Dine Out Vancouver - The Topic (2008-)

Much better to visit one of the Farmers' Markets (Trout Lake being a particular favourite) where you can connect with actual producers. Too much of GIM is just retail.

A good point Mark - they really should include a Farmers' Market tour as part of DIV. Hopefully there will be, it just hasn't been posted yet.

The earliest farmers' markets will barely be open then and DIV is much later than normal this year due to the Olympics.

I take your point Mark, but Trout Lake is a long way from where I live while GI is just a short hop away. I frequent the West End Farmers' Market in season but there is still all the rest of the year. For me GI has charms beyond the market itself, not the least of which is proximity and coffee from JJ Bean - no good coffee at the West End market. In fact awful coffee. I know lots of people on GI and always enjoy my morning visits.

GI used to have a pretty good farmers' market on Thursdays, in season, but that has really dwindled. I'm still hoping for a resurrection.

Cheers,

Anne

JJ Bean, AND an on-Island roaster, too, near Performance Works.

btw, there is a JJ on Davie, east end; and a new mini-kiosk at the CBC on Hamilton.

I wonder if some of the farmers who used to head to GI on Thursdays were at Thornton Park on Wednesdays last season. For the folks who come from farther away (i.e., Cawston), having the extra day between mid-week and weekend markets may be a much-needed field day (or rarely, rest day).

Thanks for the JJ tips Karen, but there's nothing west of Burrard. I live in a coffee wasteland.

As for the farmers' market folk migrating to Wednesdays at Thornton Park, you could well be right. I am well aware of the pitfalls to farmers in participating in these markets, but selfishly I want to be able to access the good stuff in close proximatey to where I live.

Going off topic is usually the only way I can get anyone to say anything around here.

 Agreed barolo - the Vancouver forum seems to have lots of viewers but few commenters. Maybe we need more controversy? I'll have to think up a new controversial topic...

I agree with all you say. I enjoy my cycles to GI; but the market is 90% retail. Whilst Trout Lake is a summer market, Wise Hall is the East Van winter market. Some truly great organic producers of fruit, veg, bread and cheese. All local(ish) and no retail.

For the avodance of doubt, and to bet back on-topic, I am all in favour of DOV. Anything that gets people out of chain restaurants and into proprietary ones is good in my books.

Get out your knives, forks, chopsticks, and spoons - the Dine Out Vancouver 2010 list has been announced. DOV runs from Monday, April 26 to Thursday, May 6.

I've copied the list of 207 restaurants below. Although most places take reservations, I've noted the few that don't.

A nice feature they've added this year is a map that you can browse for different types of cuisine. You can check out menus and also search by neighbourhood, menu price, and cuisine type here

That is quite a list.

IIRC, the number of restaurants is down from last year.

Because of the timing of DOV, I think some of the people have stayed out.

We started our menu this week. I like to start early just to get things sorted out in the kitchen....placement, amount needed etc. Every year I think I know how much of each item I will need and people surprise me and order the other.

This year the surprise is more Goat cheese and white balsamic vinegar salad over the soup.

Had I thought about the time of year a bit more rather than year's gone by menus, I would have known this.

On the positive side, halibut is in season and we are featuring it on the menu.

Neil do you mean people have stayed out because it's taking place later than last year and so they don't need the boost in business?

That's great that you offer the DOV menu a bit early. In fact, if a restaurant doesn't do that, the first few days might be a bit chaotic unless they're offering regular menu items.
