eG Foodblog: munchymom (2012) - The Week I Ate Whatever I Wanted

Bird out of the oven:

Meal on the plate:

DSCN0110.jpg

Chicken with 40 cloves of garlic (OK, I didn't actually count the cloves, I used 3 heads); carrots braised with butter and dill; mashed potatoes.

I wish that I could transmit scents over the Internet: the house smells amazing right now.

Beautiful bird and gorgeous plate. I needed a handful of tissues for all the drool!

"There are, it has been said, two types of people in the world. There are those who say: this glass is half full. And then there are those who say: this glass is half empty. The world belongs, however, to those who can look at the glass and say: What's up with this glass? Excuse me? Excuse me? This is my glass? I don't think so. My glass was full! And it was a bigger glass!" Terry Pratchett

I love roasted garlic. My husband probably doesn't love it that I love it....but...such is marriage lol.

I want to smash that garlic into the potatoes. For a singlet I sometimes do a cornish game hen just to get the optimal proportion of skin to meat for a single meal.

I was just thinking about c. game hens. The last ones I did--which was a few years ago- turned out dry dry dry. Maybe they were old....if I recall they were on sale.

When in doubt steam and finish with a glaze under high heat. Quick, juicy and simple.

This has not been trussed properly.

You didn't tell us there was going to be a test.

Oh no! Not improper trussing! Do you think it's going to explode?

(To further scandalize any chicken-trussing purists: I bought it that way. That particular brand trims and trusses the bird before packing it, so it goes into the oven with a minimum of effort.)

Hey, whatever works works, ain't no right or wrong if it tastes good!

Mmmm roast chicken....

An afternoon beverage:

DSCN0085.jpg

5 fresh strawberries

cracked ice

2 oz. light rum

1 oz. Canton ginger liqueur

A squeeze of lemon

-all whipped up with my immersion blender.

Just the thing for a sunny afternoon on the porch.

I like your style.

My naive stereotype of US Southern porches when I was younger involved people sipping Mint Juleps. As I got older, I found out what was in them. And to think that people used to have them in the morning!

Good morning all! It's breakfast time:

Hsppy Easter and Happy Passover to those who are celebrating this week! I don't celebrate either holiday, but I am a wholehearted believer in Spring Break. And you know what that means... Road Trip!

I've got a few hours' drive ahead of me, so I'll see you all sometime this afternoon.

I'm back! Now coming to you from Ocean Isle Beach, NC. The wi-fi here is quite slow, so you won't be seeing so many pictures while I'm here. I'm hanging out on an oceanfront balcony, sipping a glass of rum and ginger ale. It was a long drive - about 200 miles, and not a fast 200 miles at that. I drove straight through, because on Easter morning pretty much everything's closed, but I spotted some likely-looking produce stands and restaurants for the trip home.

No worries on the picture loading - written food porn will do ;)

We had a fantastic blog here years ago that had no images - hard to believe in the visual based times of today.

Balconies, porches- the South!

Dinner:

DSCN0122.jpg

Salami, cold roast chicken, Manchego cheese, 9-grain bread, and a little mayo and mustard. I remembered to bring almost everything I need but forgot to pack paper plates, which is why I'm eating off of a bread bag.

Oh this sounds so relaxing!

Can I be nosy and ask are you meeting up with friends, or is this a vacation for just yourself? I've always wanted to just get away on my own for a couple of days and just do what I wanted the whole time. Even if it's just sitting outside with a glass of wine :)

I'm on my own. It is extremely indulgent and relaxing. I've never done anything like this before - I pretty much went from living with my parents to living with my husband (with a few college roommates in between) and I've never traveled by myself. I was actually a little anxious before heading out this morning - I realize a drive to the beach isn't exactly backpacking through China, but I do feel quite successfully independent.

I would have been nervous, too. I did a 12 hour one way drive and back on my own, though, a while ago and it gave me so much self confidence :)

P.S. I love the eating on the bread wrapper--it's recycling and no dishes.

Lunch (or brekfast, even) of champions. Perhaps especially because you're eating off a shopping bag.

Awesome journey so far.
