On West 4th Avenue, in between Burrard and Cypress (by Marks Work Warehouse) a new restaurant is going to be Noodle Box.  Opening in July, as stated on the website.

Their sign also makes a big deal about being the "Victoria" Noodle Box. Does this mean anything to you Victoria folks?

was surprised to see golden great wall szechuan on broadway is no more

Me too, until I realized they've moved just a few blocks west. Can't remember what the cross-street is, but they now have a corner location.

Heather Street. Under the Holiday Inn, beside the Great Canadian Casino at the 700 block of Broadway, north side.

On another note, Szechuan Garden is gone, the entire building looks like it is stripped for redevelopment. Didn't Szechuan Garden move there recently? Other places further west are gone too, buildings being demolished or stripped for new development (Jive billiards, Sleep something store, and looks like Cue is gone too). One of those stripped buildings is quite close to being across from Toys 'R Us; somewhere I read that Tojo's may be moving into that area?

AWESOME!!

There are 2 Noodle Boxes in Victoria. Too early for me to find their web site, but this is a great addition. 4th Ave is the perfect place for them.

Concept: Chinese Take-out fast food. Noodles (think Chow Mein) in the old Chinese take-out boxes. Really good!

The Noodle Box is fantastic. Every time I am in Victoria, I go there for lunch. Try their Indonesian spicy peanut noodles.

They have a website (sorry can't link). They started as a little sidewalk cart and then took over a tiny place on Fisguard. Now they have one on Douglas as well.

Kitsilano should be happy!

Next Noodle Bar has finally opened on Robson st, just underneath H Mart.

My boss and I ventured in yesterday for lunch and had a delicious seafood laksa and "mini me" rolls. The laksa is not totally authentic, but still had a delicious coconuty cury broth, and generous seafood which included prawns, mussels, scallops, fish cakes and cuttlefish. The rolls were little spring rolls with prawn, taro and something else in it which i can't remember, with a sweet chilli sauce dip.

They have an interesting menu. Noodle dishes from different Asian cultures, both in soup and fried, and appetizers and nibblies that include different rolls, little bite size hainan chicken rice. The prices are reasonable as well.

Ooh, we also had a lovely tea, white peony, which was served in a lovely little teapot and brought out in a little tray.

Continuing with the noodle theme on this thread, Noodles Supreme Asian Bistro (apparently that's yaletown-speak for a Cantonese noodle house) has opened for a week now at 126 Davie St. In addition to their pan-asian noodles, they also have other dishes, kung pao this and curry that etc. Had take-outs of Won Ton Noodle and chicken wings there last week. Although the noodle and the soup were packed separately, the noodles were over-cooked and mushy. The 6 small honey-glazed wings came on a bed of crispy noodle. A bit sweet to my taste, but otherwise OK. Yaletown can certainly do with a Chinese restaurant (Yopo is too small), but this one may be a little too much like another Hon's.

Edited to ask a question: I read that there's going to be a Lombardo's at Smithe and Burrard. Does anyone know when and where? Is it going to be between Earl's and the openning-soon Azia?

The Georgia Straight reports that KaRV - taking over the old Adesso space - has opened:

KaRV (2201 West 1st Avenue), a cool surf-style concept bar/restaurant with a relaxed vibe, prime patio seating, and a giant “feast” table in. KaRV’s menu? Fish tacos, coconut prawns, tiki wings, sirloin steak, and microbrews at down-to-earth prices.

Cheers,

Anne

I inadvertently ended up eating at the new Red Burrito at Broadway and Ash today on it's very first today. The components are good, but the new staff have a little way to go on putting them together in the correct order.

Thank God they included a hundred bajillion napkins for messy me though, or the keyboard would have been an utter disaster.

There's a new fusion restaurant opening up (or perhaps it's open... I couldn't tell from across the street) on West Broadway at MacKenzie. It is right beside what I think is the 2nd Cupcakes location (if they are the very bright pink place.)

Name begins with an "S", alas I can't recall the rest of the letters more precisely. It's in the spot that housed Ted's Place many moons ago IIRC. A bit of a dubious spot... will be interesting to see how it pans out. Hopefully well.

On another note, I walked by Karv (resto that has taken over the old Adesso location at 1st and Yew) this afternoon and the menu looks quite imaginative and is reasonably priced.

Poked my head inside to check out the renos and the decor is a tad on the dark side... but I'm guessing that they are going for a "nightclub" feel. A couple of guys were on the patio having burgers so I asked them how the food was and they said "great". We had a brief conversation about the fact that it was a tricky location and they said they thought that this concept would do well. Time will tell I suppose.

Always take a good look at what you're about to eat. It's not so important to know what it is, but it's critical to know what it was. --Unknown

I took a stab at the seafood laksa at next noodle bar and was a bit disappointed.

The broth was flavorful but not rich or terribly complex. The kiwi mussels were a downer compared to the fresh local crop. The noodles were a bit overcooked as well.

I think I just need to hit tropika for their version which I recalled as being much richer and for lack of a better term, bold.

also hit Noodles Supreme Asian Bistro at the roundhouse in yaletown. Ordered the Indonesian peanut saute and found it surprisingly tame, so much so that I asked for hot sauce for it. It was fine, but uninspiring and really didn't do anything to evoke thoughts of indonesia.

The decor could have been much stronger as well. The place just seems spartan which is fine for most chinese restaurants I visit, but hey, we're in yaletown and you're a "bistro". A little more colour and personality wouldn't hurt.

Satima. Taiwanese "fusion" as far as I can tell. Strange menu. They serve lunch, dinner AND afternoon tea.

Taco Loco Story

Growing up in Southern California had its benefits for Daved Benefield, Beautiful, weather, no winters and great food. The weather gave Daved an opportunity to play outside everyday, his favourite sport, Football, where mild mannered Daved became Mr Furious. Everyday after playing football Mr Furious would go to his favourite Taco truck and get some true tacos, so good that at one point he didn’t know whether he was playing football for the game or the tacos.

When Daved Came to Canada to play football in the CFL it was his one great disappointment, he couldn’t find a true, real, fresh taco anywhere. So every trip home was spent at his friend’s taco truck eating and learning. Daved would always say “one day I’m going to open a taco place, a taco place worthy of Mr Furious”

THAT DAY IS NOW!

After a 14 year CFL career, Daved decided he needed to make some crazy good tacos, true to the recipes of his friend back home. So he retired and sought out his friend and former teammate Noah Cantor (Owner of Vera’s Burger Shack). After a brief discussion (and a kitchen Demo of the recipes), Noah and his Partner in Vera’s (Gerald Tritt) said sure.

So, a couple of hundred test tacos later (“okay Daved, Just make one more to try”) Mr Furious and Team Vera’s have joined together to bring you the best tacos we can possibly make.

Hope you enjoy

Taco Loco

So Fresh it’ll make you crazy

Opening around July 11, 1935 Cornwall Ave (the original vera's in kits)
