  1. Looking for a really good breakfast tomorrow morning. Staying in the area of 31st and 6th. Nearby would be cool, but greatness comes first.
  2. Would anyone have any suggestions about an early morning breakfast to conduct business? I'm looking for a non-hotel setting with an emphasis on delicious food. Many thanks in advance.
  3. Yesterday we were fortunate enough to share Sunday brunch at Simpatica with Tejon, Duckduck, eJulia, Cat Lancaster, and a couple of their buds. It's an unusual place - a caterer by day, an email-list weekend dinner spot, and open every Sunday for brunch. Duckduck is a friend of the (really nice and clean) kitchen so they treated us really well. It's a very hard menu to choose from, as everything sounds great, and all the passing plates are appealing. These pictures aren't the best, and I missed a few dishes in the rush to make new friends, but here's some of what you can expect if you manage to go there. Eggs Benedict with house-cured ham and roasted potatoes. All of their meats are house-cured, which is a real treat. Andouille and smoked salmon hash The kitchen sent this out, since none of us had the good sense to order it - Crab and shrimp strata, even better than what I ordered. I hate it when that happens. their house-cured bacon (and I have to say, not quite as good as what we've been making over on the Charcuterie thread, but still very tasty) crepes stuffed with asparagus, ham, and er, something. I didn't take notes, so I'm just winging it here. fried chicken and waffles, with strawberry sauce. They had two desserts on the menu so we ordered one of each for the table - a chocolate decadence-type cake, and an olive oil and lemon cake with a rhubarb compote. The kitchen also sent us a great panna cotta with a compote of dried currants, raisins, and blueberries. They all disappeared before I could get my camera to focus, at least, that's my excuse. It was a true pleasure to meet such a lovely bunch of Portlanders, and to brunch together in the cozy and yummy Simpatica Dining Hall. Go, if you get a chance. Reservations for groups of 8 only.
  4. Hello! I'm doing monthly brunches for a group of friends, and we all like a light cocktail with brunch to start the day out right. The next brunch will be more southern-themed, more breakfast-y, and kind of heavy with grits, biscuits and gravy, hamsteaks, etc. Do you have any suggestions for a couple of cocktails to serve with this meal? I might do a cajun-style Bloody Mary, but I wanted something lighter and maybe fruity or frothy for the guests who don't like tomato juice. Thanks!!
  5. So, we're* finally heading off to San Francisco in July for a 10-day visit, staying with my stepson in the Potrero district the first few nights (THANKS, guys, for the neighborhood eatery recommendations), then driving up to Napa & Sonoma with a 2-night stay in Calistoga. We've been to SF and wine country many times, though not for several years. However, our flight arrives from Honolulu at 6:15 a.m. on a weekday. We're not due at SIL's house till 6 p.m. Where should we go/eat in between, especially early breakfast spots? We'll be picking up a rental car at the airport and were thinking of driving into town to check out the new-to-us Ferry Marketplace, but I just read that most of the shops don't open till 10 a.m. We'll also probably need a shady place to park and catch a few winks. Ideas? * We = me, my husband, and our 9 year old daughter.
