Spanish or Portuguese Bottleshop in Melbourne

Recommended Posts

Does any one know of a bottle shop or licensed grocer that has a Spanish or Portuguese focus, in Melbourne?

There's Casa Iberica, 25 Johnston St, Fitzroy and Viva Spain in North Melbourne - which I haven't got to myself yet. Don't know if they sell wine but someone else no doubt will be able to tell you.

I'm pretty sure that they aren't licensed. Great shop none the less.

I'm really looking for a source of Spanish and Portuguese wines, ports and liqueurs that is a little more extensive than the meager offerings at Dan's.

There are after all plenty of bottle shops with a focus on French or Italian wines, for example.

I think I remember seeing a few options, though definitely not a 'focus', at King and Godfreys (sp?) in Lygon Street. Much more italian/australian focused of course. I am sure there is something like you're looking for around ...

A good selection of Italian, but not my favorite shop, they have a rather off hand way of dealing with (potential) customers.

OK. A serious racking of memory and judicious use of Google has uncovered a couple bits that might be what you're after:

http://www.tintoyblanco.com.au/?page_id=157

a fair few listed there, including boccacio cellars and rathdowne cellars... have a look.

also found this quote: His name is Scott Wasley and back in the lead-up to the 2000 Sydney Olympics, he and a mate escaped the sporting hype and sought refuge in Spain. The journey proved to be an epiphany. When he returned to Australia in 2001, plans for a bar-restaurant were cast aside as a new business seed was planted to import Spanish wines.

So Wasley started The Spanish Acquisition in Collingwood, importing a modest 80 cases of wines.

Today, he ships 10 refrigerated containers a year, including 1 1/2 containers of sherry.

also take a look here at suppliers: http://www.melbournefoodandwine.com.au/htm....asp?Event=5177

good luck! Have found some interesting stuff thanks to your post...

Thanks some interesting leads in there I'll check them out.

You might also try giving Matt McConnell a call at his tapas restaurant, Bar Lourinha, and find out where he sources all his Spanish wine. Tel 9663 7890. Better still call in there for some of his great food and ask in person!!

OK the Spanish side of things seems to have been quite well covered

Any ideas on the Portuguese side. I'm specifically interested in white port.

Casa Iberica is not a wine supplier although they may know who will sell wines etc. Over the years I have become dissatisfied with the stuff they sell, generally its second or third rate and I am not talking gourmet produce then again they have no one to compete for years the only true competition bailed out a year or so ago.

Miguel started to import Spanish and South American (Chilean) wines years way back in 1990 from South Yarra and then moved to nearby Tullamarine he is now the largest importer in Victoria but I have lost contact with him.

Portuguese wines may be a problem since there is not much variety except for the fortified wines. I don't think Spanish are keen on importing Portuguese stuff anyway.

I'll ask around for Portuguese stuff and will take some time unless you need a good quantity either bottled or other form. I don't deal in small quantities myself

  • 2 months later...

We discovered Rathdowne Cellars (348 Rathdowne Street, North Carlton) on the weekend, they have a great selection of Spanish wines and Portuguese ports, and to top it all off the staff are knowledgeable, helpful and above all friendly.
