Tomato in fruit salad?

A recent post on futilitycloset.com offered this quote:

Clever, but is it true? Tomato plus watermelon is a now-classic combination, but how about fruit other than watermelon? What combination(s) have you liked (or not liked)?

I'm partial to two pairings: tomato and pineapple (like on a pizza or an asian soup) and tomato and fresh yellow peach, as in a very simple preparation of alternate slices, with maybe a sprinkling of balsamic or fig vinegar. Both tomato and peach need to be perfectly ripe for it to work well; it occurs to me that a hunk of burrata cheese might be nice with that, but I'm just daydreaming here. I know the tomato-watermelon combo is fairly common, but it isn't my favorite. To my tastebuds yellow watermelon has a more vegetal quality than red, and seeing as I salt both tomato and watermelon, I should try that and see if I like it better. And as for putting chunks of tomato into a mixed fruit salad, I would think...not.

I dont know about tomato but i know carrots are a vegetable and also know shredded carrots go well in fruit salad. I love carrot salad which usually has sugar, raisins, and pineapple, you can also add mayo or cool whip.

Some tomatoes, including but not limited to Mexico Midget and Sungold (doesn't taste like an average tomato,) are great in fruit salad.

If you look at American magazines from the late 1910s and the 1920s, you'll see tons of ads for canned pineapple (it was a relatively new thing, then and very popular) -- and a lot of times the recipe featured is tomato/pineapple salad.    Sad to say I never tried it.

Two things I frequently make are tomato and avocado salad, but that's really more of a savory salad than a "fruit" salad; it has bacon and a mayo-lime dressing with smoked paprika, and a tomato and cantaloupe salad, where I cube the canteloupe, half the cherry tomatoes, half balls of fresh mozz, and toss it all with a honey lime viniagrette. Excellent over roasted asparagus.

Don't ask. Eat it.

Ill bet that tomatoes in a Malaysian Fruit Salad Rojak Buah Petis would be acceptable

 

This is the salad. I can see how tomatoes would fit here.
