeously cooked and they must’ve read my mind about the amount of onions on top.

Once or twice a year I love slumming it!

@Anna N, we have 5 diners, maybe 6 within 20 minutes of our house (NJ is the diner state). DH and I have a favorite "low brow" and "high brow" diner, and you are correct, sometimes nothing beats a good diner for a hearty basic meal.

I find for the most part that they excel at what they do. I don’t recall having a meal in a diner that didn’t live up to my expectations.  And they have the welcome mat figured out to a T.

Today we returned to Pintoh Cuisine for some warming Thai food.  It was bitterly cold here with gusty winds.

Yesterday Kerry and I found ourselves with errands to do in the far reaches of the Vaughn, Richmond Hill, Markham area of Toronto.  We decided on a return visit to

So these two ladies who lunch (me and @Kerry Beal) found ourselves in Streetsville at lunchtime today. While Kerry conducted some business I remained in the car googling  for a place where we could eat. It seems we were in the middle of another Little Italy but as one of us is trying to remain low carb, pizza and pasta didn’t seem like the best idea.  Further searching turned up this.  A small Thai/Chinese place.

Today with many errands to accomplish in many different parts of the GTA  (Greater Toronto Area) @Kerry Beal and I found ourselves running out of time.  Our planned lunch at a highly recommended Indian restaurant soon disappeared in the rearview mirror.

Having said that, for a change, and  because it only happens every blue moon or so, I enjoyed this:

Popeye’s Louisiana-style chicken.

B05E1E72-5ACA-43CD-8458-F4E4B6FA51C9.thumb.jpeg.f61b808872252284b74bbeb3db2f3e5c.jpeg

We each ate a thigh and I polished off the coleslaw which is hiding beneath the biscuit in the far corner on the right.

The chicken itsself supplied my salt requirements for at least the next 30 days. The biscuit, for only two bites, was good for at least another 30 days.

I’m not bringing up an issue with salt,  but because I don’t eat very much processed and/or fast food, the salt was front and center.  That is merely an observation not necessarily complaint.:)

But for dessert from  Francesca’s Bakery,    Sicilian-style cannoli (sheep’s milk). Believe it or not I have never had cannoli before!

@Anna N, those look like very fine cannoli!

I could easily become addicted but I wish they were about half the size. I would still eat both both halves but at different times. xD

These were a sweet without being sweet which I really, truly appreciated.

Hard to believe I’ve spent 70+ years without them.

They were indeed very tasty. The hubby and rug rat snarfed them down.

We actually have a Popeye's in town but I've never been there.

Now I'll have to make it a point to stop there when I go that far into Missoula.

I'm sure I'll find lots to like.

If you like your fried chicken a little hot and extra crunchy and moist and juicy, like I do, you'll love Popeye's. We had some outlets around here years ago, but they're all gone now. To me, Popeye's is the best fried chicken chain. Also for sides, I used to be able to get corn on the cob and fried okra. Both delicious! I never found it too salty, but I'm a salt aholic. You wouldn't want to eat it every day, but I could definitely do with some Popeye's right now. SO good.

When it’s cold enough to freeze the *#%*s off a brass monkey, only good Ramen will fix the problem. But a trip into Mississauga was not going to work too well for @Kerry Beal and me today.  It was just simply in the wrong direction. Fortunately for us Kenzo has opened a place in Hamilton!

Gyoza.  I believe the name for these is hantesuki gyoza (gyoza with wings)  referring to the “lace”  surrounding them.

We each ordered the same Ramen bowl variation  so only one photograph.

Yes, they might qualify as "hanetsuki gyoza". For a very long time (including my time in Japan) I was under the impression the name "hanetsuki" was referring to the net of the popular and remotely Badminton-like Japanese ball game. Until I learned that this bat-and-ball game is actually played without a net O.o

Today Kerry chose our lunch spot. She wanted to return to Celadon House.

Very strong ginger tea for Kerry but the photo is really about the cup which I thought was gorgeous.

Calamari with a vinegar garlic sauce that was so good I could have just drank it from the bowl.  That was just a little left after all the squid was gone and I poured it on to some rice.

We shared both main dishes. Our server brought us two bowls for the soup.

I can 't see any noodles in the soup but the pork and bok choy look delicious. Were they rice or wheat?
