Interesting breakfast in London

Recommended Posts

We're off for a night in London in March. Planning dinner at La Trompette, unless I suddenly unearth the cash and a reservation for La Gavroche / Pied a Terre. Lunch at Brindisia because I've never tried proper Iberico ham. Maybe squeeze in another lunch at the Harwood Arms the next day.

Now, just need somewhere for breakfast. Not too heavy given the other plans. I don't want eggs / bacon / sausage. Any interesting suggestions?

Thanks

While freely declaring my subjectivity and interest, I can honestly recommend Grazing, 19-21 Great Tower St. You can see the menu at grazingfood.com. I'm sure you will find something to enjoy and look forward to seeing a rave review afterwards.

I like Lantana (13 Charlotte Place), it is Australian with a "Bills" like menu, so really great coffee and good breakfast options ranging from fresh and light (home made bircher museli) to more substantial (corn cakes with bacon etc) and IIRC some very good home made baked beans.

I suspect their website was done by a mate from one of the ad agencies around the corner and suffers as a result, here is a pdf of the breakfast men: http://www.lantanacafe.co.uk/pdf/breakfast.pdf

If you are close enough then you could try the Trattoria at Fifteen London. If you aren't in the immediate area the nearest underground station is Old Street.

Although the menu does include the "Full Monty", they also have a range of smoothies, pastries, muesli etc for a lighter breakfast.

I went there several times when I was staying at an appalling hotel nearby for a course. I have to admit that I was skeptical when Duncan suggested this to me, but it was a very pleasant start to the day and certainly much nicer than the hotel would have been (and about half the price).

We had a lovely breakfast at lantana, everything from sweetcorn fritters and good homemade porridge to poached eggs with vegemite and what my sister proclaimed to be the best bacon butty ever. Small and Cosy but well worth a trip

- great coffee too

Lantana's website is exceeded only by that of Sketch in its irritating-ness. I couldn't open any of the PDFs, the map is rubbish - and what's with the cockroach? I work nearby, above a restaurant, so know cockroaces infest these old buildings but do they really want to advertise the fact??

I went to Princi at the weekend - Italian bakery in Soho. Lots of lovely pastries and breads - some filled with nice hams etc. Good coffee. I was impressed.

Less impressed at lunchtime, food still good but unfortunately not worth the scrum for a seat.

Sketch should win an award for its website...truly annoying.

Good to see another boy from the Bont on Egullet!!!!

My thoughts

Providores - you'll queue and then wonder why still an ok breakfast though

Brindisa - better off skipping lunch and buying the Iberico direct from their shop in borough. I hear its expensive for what it is.

Grab lunch at the harwood, hereford rd, market on parkway in camden or one of Hix's joints

Breakfast

Princi is a good shout and easy on the wallet

The wolseley is meant to be very good to be fair there's a book on their breakfasts I believe.

Canteen (branches in Baker st spitafields and south bank)

Is a pretty good breakfast/ lunch stop with some interesting alternate options

You could try conrans place out east

The albion

And for something a bit more antipodean

the modern pantry

for something a little more upmarket and louche try

Sofra is an excellent choice for breakfast. As well as full english and veggie full english they have "mediterranean breakfast" (cheese, bread, jam, eggs), lots of eggy dishes (some with spicy sausages, also menemen which is with green peppers and onion), pide, halloumi, etc. They also have a build your own including feta, sauteed spinach and other interesting things.

They also have an enormous choice of teas - from green, through black to white. Service is excellent, and we received lots of extras like fresh orange juice and hot chocolate shots, plus a bread basket with warm crusty bread, butter and rose petal jam.

For a full on english breakfast you could go to http://www.thecocktavern.com/about/ (breakfast menu not listed) which is underneath smithfield meat market and is open very early in the morning. You can see the market andn the traders in the pub having a pint after work at 8am

Loads of interesting places near buy, i'd recomend http://www.northroadrestaurant.co.uk/ for an interesting and very reasonable lunch
