"Baking: From My Home to Yours" (Part 2)

I made the pumpkin muffins yesterday. I've made them before and love them as-is. This time I experimented a bit and added craisins and chocolate chips rather than the raisins and nuts. And I topped them with both sunflower and pumpkin seeds. Delicious! I'm embarrassed to say they're almost all gone (I live alone!). I'll be making another batch tomorrow for sure.

I'm gonna go bake something…

wanna come with?

Apart from the one year anniversary, let's celebrate the 1000th reply as well.

Dear Dorie,

By any chance, have you kept track of which recipes were not discussed or made at all from this 1000 posts?

If any, how about we all start working on them one by one...and share the result?!?

I thought I would add this:

When I made the dough for the Brioche, I had a series of distractions.

First, just as I added the eggs, my kids came racing in to tell me my sheep were in the pond. I turnt off the mixer and ran outside to lifeguard my sheep. I was gone at LEAST half an hour. When I came in I switched the mixer back on and continued.

Then, I misread the directions, and after the initial rise, I did not put it in the fridge. I let it rise another hour on the counter, slapping it down as instructed...but duh! After I realized I was wrong, I put in in the fridge.

I thought for sure this was going to be a flat failure, but I struggled onwards anyway...

I am glad I did. The brioche AND the sticky buns were fabulous, despite my boneheadedness.

So the brioche is very forgiving, don't be afraid to try!

Hi all,

Thanks for the good wishes! And thanks for the heads up on the 1000 th post. As I've said before -- I find it all pretty amazing. Even after 1 year, I'm still knocked out by your collective enthusiasm for the book and your deep love of baking.

Pax, I'm so glad your brioche turned out well despite your several distractions. I learned to make brioche early in my baking career and I was so proud of myself for being able to do it and do it well. I made brioche once a week, every week for years and always had that same wonderful sense of satisfaction. While I'd never thought about it in forgiveness terms, I think you're one to something. How nice that something so delicious and so elegant can be so gracious too.

iii-bake -- I haven't kept track of what's been baked from BAKING and what hasn't. My guess is that the majority of recipes that have been baked and posted are the recipes for which there are pictures. And, of course, the pictureless World Peace Cookies. But that's just my guess. It's a fun idea, isn't it? Thank you!!

Dorie, I just have to tell you that after I read your post, I thought I'd make a batch for the college kids' retreat this weekend, and take pictures, since last time I made them they disappeared before I could snap a photo. (Luckily I had packed hubby's dinner before the rest of the horde descended, so he & his co-workers got some!)

This weekend I was almost too slow, again. By the time I had a second to grab the camera, they were GONE, and I thought I'd missed out... but tonight I discovered two hiding at the bottom of the (nearly) empty cookie jar. My daughter & daughter in law just polished them off, but I managed to get you a picture, such as it is. :)

Gald this thread is still alive and kicking after more than a year! It's fall, a great baking season. So, I made the Depth of Fall Butternut Squash pie. It just sounded so fallish and warm full of sweet squash, pears, raisisns, walnuts and some spice. I also added an apple that was lying in my fridge. Awsome stuff, not too sweet, very earhty, fallish and deliciouse with a scoop of Ben and Jerry's cinnamon bun ice cream! This makes a unique and tasty T-giving dessert.

A couple of weeks ago I handed my 5 yo a heap of cookbooks and we went through them so she could pick out a birthday cake.

She went through a couple of nice cook books without so much as a glance.

She was excited by a bunch of the pictures, though, and she spelled through quite a lot of ingredients trying to make the right choices. C-O-C-O-N-U-T spells "ICK, Mom!"

This is what she finally brought me. Look familiar?

It is the chocolate banded ice cream torte on page 289.

So not only have you inspired all of us with this book, you are also inspiring budding artistes!

I made the Rugelach from Dorie's book yesterday. Very delicious!!! I used for them my homemade pear jam.

They look great and your pear jam filling sounds marvelous!

Welcome to eGullet, by the way!

I made the coconut tea bread from this last night. Hmmm. Not really happy with the texture - very rubbery inside, but with a very crisp crust. Any thoughts what might be the issue there? Was a very liquid batter even before adding the dark rum.

The whole flat smelt divine though. And it was super toasted for breakfast this morning.

Beautiful, cakewalk! I have some madeleine batter in the fridge right now!

I also made the mocha swirl bundt cake last night. It's the 2nd or 3rd time I've made it, and I don't know why but I never get that beautiful leaf pattern – I just get a layer of chocolate cake and a layer of white cake. Sigh. Next time I'll remember to just marble it.

I'm gonna go bake something…

I tried the pear torte recipe for the first time last weekend. Not sure it turned out right – I used a metric springform pan about 7 ½ inches instead of the 8 inch and there was way too much pear filling for the pan – I ended up using around 3 instead of 4 pears and there was still too much. The filling ended up being almost solid pear (plus the chopped apricots and nuts. It still ended up delicious and I’d make it again with some tinkering with the proportions.

iii,  I agree that it would be interesting to see if there is anything that HASN't been tried yet.  There's got to be something!  It might be fun to give that a try.

I was curious, too. So I went back and started listing what has been made. Here's what we've made to, in order of appearance. I don't think I have duplicates, but a few may have slipped in.
