My hubby and I just found this in our local store this week , first time I have ever seen it there. I did not know you even had special glasses for it.

I was wondering what the best way is to drink this stuff.. I heard a rumour that you were supposed to mix it with water and sugar ?

I am almost too scared to try it.. what is the general opinion on it out there ?

Saffy - there has been much talk about Absinthe on this site (use search function). From what I can gather authentic - state-of-reality-altering Absinth, doesn't really exist. Much of the stuff sold as Absinth is just green dyed booze. Even stuff made from authentic recipes don't have enough wormwood naughtiness to actually do anything.

If you want to get well stoned cheaply and legally, order some mexican sage leaves of the web. Strong stuff, it may permenently alter your personality though.

Try baked banana peels .. now that's bad.. and as for the nutmeg.. I don't think I will be trying that anytime soon! :)

btw.. I had a couple of mouthfuls of absinthe and decided there were more pleasant ways to spend my time - like eating the freshly made pumpkin and chocolate chip cookies!! :)

Hee's one source:

and here's another:

You must mix the stuff with sugar and water to drink it.

There are some authentic brands available, but they are expensive ($60-80 a bottle).

The original absinthe poisoning came not from the wormwood, as thought, but from lead contaminants in the production and bottling process.

I have a small collection of authentic carafes, glasses, spoons, advertising. The main dealer in the US is in Chicago, and the French dealer ("Frenchman Phil") sold out his business a couple of years ago. Check eBay.

This place sells what seem to be authentic Absinthe:
