In one of those fine articles the author says (paraphrase) the AC's patents on the great MC line ran out and their new owners needed a big selling line so new (inferior) pans had to be designed to allow for mass marketing.

Seems like one of the owners blew it. They were at a fork in the road and chose mass market over luxury brand. The mass market upside was much higher, but the field was crowded. Was there another luxury cookware brand?  Plenty of high class brands survive on buyer loyalty without any patented selling point.  Advertise properly and the sizzle sells the steak.  Is Wolf better than Blue Star?  Not in any way that I can see, but Wolf is in every designer kitchen and upscale house at a $5000 greater price.
