Remembering Tom Macaluso

I got the sad news yesterday that Tom Macaluso has passed away. While I didn't know him well, I loved his contribution to the neighborhood and the KC dining scene. He created a space that was truly one of a kind and he understood that a restaurant is supposed to have a personality and a point of view. He was a strong, opinionated, and hilarious character, and he will be missed. I know he has family in New York and Florida, so I'm not sure about any funeral arrangements.

Yes, love him or hate him, no one could deny he was a character and a force to be dealt with.

Macaluso's and Allegro raised the bar on 39th Street and for that we owe him a debt of gratitude.

I'm sure he's stirring things up somewhere. Cheers, big guy.

Obviously, there has never been a more polarizing character in all of KC food-dom as Tom. I think back to the night where he smashed the credit card machine when it wasn't working as quickly as he liked.........or when he hammered on some folks who broke one of his windup toys.......and I know there were plenty of reasons to write him off as an insane flower-loving eccentric.....but dammit I'll miss those floor shows. Macaluso's was one of the first places where I drank TOO much wine just to keep watching the show..............rest in peace Tom.

I can think of only one exception . . . and he has so many personalities, perhaps . . .??
