Lisbon - Visit End of December - Help Please

Hi Everyone

My wife and I are planning our 10th wedding anniversary in Lisbon. Will probably be staying at the Tivoli Lisboa but that has not been decided.

Based on the fabulous help we received for our last trip (Barcelona) we are once again looking for your recommendations. We wish to taste Portugal. Would like dinner choices for 5 nights. Neighborhood locals and up. FYI my wife is fluent in Spanish which may help at local restaurants.

The best restaurant in Lisbon is Tavares, one of new michelin star restaurants in Lisbon. I will recomend surprise menu.

Fortaleza do Guincho is very good for lunch, as you have great views over the ocean.

Thank you so much for your reply. Do you have any dinner suggestions in Lisbon where the locals would eat? We wish to try all levels of dining and really want to try some typical local foods in additon to high end? With us depending on public transportation trips outside the city for dining might not be practical.

Not a restaurant, but the legendary Fabrica dos Pasteis de Belem, a cafe right near the Tower of Belem, is a must-try for any food lover. The Fabrica has been producing probably the most famous pastry in town, the Pastel de Belem (Pastry of Belem), since 1837. It's basically a small custard tart, and it's in fact so popular that the shop typically sells through 1000/day, though the shop record is about 10,000 in one day, from what they told me. Needless to say, expect a wait.

Well, Pasteis de Belem, in my mind, is a total tourist trap. Seriously, if you must eat one, buy it at the front shop (the cutest part) and take it back to your hotel....

As for the top restaurants, apart from Tavares, already mentioned by Paulo,

my favourite is ALMA, owned by chef Henrique Sa Pessoa. He's an ace, and this restaurant is off the beaten tourist path. Super cool, small, intimate. High-end cuisine, but not tecnoemotional, but actually more in the Marco Pierre White style: precise, contemporary, French-based.

I also like Panorama at the Sheraton, despite the fact that... it's at the Sheraton. Leonel Pereira is one of the nicest chefs I know.

Oh, and there's also the posh Eleven restaurant, overlooking a park, great for lazy lunches celebrating a special occasion.
