I am leaving Germany for a good two weeks for an upcoming Burger Degustation Quest happening in New York....

So my question to all Locals...Where can i find a good ol´Burger with Killer Fries ?

A few destinations are already on my list: Shake Shack, Dumont, Mark, Burger Joint etc.

Shoot,

I'm sure you've found no shortage of online info re the burger craze in NYC. Your on the right track with Burger Joint, Shake Shack, Dumont and Mark. Of them I only know Burger Joint and Shake Shack and both are very good. .

Have you gone through the burger thread?

This guy is descriptive offers a good list and a map http://www.bestburgernyc.com/p/rankings.html

By no means are these currently buzzing but I used to frequent them regularly and they've stood the test of time; Corner Bistro in the W.Vlg (standard cheese burger), Big Nick's on the Upper W.Side (Madrid Burger), Island Burger in Hells Kitchen (The Hippo or Slick Willie).

I've heard good things about the Black Label at Minetta Tavern. DBGB does some gourmet stuff which gets high praise too.

Not that anyone would steer you there but avoid Jackson Hole like the plague. Bad qlty baseball sized burgers

This guy has nearly the same quest as you:

Note that some places who have a notable burger only serve it at lunch (Peter Luger, Little Owl, Prune).

Non-VIPs are only offered 6pm or 10pm dinner reservation times at Minetta Tavern but if you really want to try the Black Label burger, you can:

a) have the burger at the bar

b) have the burger during brunch

AHT....is on my Blog Reader ! and Prune is on my list anyway. I am not a big fan when a restaurant is reduced to one famous item but i gotta taste the sweetbreads @ prune ;-)

thanks!

I don't think there is any possible way you can skip Minetta Tavern's Black Label burger and call that sort of a visit complete. Same for Shake Shack.

Others high on my list:

JG Melon

Corner Bistro (I find it awful, but it's still popular)

Peter Luger (lunch only)

Burger Joint at Le Parker Meridien

Bill's Burger

Five Guys

Shopsins (for sliders if they fit your rule - a billion times better than Mark)

Next tier:

Lure Style Burger at Lure

Spotted Pig

Veselka (far more popular and talked about pre-burger craze)

Blue 9 Burger

Others for consideration:

BLT Burger

BRGR

DB Bistro Burger (the original expensive NY burger - first of many questionable high $$ NY burgers)

Pulino's (after midnight only)

Balthazar (with cheddar)

Sadly I haven't tried the Dumont Burger or the RUB burger.

Had a Parker Meridian cheeseburger w/the works yesterday. As good as ever. Excellent blend of fat and lean meat. Would have left off the mustard (strong flavor for a paddy of this quality) otherwise very nice with the lettuce, pickles, onion, ketchup and mayo. I was thinking about second one but didn't go for it. Fries were just ok. The shock of entering this place - going from a beautiful modern high ceiling hotel lobby to a concealed wooded snack shack never gets old.

Veselka is great-- can't say I ever had the burger though, but delicious soups. Lots of excellent Eastern European in the area. Our go-to at the time for pierogis and the like was Odessa(?), but these things change quickly.

I enjoy Five Guys for both burgers and fries, but don't have access to NYC regularly right now. Corner Burger was good when I ate there many years ago, but perhaps isn't worth a long wait.

Definitely check out Bill's Bar & Burger and Corner Bistro.

Apparently, though, they cook everything to medium-well unless you specify "juicy" when ordering. I wasn't impressed with my burger there and thought the meat had very little flavor or seasoning.

I've tried a few myself, and I can definitely recommend Shake Shack and Standburger. Stand also has easily the best milkshake I've ever had in my life, the Toasted Marshmallow Milkshake.

The diehards, though, seem to converge on J.G. Melon. I've never eaten there, but my NY friends swear by it (and so does Bobby Flay).

One burger spot that does not get mentioned is Rare Bar and Grill. The t-bone burger is amazing and they have an awesome fries basket (sweet potato, waffle, and shoe string) and their onion rings are terrific.

As for others mentioned on the board Peter Luger and the BLB at Minetta are delicious (although MT's fries suck).

Steer clear of the Burger Joint in Parker Meridien. Very overrated.

Shopsin's sliders are mouthwatering goodness.
