Rice Cookers

Interestingly (or not) when I only want to cook one GO cup (or even half of one GO cup), I do that in a little one-quart nonstick Calphalon pan on the stovetop.  That sucker even goes into the dishwasher.

Come to think of it, I don't think I ever make just one GO cup of rice any more. We just like the rices too much, and they reheat so wonderfully in the steam oven.

Which model or brand do you have?

I think all the modern Fuzzy's from Japan , manufactured there

or their models , manufactured elsewhere

do porridge .

on both my 10-cup ( ancient , still working fine , National/Panasonic )

and my newer Zo 3 cup induction

have it .   I look at that setting as cooking something

that ends up cooked w consistency

of a very thick soup or hot cooked grains .

your liquid portion determines the final consistency

the machine , including using milk  !

does its Fuzzy - Fuzzy so at the end

nothing gets scorched

unlike all the rice setting ,

you don't expect all the liquid to be absorbed

fo me , that setting sold me for my first one .

steel cup oats , cooked w milk ,

one button away !

as an aside  , I always cooked more than i needed

( 10 cup )  and refrigerated it.

it did need more milk when Micro'd

might fine breakfast in the winter .

Yours cooks porridge, is that congee or, say, oatmeal?

I know little of porridge or congee, but from my instruction book the porridge setting is for Japanese style porridge using short grain Japanese rice, while the congee setting is for Chinese style porridge using Jasmin rice.  The oatmeal setting is for steel cut oats.

First off, I'd like th thank everyone for your input on the rice cooker.  In thinking it over, I decided the 5.5 size would be the best size for us.  I ordered the Neuro Fuzzy 5.5 made in Japan, and it is supposed to arrive in 4 days. I ordered from a Canadian kitchen supply store.

We normally go to a store called Kitchenalia for kirchen stuff and the proprietor puts in special orders for us for items he does not carry, such as the Zo bread machine that I got.  It seems that the folks at Zojirushi will no longer fill orders from kitchen stores unless 12 or more of the same item are ordered.  There is no way he would order 12 of these.  We have been dealing with the same person for years and felt badly that we could not give him a bit of business.  He did say that he himself as the Neuro Fuzzy and is very happy with it, so that was good to hear.

I am very excited to get this machine.  So is my husband.  He loves rice and hates potatoes and is looking forward to whatever I can conjure up with this machine.

I called Zojirushi a few years back and I was told the ratio was 1 to 1.5 - so 1 go of rice to 1.5 go of water - has worked for me and use the white rice setting in the menu

For tonight's Basmati I'm assaying the 1 to 1.5 rice to water ratio.  For 3/4 go of rice I added 200 ml water.*  Cooking as we speak.  I'm waiting for the cheerful tune.

*OK, I know that should actually have been 202.9395191585274 ml water, but it's late and I hadn't had my mai tai yet.

On amazon US the NW-JEC10BA is down to $706.56, which is a dollar or so less than what I paid for mine.

Oh and my Basmati is now done.  I should go have dinner.

No different than had I'd paid attention to the little marks on the bowl.  But then again, maybe had I added that extra 2.9395191585274 ml water...

For 3/4 go of rice

How do you measure 3/4 of 180 ml of rice?  Do you weigh a full GO, or just eyeball it?

The supplied "go" has markings for 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4, otherwise you have to do the math like Jo did and use a granulated cylinder

Well you were probably doing something right the first time, which doesn't surprise me - the reason I reached out to them originally was because my Jasmine was turning out perfectly, but I was using that setting for the basmati and it was almost crunchy - I was informed to use 1 to 1.5 ratio and the white rice setting - great results since

Ahh, I've never looked that closely at the supplied cup. But I imagine just "eyeballing" something is not in @JoNorvelleWalker's repertoire.

my 10 Cup National / Panasonic has a flat bottom

and a setting for this style of rice .

I didn't see in in my Zo 3 cup induction , w the conical bowl .

I think all bowl from Zo had and now continue to have conical blows.

thus , possibly due the the conical bowls

there is no setting for this .

just a curiosity
