Cookbooks – How Many Do You Own? (Part 3)

150 in my library, many more packed up in the basement. I keep getting them in, amazon.com and jessica's biscuit love me. When a new one makes the cut and I find things I want to do it takes a spot on the bookshelfs and I pack a few away that I'm not using at the moment. After awhile I give the older unused books I am not using away. They just keep rolling in and rolling out of my house.

I've added 8 more in the past week. First, I picked up a $3.00 edition (used/like new) of Nigel Slater's Toast. Of course, now that it's been nominated for a Beard Award, the price on used copies plummeted this week by about $10. Go figure.

And while they are not yet in hand, I also ordered 7 used volumes of the Time-Life Good Cook Series, to finally complete my set! :smile:

Hum...this is partly Marlene's fault... Thank you, Marlene!

On her last count, she mentionned The Frog Commissary Cookbook, which I love and do (or rather, did) not own.... so off to Amazon I went!

Add three for me, Maggie... The Frog..., The White Dog Café Cookbook, and another I always wanted, Mustards Grill Napa Valley Cookbook....

Going to bed with cookbooks tonight. :rolleyes:

I don't know how I didn't mention that among the 25 used books I got at the FOL sale one was the last one needed to complete the Good Cook series which I have been building over several years. It is Dried Beans and Grains. I could have bought the whole set, but this was much more fun. I also got Classic Home Cooking co-authored by Marlena Spieler.

One more for me. I went back to the clearance outlet and got a copy of Apicius, the Vehling translation.

I don't know how many this qualifies as: 3 more volumes from the Time-Life Foods of the World series plus the accompanying booklets plus a booklet for a volume I was already in possession of.

The new volumes are Provencial France, Latin America, and Africa. The booklet is is for Pacific and SE Asia.

I bought another cookbook today. It is the just for fun cookbook, "Nanny Ogg's Cookbook" 'A useful and improving Almanack of Information including Astonishing Recipes from Terry Pratchett's Discworld.'

I am a big fan of Terry Pratchett's stories and this little book is worth buying just for the chuckles produced when reading the titles of some of the recipes.

I'd been looking for the out-of-print "Florence Lin's Complete Book of Chinese Noodles, Dumplings and Breads". I searched the usual places (eBay, Amazon Used, etc) and found lots of used copies for quite a high price. Then recently, on a lark, I decided to Google it again and found it at Powell's for a mere pittance...and it's in almost perfect condition. Either they didn't care what the going market price was or they just didn't know what they had.

So my tip for the day: Google, Google, Google...you never know when you'll find a treasure at a great price!

I agree that one needs to keep searching, sometimes using obscure or unusual words to narrow the search and thus find lesser known sites.

I have found some interesting books using bibliofind, which is a part of Amazon but often I find books via that site that do not come up on an Amazon search.

.com is another of my favorites.

Then there is Acanthus books

which has reprints of rare and very old books, facsimiles, etc.

They also sometimes have copies of out of print books but you have to contact them and ask.

They are exceptionally nice people and very helpful.

I brought 3 home from Portland, one of which I gave to an eGulleteer, so it should still count. The keepers are Art Culinaire #28 and Patisserie of the Eastern Mediterranean. Does anyone know the total number in this pastry series?
