Now back to the supermarket. Olives like their oil, are very popular here! You are allowed to pick one to taste- I know this sounds awful- butwe are in the mideast!!

Spreads such as organic almond butter,date spread or syrup, fig spread etrog spread (citron?)..


Next we will visit the bakery!! Not a fancy cake one, just the popular one that carries rolls, burekas, croissants, rogelach etc. They were all excited and took the url to check out their bakery. They couldn't understand why they deseerved to be on the internet. And on Friday morning we will visit a Yemenite shop to buy yemenite breads for the Shabbat meal. You are all invited to share shabbat. Typically on Friday morning the university kids come home, sometimes the soldiers, and they are all excited to see each other, eat good food - whether religious or not.

Oh, thank you for the generous welcome, but I think you're welcoming Rebecca263's daughter, known as Kiddle. She's a sweetheart, just like her Mom, and GORGEOUS.

And you'd be an honored guest around the percolator---it's doing its little song every morning between seven/eight and ten or so.

I love the idea of a Garden of Eden plant---pictures?

PS Do those dining chairs roll?---we have a set just like them.

The only imperfections in those chocolates is their lack of proximity to my house!

No, no, no! Not "bad mom" at all. When she is all grown up, she will remember that once in awhile, her mother let her eat nutella first . . . and she will remember it fondly, and she will let her own daughter eat nutella first someday! :wub:

I am enjoying your blog so much. Your markets seem to have a much healthier selection of food than a "typical" supermarket here in the US, and a much better selection of cheeses, herbs and spices. You would be very disappointed if you had to shop at my local supermarkets, but then again, so am I. :sad:

Israel is on my list of countries to visit, but I want to go back to Yemen first, so Israel will probably have to wait until my passport is about to expire (can I go to Israel with a Yemeni visa in my passport?)!

Does your m-i-l ever miss Yemen?

I hope you'll visit some street food stalls for us. My friend's sister lived in Israel for a few years, and she and her ex set up a takoyaki stall (without the tako, of course). She said it was a lot of fun thinking of other things to use, instead! (In case you don't spend much time in the Japan forum, takoyaki are little balls of batter filled with octopus, and cooked on a special grill).

You should see the poor selection of kosher cheeses we have in New Jersey, even in the best kosher markets! It was the same story in Miami Beach, Florida, but a bit less expensive, I will admit.

The cost of cheese here... it's crazy!

The least expensive kosher cheese that you can buy is Muenster, and it's never less than US$9 a pound. THAT price is with a big sale on, too!

Well, you can buy processed "American" cheese for US$7 a pound, but I'd rather do without than eat it, as a rule.

My Kiddle adores grating cheeses and they usually cost US$24 a pound and UP!

I'm Syrian, and there is a Syrian style cheese that is a semisoft round, we just call it cheese- it's a bit salty, but not as a feta, and not crumbly at all, well, it's usually $US15 a pound, and it's just a humble table cheese.

Cheese, I love it so, I do admit, if I was in Israel that would be my big food expenditure.

So let me ask you now, how are prices in Ashkelon? For instance, lamb? I'm wondering if it is cheaper to get decent kosher meat in a country where many people keep kosher?

We just got turkey legs for Shabbat dinner this week, and I paid only US$1.29 a pound for them!

These HAVE to be persimmons, not tomatoes. My love affair with just the LOOK of the fruit cannot have dwindled so far as to cloud my recognition this much.

But the shine---I'm so accustomed to the velvety haze that clouds each one on the tree, and I would have thought this market to be closer to open-air market than one of the SUPERmarket kind which washes and polishes the life and taste out of things. Even if you do not eat them, please buy just one, and set it into a pretty bowl in the sunlight. That brightens a table better than a Waterford chandelier.

Now to go back and catch up on all this wonderful journey.

Those are Persimmons. What a lovely idea to put a tomato in a bowl, one, for beauty! You guys have such amazing ideas and ways of expression! And thanks to everyone for the blog and chocolate compliments- I always feel, hmmmm, should I expose this or that? And then I get all these kind words. What a group!!



Shawarma stand:



I eat the pitas all the time. Ikeep them frozen and zap when I need one. They are muchbetter when eaten right away. I will go down to llok at the ingreds. Next to it is a gluten free bagella.

kbjesq- thanks for supporting my mom qualities! How true and kind!!! I recall the supers there being huge and with an amazing variety of products!! And Rebeccal263, your gorgeous-so I heard- daughter is welcome. My son may be in the states in Aug to travel before going to univ!! As most post military kids do here! They start univ so late here- the usual is 22-23, some even later. I will go check prices now and ingreds!!

So the gluten free pita has corn starch, potato starch, rice flour, gluten free stabilizer, salt, sugar and yeast. A basic yellow cheese here costs appr. 10$ for a kilo (2.2pounds) A fancier one is 14$ a kilo. I just bought 10 thighs and legs of chicken (the leg with the triangle part) for about 20$. Is this expensive or not?

Ilana - it is 2am here. I have to be at work at 7:30am. I am giving a dinner party Friday night and haven't done anything tonight that I needed to do. I have no business sitting here on the internet. And yet I am sitting here! I am simply swamped by the beauty of your country, your food, your voice! Every single blogger gives us a gift of some kind. Your gift seems to be the ability to make me feel really present in your life! Thank you so much for blogging this week. I am just loving it so much. But my boss is going to want to have words with you :raz: ! And your kitties make me want to carry them to the nearest sunny spot for a cat draped nap!

