mail order cheese in the UK

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know of a mail order cheesemonger who has a type of 'cheese of the month' scheme similar to the ever-popular 'wine of the month' clubs? I've looked at a number of sites; Paxton and Whitfield, Neal's Yard, the Cheese Society and they all send a selection of cheeses, usually 4. The person I'd be buying this gift for would never get through that amount. A monthly cheese would be more than enough but I can't seem to find an outlet that offers this.

as far as i know no one does a "monthly cheese" similar to the organic vegetable box schemes.

I have no experience of their mail order services, but both Neal's yard and the Fine Cheese Company in Bath do monthly cheese selections.

The one from the Fine Cheese Company looks similar to the organic vegetable box idea: see here for more details. The website says:

We choose cheeses from what is in season and in the best condition, and we provide detailed cheese notes  so you can learn about what you are eating. (So much more fun than the Open University.)

For the Neal's yard offerings look here.

Neither of these is cheap and my own feeling is that so much cheese every month is way over the top, although Neal's yard also does a quarterly selection.

Think that's what Che is saying. A lot of them do a monthly selection. Mr O bought me the monthly Paxton and Whitfield one a couple of years ago which was fantastic but it was an awful lot of cheese. I haven't found one that does just one cheese. I guess the best path would be to phone and ask them if they can do it for you. In my experience the specialist places are so helpful especially as they are so passionate about their product. Why not give a few of them a call and ask?

Maybe Che might consider doing a cheese of the month?

it has been mentioned in marketing discussion before - both here and in france. especially since we have a range of french, english and italian cheeses...probably one of the largest online in the UK, certainly of that quality at least.

would you think this to be a good idea? how would you want it to work? also, would charcutere be interesting as well?

You'd get me as a customer for sure

ditto: I've just placed an order for several cheeses and some goose foie, must say the way you display the products on your site is excellent....very informative and easy to use.

I have found the cheeses supplied by Che to be really excellent, the web site information is very good, making it easy to pick ones to try.

Pate and salami are also fantastic.

I guess it would be fun to have a surprise selection each month but I really like picking out my own.

I would recommend ordering some Poilane bread to go with them.

What would be nice would be a simple 'cheese of the month club'. For an annual fee (or 6 month fee) a featured cheese would be sent out to subscribers. For an additional cost per month you could also have 'extras' - a featured bread or biscuit of the month to go along with the cheese or even a selection of charcuterie. To be able to start with that basic 'cheese of the month' (and nothing else) is essential in my eye. No one else provides such a service - you usually get lumbered with 3 or 4 cheeses which is great if you're having a party or eat lots of cheese but it is just too much for a small household and is also too expensive. Affordability and simplicity are key.

i really like some of these ideas - they will definitely be considered in January once we get through Christmas. i especially like the single country/multi-country option...we could even rotate the countries to each month - logically following the seasons.

we started working with neal's yard about three months ago, and only now are sales starting to be relevant. i probably should but honestly don't know why it is so much harder still to sell english cheese than french or italian. certainly our brand and offer is decidedly more french/italian, but nevertheless...

lapin - it's great to hear feedback like yours...thanks. when you get a chance you should try some Jack O'Shea products, it is by far the best meat i have had outside of Argentina.

Found a monthly"cheese masterclass" here.

From The Fine Cheese Co in Bath. You don't have to sign up for a 12 month contract; here's the blurb:

"Every Masterclass contains around 700g of freshly cut and individual cheeses (enough for 6-8 people) PLUS a pack of our own The Fine Cheese Co. Crackers (a different one every month) and tasting notes. Our monthly Masterclass arrives on the first Thursday of each month, ready for the weekend.

A monthly masterclass costs £32.50 including overnight delivery to UK mainland destinations. "

I do get the Paxton & Whitfield box on a monthly basis (£30 including delivery). It's always four cheeses, mostly there is a blue, a soft and a hard cheese in the mix. Countries can vary between Britain, France, Switzerland, Italy, Spain and even Scandinavia. I never have a problem finishing the four pieces, all together is usually less than a kilo and comes well packaged in a parcel with cooling elements. A nice way to taste different varieties, specially since they also send detailed information on every cheese. Only one time I had to through an entire cheese out as it was absolutely inedible. But that was personal taste, other people may have enjoyed it.
