The Ladies Who Lunch (Part 3)

 Today Kerry had some business in Hamilton so we decided to fall back on our favorite comfort food, pho.    I know you have all seen it all before and here it is again. xD

 Beef and chicken for Kerry.

 Well done and rare beef for me.

 Some of the requisite garnishes. We also used some housin and some Siracha.

 And we shared some fresh rolls with shrimp and a peanut dipping sauce. 

 

Just as an aside, some of the members of one of the local fire halls showed up to pick up some takeout (I thought cooking in the fire hall was a thing!).  And as they were leaving, six members of the Coast Guard showed up for lunch. Popular  place apparently for those in uniform of one kind or another.

Not all our choices for a lunch venue are wise!

 

Strangely this was in Denninger’s which is a European food store selling some very tasty food both fresh and ready to eat.  Stuff from their steam table belies their  skill otherwise.

BUT all was not lost.  While in there I purchased two jars of pickled herring and a loaf of ROGGENBROT (RYE BREAD).  Together with a bottle of Aalborg aquavit from my freezer I can look forward to a lunch  worthy of Valhalla.  Or perhaps I will make it dinner tonight.

I love Denninger's pickled herring.  I have two jars of it in my fridge right now.  I always bring some back with me whenever I'm down that way.  My sister will also bring me some when she comes up.  It is the only kind I buy.

Got caught up with one of my lady friends today. We met for lunch at the Gulf Freeway location of Houston’s Mambo Seafood.

We each had one of the Grilled Platters. I had the Mixed Grill with Bass fillets and 8 Gulf Shrimp and my lady friend had the 8 Grande Shrimp. The meal came with two sides - both of us chose the Shrimp Mambo Rice and Grilled Vegetables. Lots of leftovers to be used with dinner tonight!

 Those of you who are anxious to send Kerry off to Paris might keep in mind  that without Kerry I have nobody to lunch with.xDxD

 

 Kerry is still doing her jet lag eating program so today we needed protein ++ for lunch. A steakhouse would have fit the bill perfectly but none are open at lunchtime. So a diner seemed our next best option.  Hence we returned to Mo’s in Oakville.

 A roast beef dip and fries for me. 

 

Now I will confess for both of us. We had nibbled away at the calamari and the salad and it took quite some time for our entrees to arrive.  Time enough for our brains to register that we had already had enough to eat. 

 

 We asked for takeout containers, packed up our lunches and headed home. 

 

 I don’t think we have ever before packed up untouched meals. :blush:

Today, a lady friend and I met at The Rouxpour Restaurant and Bar at Baybrook for a leisurely meal to catch up with each other.

I had the Parmesan Crusted Tilapia with Jumbo Lump Crab and a Lemon Beurre Blanc, while my lady friend had the Creamy Pasta Rouxpour with Grilled Chicken (sorry, no photo of her plate).

 Kerry is about to fly away once more and leave me to my own devices. We managed to squeeze in a lunch today. We found a new place in Oakville called Celadon House.    It advertises itself as serving Asian comfort food

Here is a ladies lunch from last week.  If you follow the breakfast thread, you may have noticed that I was on a cruise in the Mediterranean.  The occasion was a celebration of my cousin's survival and recovery from leukemia and a bone marrow transplant 2 years ago.  I spent quite a few weeks with her in the hospital in Houston and we often talked about this trip but she was so sick, it was hard to imagine.  It was wonderful to see her well enough to make those conversations a reality!   All the ladies at this lunch (and on the cruise) were friends of my cousin who, like me, had helped her out when she was sick.

 

While docked in Monte Carlo, Monaco, we drove the short distance to Nice and spent some time touring the markets.  Lots to look at....hope it's not too off-topic for this thread to share a few market photos.

All that certainly whetted our appetites so next, we drove to Èze and walked up the hill to Èze Village, a charming medieval village perched on a hilltop above the Mediterranean for our lovely lunch at Les Ramparts restaurant at the Chèvre d'Or hotel.

Entrance.  The hotel also has a restaurant of the same name with 2 Michelin stars.

We ate a the more casual Les Ramparts with outdoor seating, overlooking the Mediterranean.  This is the view as we were escorted to our table.  A bit hazy, but still beautiful.  There are clearer photos on the hotel website.

My dish of pasta with tomato, olives and parmesan was lovely but the winner was the fresh herb ravioli with shellfish and a Menton lemon foam.  I'm sorry I missed getting a photo of that.  Here's my dish..

Desserts were in a glass case and we were asked to visit and make our selections. I think we got one of everything to share.  Here are a few of the choices

Thank you!  I was worried it might be a bit OT for this thread so I'm glad you enjoyed reading.  It was a very, very special lunch and we had a couple of hours afterwards to wander through the town before heading back to the ship. A magical day!

I do love the market in Nice. It's hard to bring back everything you see - though I have tried. Did you buy any Callison?

 

What a fabulous lunch and what a wonderful reason for a celebration - I've been to Èze before - but never eaten there.

I agree!  When I win the lottery, I will re-visit Nice and rent a place with a kitchen so I can really shop the markets and enjoy the offerings.

And no, I didn't buy any Callison, or much of anything in Nice.  I was on a bit of a mission to find some napkins/serviettes to match some that I'd purchased in Cannes years ago.  I found some, but the print wasn't quite as nice as the first ones, then lost my way in the winding streets and had to dash back to our meeting place, empty handed!

In trying to regain my bearings, this sign was particularly unhelpful xD

Was the roasted corn tea like the roasted corn and roasted barley tea that Korean restaurants serve? Or was it just corn? (I don't see anything else that you ate leaning towards Korea; is this indicative of your choices, or reflective of the menu in general?)

Last Thursday, my two sisters and I flew into Phoenix (we live in different parts of the country), rented a car and drove down to Tucson to visit for a few days with our dad and his wife. After spending Friday morning at the fabulous Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, the three of us stopped at Angelo’s Pizza & Gyros on Ruthrauff Road for lunch. Each of us ordered the Gyros, so I only had to take one photo! :D

Pretty much just corn. I much prefer the roasted barley tea I must say.

The lady who lunches with me is home for just three days after returning from Paris and before flying off to Seattle!  As she attempts to minimize the effects of jet lag,  today was a day when protein was required for lunch. We spotted a new

Nandos in Burlington and decided that it would serve our purpose.

1/4 Chicken dark meat with lime and mango sauce  and a Caesar salad for Kerry.

 The same cut of chicken for me but with a lemon and herb sauce and I opted for some sautéed spinach as a side.

So I know you all enjoy following Chocdoc as she jets around the world. I,  on the other hand, am much happier when her feet on the ground in Burlington and I get to go out for lunch once weekxD

 

 Today we returned to Lemongrass, a favourite eating place that we haven’t been to for quite some time. (We were on a mission to find Modernist Bread ingredients.)

Thanks.  I thoroughly enjoyed it. The two ingredients we were after, the barley malt syrup and the diastatic malt powder.   Your local brew store is your friend!

 It is so good to have Kerry back from her travels so that we can enjoy lunch together again. Today it was cold enough for Indian and so we returned to our favourite Indian restaurant in Burlington, The Bombay Grill.
