Electric Knives

I am looking to buy an electric knife. I looked at Cook's Illustrated recommendations, and they recommended one made by Black & Decker. However, I can't find it anywhere in this city. Then I thought to check Amazon and while they carry the B&D Model 700 (as opposed to Model 800 recommended by CI - is the 700 the updated model?), upon reading the reviews, not everyone was particularly pleased with it. So, I'm wondering if anyone out there uses an electric knife, if so, what brand is it and how happy are you with it?

They are great for cutting upholstery foam...

For me, brands don't really matter. They are cheap--usually $20.00. I use one almost exclusively in the pastry section: Cutting quiches, tortes, cakes, etc. Anything soft, squishy or contrasting crisp crusts and soft fillings, for this they can't be beat, but they stay far, far, far away from meats, vegetables or any other non-pastry items--with the exception of aspic terrines.

They do work fairly well for breads--but then so does as decent bread knife.

I'd agree. I've had a couple of B&D knives and they were good. I've also had a few $10 no-name models from a grocery store chain and they were just as good. We use them a few times a week to cut stacked sandwiches (party/slider/double decker style) and always have a couple in the kitchen.

One can pick up an unused or barely used vintage knife -- General Electric, Hamilton Beach, etc. -- for a very reasonable price on eBay. That's how I got my GE.

ElsieD:

I found a seldom-used, electric knife at a thrift store. Perhaps you might find a nice, seldom-used, electric knife at a thrift store in Ottawa? Perhaps you bought one by now.