Hi! Home from the madness of the shuk or market!! We call this mess a

ballagan"!! I began with the view I see when walking towards the market. It is a lovely sunny day today-perfect for taking you to the market.

There are lots of people out to buy produce before cooking for the shabbat (sabbath) and everyone wants the best price, the most beautiful tomato, the perfect cucumber. There is a lot of bustle, sellers yelling out their prices and proclaiming to have the best produce. They yell at each other also - with real insult - How dare you think your produce better than mine!! Hey Mrs.!! What do you think?Whose looks best?? And when I ask to take their picture, they yell out:'Take him! Not me!" Then they both laugh and tell me to buy some from each!!

Lots of the people, especiall older women and men, bring abasket on wheels to cart their goods around in. They are very useful, actually.



Best prices from me!! Hey don't touch that cardboard!" Best prices!!!





Croissants etc: "Fresh from the morning!!"

      I'm a Brit. I'm also a closet Frenchman.  To cap it all, I'm happily retired in Bangkok, the city of a street food culture that's second to none. The Thais are healthy and slim. I'm just this side of alive and far from slim. Lockdown has me fantasizing about my days working in London, Paris and New York, an existence, if one could call it that, revolving around gastronomy of one kind or another. They paid me, not so very much as it happens, to do what I enjoy doing most in life. We all get to do it, but I was one of a fortunate few who made it his metier. Well all that's in the past now, but I still dream of my time in Paris when lunch was a tad short of 2-hours, little-known local bistros remained affordable until the day they were discovered by La Bible (Michelin Guide) and the students were revolting - this was the summer of '68, for heaven's sake. Someone should open bistro here in Bangkok with a table d'hote of Soupe a l'Oignon gratinee, Blanquette de Veau, a stinky Epoisses and Tarte Tatin to finsih with creme fraiche. Ah, it's back to lockdown and pad Thai.

      I was thinking of doing a food blog of my recent trip through parts of New Zealand's south island.  Most of the food we had was nothing spectacular, but the experiences and various scenery we had over the trip were amazing.  Is there any interest in this?

      It's one o'clock on a warm summer's day in Florence, I'm on my way to get ingredients for lunch. The sun is high in the sky, the cobblestones are warm under my feet and the aroma of something delicious is in the air. My mind starts to drift to the onions, celery and tomatoes I need for my pasta sauce, oh and don't forget something sweet for dessert...this truly is la dolce vita.
      My thoughts are soon interrupted by an unwelcome "chiuso" sign on the door of my new favorite deli. The blinds are closed and the friendly owners are nowhere in sight. The reality of having my favorite pasta dish for lunch was slipping further and further away.
      What a nightmare! How can this be?
        A local passing by must have noticed my frustration.   "Signorina, è riposo. Tutto è chiuso!"
        Of course! How could I forget about the sacred Italian siesta?
        A siesta or riposo, as most Italians call it, is a time of rest. This time is usually around midday, or the hottest part of the day (very inconvenient if you're craving a bowl of pasta.) No one can really say where the tradition of the siesta originates, but many say it's all about food (no surprises there really).
        For many Italian families the main meal of the day is lunch. This heavy meal in the middle of the day is attributed to the standard Mediterranean diet: A minuscule breakfast of a coffee and pastry , a heavy lunch and an evening meal around 10 o'clock. The logic is that after such a heavy meal one would surely be drowsy and need to rest, no one can work efficiently on a full stomach!
        Post offices, car rentals, supermarkets and even coffee shops (in some smaller towns police stations too) all close their doors for a riposo. Everything comes to a standstill as every Italian goes home to kick of their shoes, enjoy a homemade lunch with family and bask in the Italian sunshine for three to four hours. This is serious business. One would not dare work for 8 hours straight. After their riposo most businesses open again around 4 o'clock and stay open till 7pm. Its the perfect balance between work and play and does wonders for your digestive system!
        "Grazie!" I thanked her for the reminder. The midday sun started to become unbearable. The streets had cleared with only a few tourists braving the midday heat still around. I thought about the strawberries I bought from the market earlier that week. Strawberries for lunch on my shaded balcony and maybe a nap afterwards sounded like my perfect riposo. The pasta will have to wait till 4.

      OK.... here we go again!!!  While this post is a bit premature (we don't take off until around 1:30AM tonight), I am extremely excited so I figured I'd just set up the topic now.  As in previous foodblogs, I may post a bit from time to time while we're there, depending on how good my internet connection is, and how much free time I have... but the bulk of posting will really get started around July 9th - the day after we get home (hopefully without too much jetlag!!!)

      Happy New Year!  I'm sitting at the gate waiting for my flight from Saigon to NYC connecting through Taipei so I figured this would be a good opportunity to get started... But this is just the intro- the rest will gave to wait until I land about 22 hours from now, sleep for about 12 hours, then get my photos in order! We had a great week enjoying beautiful weather, taking in the frenetic yet relaxed street life and eating some amazing local food...
      Our flight here was on EVA Airline and was very pleasant and uneventful. Our flight from Nyc to Taipei left around 12:20 AM on the 24th. I love those night flights since it makes it very easy to get a decent amount of sleep, even in coach. EVAs food is quite good eith both Chinese and western choices for dinner and breakfast, and they came through several times with snacks such as a fried chicken sandwich with some kind of mustard. I think I had 4 of them!
      Once I get home, I'll continue posting with pics from our feast in the Taipei airport.... Spoiler: those who have read my Singapore foodblog from July may see a slight trend...
