Cookbooks – How Many Do You Own? (Part 2)

I am waiting to have surgery next week...laparascopy for endometriosis and possible oofarectomy. So...what am I doing since I can't be up and around?? Looking through all my cookbooks!!! I know them pretty well, and I always dissect the new ones before I put them on my bookshelf. I always have at least 3 or 4 by the sofa in the living room. People who think that you buy a cookbook to just use the recipe as a list of ingredients have no imagination. I'm really enjoying my latest find...Barefoot Contessa's Family Style. Its already been counted thought...I ordered it and knew it was on the way.

it just makes me want to sit down and eat a bag of sugar chased down by a bag of flour.

Totally OT: dumplin, I hope all goes well and you're back in your kitchen soon  When I had laparoscopic surgery, I had more discomfort from the gas part of it than the surgery. Hope you have minimal discomfort from all of it.

Back on: I was going to wait until everything was here, but I don't know when the rest of the Amazon order will make it, so:

Alan Davidson, Mediterranean Seafood from Amazon's sale books, and from the IACP silent auction, 3 by Mary Sue Milliken and Susan Feniger: Mesa Mexicano, City Cuisine, and too hot tamales. So those bring me up to 660.

You will enjoy their cookbooks. They really spend a lot of time preparing every recipe several times before they include it in the book. Every recipe is a tried and true one.

I have been to two of the Border Grill restaurants, Santa Monica and Pasadena several times. I made it to Ciudad once and would like to go again but it is not always easy to get friends lined up for a trip to downtown L.A.

The world belongs, however, to those who can look at the glass and say: What's up with this glass? Excuse me? Excuse me? This is my glass? I don't think so. My glass was full! And it was a bigger glass!" Terry Pratchett

I love downtown LA, and it annoys me that people think it's nowheresville. My daughter took me there on my last visit, and I ate wonderful things and went to a bellydancing equipment store. Spent too much money.

Add one for me. I finally got the Nero Wolfe cookbook. What a trip!

That brings me to a not-so-grand total of 9.

Okay, the rest of the Amazon shipment came:

Alan Davidson's North Atlantic Seafood

Eve Zibart: The Ethnic Food Lover's Companion

Third edition of The New Food Lover's Companion; (number 2 just has too many omissions now)

Ian Hemphill: The Spice and Herb Bible

and a bunch of eG-relatives:

The Slow Mediterranean Kitchen

Monica Bhide's 2 books, The Spice is Right and The Everything Indian Cookbook

and, because I finally realized I'd never get it for free, The Whole Beast: Nose to Tail Eating.

So that's 8 more.

hmmm ... only a month since I last posted - and two more cookbooks now live in my house - but they are goodies!

One is the Elizabeth David Classics hardback which has three books in one, and the other is a collection of articles called the Wilder Shore of Gastronomy - think the journal was called PPC - petit propos culinaires? I'd not heard of it before but looks like I'll enjoy it.

Having said all that ... there are a few books waiting in my amazon basket for future purchase, so suspect I will be back here before too long!

I'll bring you back some finger cymbals next time I'm out there! (Is there a Duck Mondor in your future?)

Well I used to have over 200 but I had to scale down a bit. Now, I have 44 + my cheese books (17 of those) and my food related books (9) of those. So all in all 70.

Add 53 additional cookbooks for me.

4 boxes of books purchased on ebay arrived in today's mail.

Publication dates from 1921 to 1986.

Five more for me. Three local cookbooks (We're Cooking in the City, Tadich Grill, and a cheese book by Janet Fletcher) plus two oldies-the last Time Life Foods of the World Cookbook I needed to complete my collection, and Jilia Child's Menu Cookbook.

The good news is that I still have lots of room on my new bookshelves. :raz:

Three more for me. Just ordered Lisa's "Lobscouse" book and Cindy Mushet's dessert book, plus found a new book about cookies languishing in it's pristine mailing wrapper under a bunch of "stuff" piled up on the day my carpets were cleaned.

After a brief time of restraint, 11 new ones for me, including Fresh Food Fast by Peter Berley whose previous book won both IACP and Beard awards, John Ash's Cooking One on One, 4 dessert and baking books and the reprint of Carol Field's great Italy in Small Bites. I also got Mom's Recipes Files because Bourdain and his mother are in it.

What do you think of Ash? I have his other one which I like a great deal. Is the new one as good?

I went into mourning when he was no longer on the Food TV network.

His American Game Cooking is wonderful for someone like me who cooks a lot of wild game.

From The Earth To The Table not only has a huge number of wonderful recipes, it has tons of good general advice that anyone can use.

This new book has so much information for the novice cook that takes so much of the mystery out of preparing some recipes at which most newbies would balk if they looked at a similar recipe in another type of cookbook.

I would certainly recommend it to anyone who is just starting to venture into cooking.

There is plenty for old hands to learn also.

Thanks for your opinion. I'll add it to the list.

I also loved his show when it was on Food TV. That's what prompted me to pick up From the Earth to the Table.
