Old Time Dining in NYC

Recommended Posts

I think I recently read a review of a new book about dining in "the old days" in NYC. If anybody knows what this book is, I would really, really appreciate knowing the name, and any other details you know about it.

THANK YOU !!!!

Overheard at the Zabar’s prepared food counter in the 1970’s:

Woman (noticing a large bowl of cut fruit): “How much is the fruit salad?”

Counterman: “Three-ninety-eight a pound.”

Woman (incredulous, and loud): “THREE-NINETY EIGHT A POUND ????”

Counterman: “Who’s going to sit and cut fruit all day, lady… YOU?”

Newly updated: my online food photo extravaganza; cook-in/eat-out and photos from the 70's

You're probably thinking of Appetite City by William Grimes, the former New York Times restaurant critic. It's an excellent book, highly recommended.

Or, it could be that you're thinking of On The Town in New York, by Michael and Ariane Batterberry.

It's the Landmark History of Eating, Drinking, and Entertainments from the American Revolution to the Food Revolution.
