I'm loving how decadent your week is - great to see a hardworking wife and mom

Enjoying herself whilst left unshackled! When my dad used to go away on business I had to literally drag my mum out for a cocktail or cook something she would never normally do as dad/brother/sister wouldn't enjoy it. Great week!

I always thought the pictures on the plates were supposed to represent Native American petroglyphs, but I really haven't a clue.

Re: Yquem: I've only had it once before, about twelve years ago (that time it was a 1990), and it was amazing, but you can get really stunning Sauternes for a fraction of the price. I've had very high-scoring ones from $30 - $50 for a (375 ml) bottle. It's worth a look if you like dessert wine.

You are probably right - I'm an Egyptophile (and I make up my own words!), so I just assumed hieroglyphics.

I will search out a reasonably priced Sauternes - I've had other people suggest that to me.

The designs on the plate are definitely from Egyptian hieroglyphic sources. I used to do a lot of artwork with Egyptian designs, have a collection of books on Egyptology and Gardiner's Egyptian Grammar (1927), which has detailed explanations of the pictographs.

The parallel wavy lines indicate running water, usually the Nile a single wavy line the sea. The hare is the goddess Unnut or Wenet, "swift" (fertility goddess). The hawk is of course Horus,(rebirth) the filled in X (on its side) with a wavy line under it and an orb in the "v" indicate the setting sun between two mountains. The bull is the god Apis, (strength and fertility). That's just off the top of my head. I may be a bit fuzzy on some of this.

The combination of the wavy lines and the hare may indicate swift water but I'd have to look it up in Gardiner to be sure.

It's fun to speculate on the message there might be on the plate.

Dinner was at another one of my neighborhood favorites, City Tavern. It's a small local chain that serves very reliable food. They have one of my favorite sandwiches in town:

Andie, that's so cool that you know what the symbols mean! I wonder if the person who designed the plate knew, or if they just picked some at random. Maybe the message is "Help, I'm being held captive in a Mikasa factory!"

So are you a snacker, or do you prefer 3 solid meals?

Also- I know you have been indulging in the treat type of breakfast "drinks", but are you usually a coffee or tea person (or even a Diet Coke in the morning) person?

They all seem to have something to do with life, enjoyment, fertility and the half-round symbol with Horus is the symbol for bread.

Looks like a loaf of bread as it was made in ancient Egypt - they did have communal bakeries in the pyramid worker's villages.

I don't drink any caffeine - I do like the taste of coffee so I sometimes have decaf. My usual morning (and throughout the day) drink is plain seltzer - something about the bite of the carbonation wakes me up and settles my stomach.

I vary between being a snacker and a 3 meals per day person - if the meals are substantial enough I don't feel like snacking. I do like to munch on something salty with alcoholic drinks in the evening. Either rice crackers or nuts, depending on how crazy I'm going with the calories.

Oh yes, another thing I usually do that I took a welcome respite from this week - count calories. I am a person of somewhat substantial size, and so usually I'm trying to "watch" what I eat, even on vacation. I decided to take a break from all that this week, but after tomorrow, it's going to be back to the grind. I really do enjoy food that isn't quite as hyper-indulgent as I've been eating this week, so it's not terrible deprivation or anything. But just taking the freedom to not think about it... I've enjoyed it so much.

I've never eaten them but have heard they're extremely tasty (maize is involved); they certainly deserve a proper explanation from someone who know them well!

In the US 'cider' is generally a non-alcoholic beverage, essentially cloudy apple juice; 'hard cider' is alcoholic (but not very).

Hushpuppies are fried cornmeal/flour dough leavened with baking soda. Anything fried is good but having said that hps are just ok to me. Kind of bland. But then again I'm a Yankee.

Yes, what gfweb and mjx said re: hush puppies. Deep-fried cornbread nuggets. And "hard" in the context of cider means "alcoholic". "Cider" without that description in the US is unfiltered apple juice.

I like rye toast (dry) with just a hint of orange marmalade along with my eggs :)

You mentioned that you are a seltzer drinker. I like it in the morning especially with a hit of fresh citrus juice. Revs me up. Currently I am purchasing the Safeway brand in 12 oz. cans and it is quite economical though I have been following our Sodastream topic. How do you buy yours?

I have a Sodastream and I love it. I don't think I'm saving any money over buying seltzer at the store, but not having to lug the bottles around is nice. I like to squeeze a bit of lemon or lime in. I do have some of the soda syrups, and also that Mio stuff works well for flavoring.

I have a Sodastream and I love it. I don't think I'm saving any money over buying seltzer at the store, but not having to lug the bottles around is nice. I like to squeeze a bit of lemon or lime in. I do have some of the soda syrups, and also that Mio stuff works well for flavoring.

I love my Sodastream, too. I honestly don't know how I lived without it lol. I also order a case of these

every month. I love the taste of the canned water, too.

