Chilled cucumber & corn soup with avocado toasts from Melissa Clark's Dinner.  Cool and refreshing on a hot day like today.

My buttermilk was at that stage where it's probably OK for baking but I wasn't sure about drinking whole bowl so I used the suggested substitute of yogurt + milk with a mix of mint, parsley, basil and cilantro for the herbs. I wish I'd used more cilantro as I love it with cucumbers. Next time!

Met some Florida friends who we coming to visit us in Charlottesville VA for some wine tasting.  We were planning to take them to our favorite restaurant in Charlottesville – a South American rotisserie chicken (and MORE) place.  When we drove up, they were closed and moving to a bigger place next door.  So, we had lunch at another nearby favorite - Crozet Pizza.  This place opened in 1977 and we discovered it when Mr. Kim was in grad school at UVA.  It has remained one of our favorite pizzas, even though we live in Richmond.

We started with house-made hummus:

Excellent!

They still do great pizza:

Another lunch with our visitors - The Black Sheep in Richmond.  This place specializes in ENORMOUS 2 foot long (you can order 1/2) subs – named after Civil War battleships.  Two of us shared the USS Lafayette - Spiced shrimp loaded into a French baguette with marinated artichoke hearts, tomatoes, green olive tapenade, chopped romaine, pickled red onion, & sherry vinaigrette:

I adore this sandwich, but I think that next time, I’ll have it as a salad with the baguette on the side.  It is just overwhelming!

Mr. Kim and our friend had these

USS Brooklyn - Spicy jerk chicken loaded into a French baguette, with shredded cabbage, roasted banana ketchup & peach chutney:

USS Congress - Chipotle roasted pork shoulder loaded into a French baguette with tomatillo barbecue sauce, grilled pineapple, & Mexi slaw:

20170706_151413-001.jpg.8a95e8d3911e4f9f478d8fba444eeddc.jpg

We all shared an order of the amazing Brussels sprouts - Shredded & quick sauteed with fennel, orange, tamarind & honey glaze:

Lunch at home one day was Mr. Kim’s brisket.  It turned out a little dry, so we had it as burnt ends:

I made some sides and ‘go withs’.  Slaw:

Fried pickles:

These are fantastic with BBQ.

@caroled's Baked Beans:

Sandwich with fixings:

One day, we went BACK to Charlottesville to take our friends to Al Carbon – the place that had been closed.  We ordered LOTS of things.

Incomparable chicken:

Chicken cemita w/ avocado, fresh Oaxaca cheese, and a slice of ham:

Steak cemita w/ the same toppings + red onion:

Same sandwich with the addition of their spicy sauce:

Tacos – not sure of the fillings:

Plantains:

Street corn – with mayo, cotija cheese, chili powder and lime zest:

Sweet corn seasoned with fresh epazote and jalapenos topped with mayo or sour cream, cotija cheese, lime, and chile powder:

Nopalitos – roasted cactus:

Sweet potato - baked over charcoal and topped with sweet cream:

Green poblano rice & pinto beans with chorizo, bacon, cilantro and roma tomatoes:

Just amazing food, as always.  The fact that we were not just willing, but anxious, to drive over an hour for lunch says it all.

Breakfast for lunch on the road home in Eureka Springs, Arkansas (no photos; didn't even think to do so) at a roadside cafe dubbed "The Filling Station," mostly on the strength of its tagline, "Many have eaten. Few have died." A fair recommendation. Acceptable French toast (would have been better without the cinnamon) with bacon. Good coffee. Real half-and-half. My travel companion, an eighth-grader, had her first-ever eggs Benedict, and pronounced it "the best breakfast I've ever had."

Been on a short vacay. Good time, unremarkable food, as I was accompanied by a friend who is somewhat unadventurous in that realm, and two teens. But we had a good time. Thai takeout, and really good bar burgers (yes, we take minors to bars, at least to eat, down here), and fine fried chicken, and mostly, a good, relaxing week.

Had a grouper sandwich at a little fish market with a cooking trailer parked out front

The grouper was good so had to go back later and pick up more plus snapper for the next two nights dinner

Envious. Grouper is perhaps my favorite fish. And it doesn't travel well.

Left over polenta refreshed with fresh corn, tomato, cooked in CSO 325 degrees for 30 minutes.  Sous vide egg which was a bit softer than I planned.  Italian sausage and pork.

My daughter grew potatoes this year and I was the lucky recipient of three of them (there are not many this time).

I wanted to enjoy them as simply as possible out of respect for the garden and the gardener. I scrubbed them, tossed them in duck fat, salt and pepper and roasted them in the  Cuisinart Steam Oven (400 degrees Fahrenheit times 30 minutes)  gave them a little time under the broiler and then scarfed them down for my lunch.

nothing like freshly dug from the garden New Potatoes

w dirt still on them !

so sweet before the sugars turn to starch.

Nicely Done.

Im going to have to find a source of quality duck fat to keep in my freezer.

there was a high end butcher very near me , their second store.

I used to go to their first store a long long time ago for Prime Rib  ( 4 - 5 bone ) for NewYears and Christmas.

back then Prime was really Prime.

they had Duck Fat in their refrigerator and it worked well when carefully sealed and frozen.\

they of course are no longer in business as Animal Fat  was frowned upon

for a while

Eat Less , but Better  Id say.

Because sometimes you just need a burger and fries from your favorite burger joint at three in the afternoon when you've skipped lunch, and after talking about it on the Fast Food Burger thread, I was jonesing for a Presley's Drive-In Burger and fries. Poor photo, but...

598ba719a0a89_burgerandfries0809.jpg.78e1ca560c9d40266e2ff1f4ce691b35.jpg

I confess a love for frozen crinkle-cut fries, when they're fried right. Presley's fries them right. Crispy outside, creamy in. Simple fixins on burger -- mustard, mayo, pickles.

ETA: I love the diner melamine plates, too. You do get a throwaway styrofoam cup, so they can give you a to-go refill.

Hit the spot.
