Southern Food in Vancouver, BC

4 posts in this topic

I was hoping someone could direct me to a restaurant in or around Vancouver, BC where I could try some authentic southern cuisine. I have seen a lot of southern dishes on food shows lately and would love to dive in and experience it myself. I want to be sure that I'm getting as authentic a taste as I can, outside of the southern states themselves.

Thanks in advance!

Hi there!  Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but you might be outta luck for good "authentic southern" food in Vancouver.  There are places that have a focus on southern-style American food & BBQ, but I honestly can't say whether they're authentic or not - my experience with southern cuisine is pretty limited.  A few that come to mind:

Memphis Blues BBQ - I've only been to this one, but nearly 10 yrs ago...

Chewies Steam & Oyster Bar

Ouisi Bistro (Cajun - this place has been around for years)

Peckinpah (Carolina BBQ)

Cray Kitchen & Bar (Cajun)

I dunno...if you're hoping to experience the southern cuisine you see on the food shows, you could be disappointed. Hopefully someone else here has better suggestions?

On the other hand, Vancouver's got lots of other really terrific restaurants, and we're known particularly for spectacular Asian food.

When in Rome........

Maybe southern Chinese? Best Asian food in North America is in Vancouver. Try Phnom Penh over by Chinatown. Their pork ribs are better than any I've found in the south. And fried shrimp you cannot stop eating.

Don't bother. None here. There's a great place in Tacoma called the Southern Kitchen. 6th and Sprague. Order the whole catfish.
