For prettiest, these Striped Caverns win in my garden. They are hollow, like a bell pepper. I have plans for stuffing them with a tabouli salad. Tastewise, I will take the German Pink, which you can see just a bit of in the upper left corner.

OK, stupid question, but are they supposed to be hollow? I suppose with the name Striped Caverns they are. Are they best recommended for stuffing? Any other good uses? I've never heard of or seen these, so I'm curious.

Yep, they are required to be hollow! :biggrin: It is amazing the similarities in appearance when you slice off the top, between these toms and bell peppers.

They have wide walls, though, that make them nice for tuna or egg salad. I don't grow the stuffers, but like my stuffed tomatoes all the same.

If you have too many, it would be relatively easy to use them for sauce, salsa, etc. Easy to clean seed and gel. But why would you grow a stuffer and not stuff?

The Seed Saver's Exchange has something better than 1,000 varieties (and I think I am going way low on that estimate) to choose from - and many people passionate about toms willing to trade and talk. You wouldn't believe what is out there!

Anyone that grows tomatoes has a pass in my book. Good job sparrowgrass! Lovely. Maybe you can show a pic of one sliced open for the uninitiated?

I have never tried any of these varieties, could you please give a little rundown to us about taste and texture? BTW, drool-inducing pic!

I've never heard of Trust. Is that the purple/black huddled in the middle? Or is that Black Krim?

Lovely name for a tom. Growers must exhibit much trust... :rolleyes:

Trust is the round red guy in the front - he's a pretty-boy red, perfect shape, kind of pulpy. I think it's a hydroponic variety. I have bought these several times and he needs to be very ripe to be tasty (but, I guess, don't they all?). The purple guy in the middle is the Black Krim, who is kind of ugly but tastes great! I'll post a pic when I get around to eating him later this week. :wub:

Here's Trust sitting atop the Carolina Gold (big yellow guy in the back of my original picture). Carolina Gold is firm and silky inside with very little seedy pulp. Makes a great bottom layer in a stack! But this one needs to be paired with somebody more flavorful or a nice cheese... he's not good by himself just to munch on.

The real question is why do I refer to the tomatoes in the masculine? :laugh:

My Early Girls are finally ripe (????) and I've gotten some others from our wonderful Saturday Farmers Market in Templeton, and OTHERS from the office where people are beginning to bring in bounty from their gardens :wub: (I've benefited from pomegranates and lemons in the past; tomatoes are too much of a dream ! Just don't bring me zucchini... :wacko: )

My Black Cherries are so sweet (with very little acid) to be almost inedible. The dogs love them. I have a yellow pear given to me by a friend that is prolific..........the fruit is almost tasteless. I thought something had happened to my tastebuds until I had some better tomatoes. I guess I figured that ALL homegrown tomatoes are awesome. Not so.

I have a Rainbow, Rad Red (good for hot climates--didn't thrive until temps hit the 90's !) and a German Strawberry coming up. We'll see. This is quite a process of elimination, isn't it?

I've been gorging on fresh moz, basil (lots of) and Persian Cukes from Trader Joe's; also made a LABNA from that wonderful Mediterranian Cheese style yogurt (also TJ's) which pairs so well with Rosemary and Olive Oil Triscuits , tomatoes and cukes.

Dinner, right there. :smile:

viva, funny you should mention that, but I have always referred to toms in the masculine as well. Maybe it's all the "boys" out there. Big Boy, Better Boy, etc. I don't know why either. Trust is a very pretty boy!

dockhl, I am growing Black Cherry for the first time this Fall, and was concerned about the sweetness. There are some white corns that I don't care for because they are too sweet for me - I really like a little sass from my toms! :biggrin: Hubby loves the sweet ones, though, so it won't be a total loss no matter which way it comes out. Have you ever tried Sungold? If so, can you give it a comparison? It tastes very sweet to me, but has enough tangy undertones to the flavor that I find it enjoyable. I am growing Black Cherry because it supposedly has the flavor that the larger blacks all have, which to me is smoky and rich.

Yes, pictures. :biggrin: I love to live vicariously! Homegrowns tend to be unphotogenic, but that's how I like them!

Sungold wins hands down. Black cherry is anemic and tasteless by comparison, just a funny and rather unattractive colour, Sungold is also much more productive.

Other winners are Gardeners deilight, and Brandywine

Cool. I am putting in Gardener's Delight this Fall as well and its a first timer for me. Between the three, I should be able to make a very pretty salad, if nothing else!

Sungold would be hard to beat flavor and production wise - but hubby isn't too keen on them for some reason. He likes big, sweet red or pink beefsteaks - although he does make an exception for Kelloggs Breakfast. The blacks and purples sort of skeeve him out appearance wise, but the sauce and salsa they make is a favorite for him. I can't wait to see his reaction when I slice up the first Black Sea Man! :biggrin:

Brandywine is such a tempermental tomato, and just pouts in my climate. I wish I could grow it, because I love them.

:sad: I went out to water my tomatoes this morning........All 14 of my babies were gone! I mean, actually Gone! Something ate them down to nothing but a small nub sticking out of the soil, I container planted on the deck this year, just for that reason, and they were all so lush and beautifull, even had some ripening. And the worst, whatever it was didn't like the taste of my beefsteak and just left it's poor body laying on the deck. I realy feel like crying right now, but I won't. I am getting Revenge! Taking out the bb gun and I am going to sit and wait........*evil angry mother grin*

:sad:  I went out to water my tomatoes this morning........All 14 of my babies were gone!  I mean, actually Gone!  Something ate them down to nothing but a small nub sticking out of the soil,  I container planted on the deck this year, just for that reason, and they were all so lush and beautifull, even had some ripening.  And the worst, whatever it was didn't like the taste of my beefsteak and just left it's poor body laying on the deck.  I realy feel like crying right now, but I won't.  I am getting Revenge!  Taking out the bb gun and I am going to sit and wait........*evil angry mother grin*

It doesn't, at least here for me. (YMMV) It is just sweet, with no acid.

The color isn't even "black" like the good blacks and purples. It is a pale and translucent, weird color.

I have no idea what it was, no footprints. It even ate my marigolds! I thought everything hated Marigolds. There are all sorts of critters around here, but what would Dare come up on the deck? Not eating my Beefsteak............That's what realy ticked me off! Like viva said, it had Better eat what it steals! I guess it's farmers market again for me this year. *sigh*
