That‘s this years ema (絵馬 or „picture-horse“ - a wooden sign) from my friends home shrine, depicting the rabbit for the year of the rabbit. Japanese use two alphabets (hiragana and katakana) and the Chinese-derived script (kanji) in a mixed way …

My daughter's fiancee is a whisky lover (a very restrained whisky lover) so for Christmas, I went to our local government liquor store and asked for a "decent bottle of whiskey, under $100.00. The fellow there recommended Auchentoshan 12. The recipient was delighted with it and I was delighted when I saw a bottle in @Duvel's collection.

A haul from Nick's Wine mail order except the Chartreuse, which was a dusty bottle at IGA that I thought I'd better pick up, given the current scarcity. The Luxardo Gin was clearance so almost inexpensive. The Teelings Irish Whiskey is aged in whiskey barrels that they sent to a brewery to age stout and then the brewery sends back to age whiskey. Very meta. It does have a slight chocolatey flavour but not overpowering. Their single grain and single malt whiskies were out of stock.

   Ugh - sorry, but this is (just part of) what is so wrong with 'media' - the glorification of alcohol consumption.

Don't get me wrong, I will enjoy a drink every now and then (a couple times a month, in social settings; typically) - but these folks are gulping down apple juice, nothing more. 

 

With that said, do not let this little mini fool you nor preclude your purchase of 1910, a vastly superior and one of the ultimate bourbons (esp if you like something on the slightly sweeter side) on the market.  If you do not like it, I will pay for the entire bottle+logistics and just fedex me the rest 😛

and drinking along , w a series that has a certain nuance 

 

Ill drink along , and I do know its dark tea or something 

 

as it adds to the experience 

 

and its a lot easier than getting the correct hat or two

 

for each production .   

 

there is one thing I find  especially degenerate :

 

adding smoking to the series ( yes , people smoke , there , then , now )

 

for 20 pieces of Silver .

I noted the bourbon isle @ Total Wine m was chite long.

 

no measurements were taken .

 

I have been to Scotland , in August .

 

I understand for Whisky as an evening blood thinner

 

one might find an exceptional bourbon for the same

 

Im seeing bourbon , as a perfected step or two higher 

 

than Vodka , for getting

50 % very cold water  ( it warm here , didn't want to disturb the Balance  by cooling down the bourbon itself )

 

I can see how style of preparations

 

might have a lot of potential nuances 

 

The Bottle , The Label , the nuance of provenance 

 

maybe from that large Chicago Rx factory 

 

you send in your bottle , w your Rx 

 

and well ends up pretty tasty for some

 

but fe me , this is sweet .

 

this version , not so much that Pink double-bubble chewing gum

 

but sweet.

 

pleased w my $ 1.99 investment .   I can sleep that off

Endeavour is only on Saturday evening - and unfortunately I work in emerg every other Saturday for 12 hours - so if I'm lucky I might catch a few minutes in the call room - but I'm missing every other episode.

The other day I bought myself a family-size bottle of Carpano Antica, an Italian vermouth. It's my current favorite over ice. Excellent with those parchment paper thin Italian "sheet music" crackers, which are really hard to find and are so delicate they usually suffer in shipping. Trader Joe's used to carry them, but that horse has sailed.

Antica is delicious, and certainly saw a surge in popularity with the "craft cocktail" movement.  Formaggio Essex is currently carrying Pane Carasau from Sardinia - and it gets here in good shape!

I too saw that article. I must say, calling it the Vermouth hour isn't quite as romantic as calling it the Violet hour. In my dotage I can no longer drink a martini without sliding down under the table. Porto, Amaro, vermouth, many are delicious and allow me to carry on a conversation and sit upright during my dinner. To your health!

It is still unopened as of this morning; those Basques sure talk funny! (The distilleria is located just south of Bilbao).

I asked about a lagavulin I had not tried.

 

I decided to get it , as a sort of  ****   Treat   *****

 

 

 

I do know that BigBooze has purchased many traditional long standing Spirits

 

and added a grfead deal of marketing.  several recent and past articles in the WSJ and NYT

 

highlight this w regard to Tequila .  remember Im not a Whiskey aficionado   but I do know when I like something

 

I found the new  lagavulin very pleasant.  it had a great deal of caramel flavor , far more than the 16 YO

 

it did have peat flavors that were not medicinal or overpowering,   

 

I dont remember enough about the 16 yp to say if the level of peat flavor was the same or different.

 

Id say if the 16 yo is your very favorite whiskey , and you really like caramel flavors  then

 

you will like this one  

 

I can't say much about its ' age ' , subscribing to Older  is Smoother line.

 

certainly the caramel adds smoothness.   

 

ill go back to the 16 yo when I finish this bottle as Ive been enjoying those flavors for some time.

I discovered I had a little Lagavulin 16 left .

 

so I was able to do a side by  side taste comparison.

 

 

as you can see , my Photography skills are about a D , is not a D-  with regard to background selection

 

if the base was white , you would be able to see the whisky on the R had deeper color.

 

I gave each a sniff or three , and a small taste test 

 

As I drink whiskey probably in an equal ratio of booze to very cold water 

 

that was the key test for me

 

both had aromas of peat , vanilla and caramel   the R just had more of that

 

both were very smooth , maybe the L a bit more

 

Im very happy w the 16 , but Im pleased i sprang for the L one.   

 

as I mentioned before is the 16 is ( one ) of your favorite whisky , you might give the L a try.

 

checking your wallet first.