      Welcome to “Tales from the Fragrant Harbour”!
      In the next couple of days I am hoping to take you to a little excursion to Hong Kong to explore the local food and food culture as well as maybe a little bit more about my personal culinary background. I hope I can give you a good impression of what life is like on this side of the globe and am looking very forward to answering questions, engaging in spirited discussions and just can share a bit of my everyday life with you. Before starting with the regular revealing shots of my fridge’s content and some more information on myself, I’d like to start this blog and a slightly different place.
      For today's night, I ‘d like to report back from Chiba city, close to Tokyo, Japan. It’s my last day of a three day business trip and it’s a special day here in Japan: “Doyou no ushi no hi”. The “midsummer day of the ox”, which is actually one of the earlier (successful) attempts of a clever marketing stunt.  As sales of the traditional winter dish “Unagi” (grilled eel with sweet soy sauce) plummeted in summer, a clever merchant took advantage of the folk tale that food items starting with the letter “U” (like ume = sour plum and uri = gourd) dispel the summer heat, so he introduced “Unagi” as a new dish best enjoyed on this day. It was successful, and even in the supermarkets the sell Unagi-Don and related foods. Of course, I could not resist to take advantage and requested tonight dinner featuring eel. Thnaks to our kind production plant colleagues, I had what I was craving …
      (of course the rest of the food was not half as bad)

      Todays suggestion: Unagi (grilled eel) and the fitting Sake !
       

      For starters: Seeweed (upper left), raw baby mackerel with ginger (upper right) and sea snails. I did not care for the algae, but the little fishes were very tasty.
       

      Sahimi: Sea bream, Tuna and clam ...
       

      Tempura: Shrimp, Okra, Cod and Mioga (young pickled ginger sprouts).
       

      Shioyaki Ayu: salt-grilled river fish. I like this one a lot. I particularly enjoy the fixed shape mimicking the swimming motion. The best was the tail fin
       

      Wagyu: "nuff said ...
       

      Gourd. With a kind of jellied Oden stock. Nice !
       

      Unagi with Sansho (mountain pepper)
       

      So, so good. Rich and fat and sweet and smoky. I could eat a looooot of that ...
       

      Chawan Mushi:steamed egg custard. A bit overcooked. My Japanese hosts very surprised when I told them that I find it to be cooked at to high temperatures (causing the custard to loose it's silkiness), but they agreed.
       

      Part of the experience was of course the Sake. I enjoyed it a lot but whether this is the one to augment the taste of the Unagi I could not tell ...
       

      More Unagi (hey it's only twice per year) ...
       

      Miso soup with clams ...
       

      Tiramisu.
       

      Outside view of the restaurant. Very casual!
      On the way home I enjoyed a local IPA. Craft beer is a big thing in Japan at the moment (as probably anywhere else in the world), so at 29 oC in front of the train station I had this. Very fruity …

       
      When I came back to the hotel, the turn down service had made my bed and placed a little Origami crane on my pillow. You just have to love this attention to detail.

      OK.... here we go again!!!  While this post is a bit premature (we don't take off until around 1:30AM tonight), I am extremely excited so I figured I'd just set up the topic now.  As in previous foodblogs, I may post a bit from time to time while we're there, depending on how good my internet connection is, and how much free time I have... but the bulk of posting will really get started around July 9th - the day after we get home (hopefully without too much jetlag!!!)

I love to eat but have to hold myself back before I could roll faster than walk. Last month, I started my own food blog (mostly about restaurant, travel and stories).       We're 50 something Aussies who enjoy travelling, eating, cooking, markets, kitchen shops, cooking utensils, animals & plants (often food related), architecture & photography (both kitchens and food) and exploring different cultures (of which food is a big part). The trip was January 14 - February 6, it was just marvellous. My favourite meal is now masala dosa with sambar, I had many. Here's some highlights of the food.
       
      A late afternoon snack of Sichuan pepper squid was washed down with a beer at the Ajantha Seaview Hotel on the promenade in Pondicherry. It's a colonial building with a first floor terrace overlooking the colourful display of women in their finest, and the Bay of Bengal. We're here on a Monday public holiday for the Pongal festival, a four day celebration of the harvest, with many different ceremonies and traditions.
       
       

       
      A visual bonus, cows (and sometimes goats) get their horns painted and wear flower garlands or other decorations.

      I'm Christine and I'm a born and bred New Yorker. I’m an Italian by blood (and at heart, of course) since my parents actually came from Italy. My father was from Sciacca, Sicily while my mother was from Sondrio, Lombardy. Despite coming from different regions, or because of it, love for food and cooking has been one of the mainstays in my family home life growing up. And I’ve always loved the dishes my parents prepared during special occasions, and even on regular days.
       
      And of course, I love cooking (and eating) Italian food and I have a few recipes from my mother, but I'd really love to collect some more, especially the traditional ones. And if anyone can contribute some historical background to each dish, that would be really great.
