Good seafood/lobster near Manchester

Recommended Posts

It's my mum's 70th in January and I'd appreciate some recommendations for a good seafood restaurant near Manchester. I'm happy to travel within say a 150 mile round-trip radius for the right place. Lobster as part of a tasting menu or a la carte would be perfect. We can stay overnight and don't need to dine on a Friday or Saturday night. Thanks in advance.

Nothing doing, I'm afraid. There are no seafood restaurants in Manchester or its hinterland. Liverpool has Italian Club Fish which I haven't visited (but Giles Coren has). Chester has Moules a Go Go, which is OK if you like mussels. No lobster anywhere, although it appears occasionally on seasonal menus.

It would be interesting to speculate why this should be, but that doesn't help you very much.

Where exactly are you? Several Manchesters come to mind.

I'm assuming as this post is to the UK/Ireland board, then it'll be the only one we have - the city in north west England.

As Chaihana Joe, I can't think of anywhere in the metro area which I'd regard as a seafood specialist, let alone a good one.

This place, in Cheadle Hulme, has lobster salad on its regular menu but it's basically a pub  - http://www.pointingdog.co.uk/#cheadle

And, oddly, this Indian restaurant on the fringe of the city centre always has lobster thermador on the menu Which always seems to undermine its claim to be serving "authentic" south asian dishes - http://www.zoukteabar.co.uk/~zoukteab/speciality-seafood.php

Italian Club Fish in Liverpool does have lobster on its menu - I really like the place, but it's not smart or fine dining in any sense - more of a buzzy Milan cafe atmosphere.  The food is generally very good, but I've not tried their lobster.

The best place for lobster is the West coast of Scotland, but that is a bit outside your 150 mile range.  You could look at places on the NE coast of England though - perhaps the Magpie Cafe in Whitby?  But this is even less 'fine dining' - very much a cafe and you need to queue to get in - but if you don't need to eat on a Friday or Saturday, then you should be fine to get a table quickly.

Hey MacD - Thanks for the info on Italian Club Fish. We  had an excellent celebratory lunch there yesterday and it was just as you described.

I make a point of saying thank you because this forum used to be a great source of information. But now - I'd still be sitting on Bangor station ten months on waiting for a tip for a birthday celebration in Cardiff - http://forums.egullet.org/topic/121351-pubs-the-topic/page-5#entry1949974

You're welcome - glad you enjoyed it.

And yes, Egullet seems to have a died a very sudden death over the last few years - it's a shame as it's one of the few places that isn't all about London.   I wonder where the original poster settled on - I think one of the reasons forums like this fade away is the lack of feedback after someone has asked for (and received) recommendations.
