"Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Onions"

Quote

Fresh whole red, white, and yellow onions imported from Chihuahua, Mexico and distributed by ProSource Inc.

These onions were sold to restaurants and grocery stores throughout the United States.
ProSource Inc. indicated onions were last imported on August 27, but these imported onions can last up to three months in storage and may still be in homes and businesses.

I had heard about the multi-state outbreak and the trouble they were having to pinpoint the source.

Glad they've seemed to have found it.

Sad, too, because I am tossing the most recent onions I purchased just to be safe. :(

The onion recall has reached Canada as well, though since they were primarily sold into the commercial market rather than the consumer market it's hard to say where they'll turn up.

(my own current bag of onions was Canadian-grown...)

Sliced white mushrooms from the Carleton Mushroom Company are being recalled for listeria. The current recall is for Ontario and Quebec - they were sold through the Metro chain - but there's also a "possibly national" appended to this, which suggests to me that they may have been sold to other grocers as well.

The onion recall has been expanded...now including meal kits:

"Onion recall expands to meal kits, another distributor over salmonella concerns: product codes to check"

Quote

The FDA is now urging people to throw out onions from several different sources, including some included in popular meal kits.

This article has new listings of product codes (you may have to magnify the article to see the codes).

An update on the onion recall in Canada:

https://inspection.canada.ca/food-recall-warnings-and-allergy-alerts/2021-10-29/eng/1635556754131/1635556754775?utm_source=r_listserv

And an update on that enoki mushroom recall from a little while ago:

...and, while it's not a recall as such, this one leapt out at me from a site I visit often: toxic luster dusts used on commercially-prepared cakes, to the detriment of the kids who ate them

This is not a recall notice as such, but explores the limitations of the recall system. I'm putting it here because of the direct connection to actual recalls, but mods may feel it merits its own topic and discussion thread.

Another onion recall; these ones apparently originate in New Mexico as opposed to Mexico proper.

Sliced mushrooms sold at Metro and Superstore, so far thought to be just Ontario and Quebec but possibly more widely distributed.

Also a couple of regional recalls: Broadwood Farm microgreens sold in Ontario, and Al Burj brand tahini and halwa in Alberta.

"Euro Foods Dba Citterio USA Corp. Recalls Salame Stick Products Due To Possible Salmonella Contamination"

Quote

Euro Foods, a Freeland, Penn. establishment, is recalling approximately 119,091 pounds of salame stick products that may be contaminated with Salmonella the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today. FSIS issued a public health alert for the salame stick products on October 29, 2021, believing that the product was no longer in commerce. However, following this alert, FSIS observed product available at one retail location and two Citterio salame stick samples previously collected by the California Department of Public Health have tested positive for Salmonella.

Thought this was pertinent 'cause tis the season for a variety of meat sticks (for Xmas stocking stuffers).

I've gotten so concerned that I won't do many salad greens that I haven't grown myself (unless they are cooked).

I'm entering the season of braised romaine, brussels sprouts and stewed greens.  I've convinced myself that it is "eating seasonally" and is a virtue.  😉

Okay, so... Kraft Heinz is recalling Country Time lemonade crystals and Tang orange drink (tbh, I didn't realize they still made that...) nationally for possible presence of glass:
https://recalls-rappels.canada.ca/en/alert-recall/country-time-brand-original-lemonade-fruit-juice-substitute-drink-mix-and-tang-brand?utm_source=r_listserv

There are also two recalls of sesame seed for possible salmonella:

https://recalls-rappels.canada.ca/en/alert-recall/elan-brand-organic-sesame-whole-seeds-recalled-due-salmonella?utm_source=r_listserv

https://recalls-rappels.canada.ca/en/alert-recall/going-nuts-brand-organic-white-sesame-seeds-recalled-due-salmonella?utm_source=r_listserv

...and an update to an earlier recall of tahini and halwa, which - given the timing - may have been related to the sesame recalls above. I dunno.

https://recalls-rappels.canada.ca/en/alert-recall/alburj-brand-and-algota-brand-tahinatahini-and-halawahalvah-recalled-due-salmonella?utm_source=r_listserv

It was a busy night at the ol' CFIA mailing list foundry...