  6. OK - eGulletteers, I am always in search of good breakfast or brunch places in San Francisco. I have to say that, after living in this great culinary capital for 5+ years, I am consistently underwhelmed by the quality of offerings in the breakfast category. I would roughly group breakfast spots into the following buckets: - Greasy spoons/ diner types: this description is pretty self-explanatory. What you see is what you get - simple dishes, simple prices, simple service. The basics. Some are greasier than others. Some actually cook and season their home fries; others give you something that could best be described as potato salad before it becomes the salad. There are some I like, but I am always looking for new suggestions; - Mega-breakfast/Insulin shockers: these places go for the "more is better" approach. Muffins that could feed 100 starving children, stacks & stacks o' pancakes and waffles with copious amounts of whipped cream, butter, etc. Generally mountains of food. Never bring a European friend to a place like this - along with our presidential situation, it only gives them another reason to hate us, unless you learn how to say "I didn't vote for him" in French. I tend to stay away from these places, but maybe there are some that like them, so I'd like to hear favorites as well; - Semi-refined/yuppie-type places: You've seen these places as well - people line up around the block for scrambled eggs with some smoked salmon and capers tossed in, and chicken apple sausage. Sort of an in-between place between the greasy spoons and the mega-breakfast. Which are your favorites here? - Brunch-oriented: Self-explanatory as well. Focused on brunch; higher-end and lower-end. Places you take mom on mother's day and stuff like that. Do you like these and where do you go if you do? - Gourmet breakfast: These are bakeries and/or restaurants that serve breakfast where the focus is on putting out a good product, at a decent price, where the portions are enough to make you full enough to get to lunch vs. full enough to get you to dinner. They know how to do the simple things well, like: scramble eggs, cook potatoes, make a plate of breakfast food look very nice, find fresh fruit, pour a good cup of coffee, juice oranges, etc. I really cherish these kind of places, but have not found many of them at all. I'd really like to hear your thoughts about these spots. So, let's hear from the group on what your favorites are (if any) in these categories, or if you have other categories to add to the list. And, please bear with my tongue-in-cheek descriptions - they are not meant to offend. To recap, we have: Greasy spoons/ diner types Mega-breakfast/Insulin shockers Semi-refined/yuppie-type places Brunch-oriented Gourmet breakfast
  7. We are planning an informal catered brunch at home for 40-50 people for a 60th Birthday Party in North Jersey (Essex-Morris). Any suggestions for a caterer?
  8. Hi all - looking for an after dinner suggestion for a bar. We'll be eating dinner at Tru (can't wait!) on Wednesday night on our one night tour of Chicago. Are there any cool bars or places to listen to music in the area that we should check out after dinner? Also - any good breakfast spots? We'll be staying at the W on North Lakeshore Drive. Thanks all for the advice.
  9. I know there have been some brunch discussions here before but I need a place for this Sunday that can accomodate 9 people with relative ease, with a young baby. Yikes. Everybody here came through big time when this Montrealer was in need of Philadelphia restaurant advice ... now I need a great brunch place! There are too many for me to choose from ... El Vez, Standard Tap (would prefer not, because I want to eat dinner there Sunday night), Carman's Country Kitchen (looks small), La Croix (looks expensive), Jones, Rx ... what do you all think?
  10. My boyfriend has expressed interest in cooking and I am doing my best to encourage it. He wants his first project to be a breakfast casserole. It needs to be very, very basic. Nothing that includes too many "fru fru" ingredients that may intimidate him. I really just need a recipe that works well for throwing stuff into a dish and sticking it in the oven. A good recipe to build upon--so he can eventually make it his own. Anyone have any tried-and-true recipes that they don't mind sharing? Thanks for the help!
  11. Inspiration courtesy of Epicurious.com We have a Mega-thread on Breakfast full of yummy ideas and photos ... and we have a thread on Bed and Breakfasts .. So, now comes: Eating and/or serving Breakfasts in Bed ... Like it or hate it? Do you make them for others? Is it too messy for you to deal with as the donor or the recipient? Favorite things you desire to be served to you?
  12. I'm currently planning a two-week trip that will have me in Oahu on one Sunday, and on the Big Island (Kailua-Kona area) the next. Any suggestions for great brunches? Neighborhood places and fancy resort buffets are both welcome. Many thanks!
  13. article from MSNBC Has anyone tried the sandwiches at Starbuck's? If so, what was your impression? Did it take any longer than just getting a latte?
  14. I love Alpen for breakfast, but as it is an imported item it is expensive so I was wondering if any one had a formula for making it yourself. Thanks
  15. Some good friends are taking us to brunch at Feenie's on Sunday. Has anyone been? If so, is it a buffet (so we can chow down on a bit of everything) or do we order? And if the latter, any suggestions?
  16. Hello, I'm looking for recommendations for white-tablecloth type breakfast place in the LA area. The bets I've had so far is Joe's brunch in Venice (which was great), looking for similar, if a bit fancier for a special occasion. Any ideas?
  17. So my plan is to wake up early and drive up to Balthazar from Philly for breakfast. My girlfriend and I have the car for the day, so we were also going to take a ride up to Arthur Avenue (never been before, want to see how it compares to the Italian Market in Philly) later on. I'm thinking we walk to the Essex Street Market after breakfast, but from there I'm not sure. Ang (the gf) said that she always feels like we go to NYC without a plan and end up lost, frustrated and in general totally discombobulated (hey, I actually spelled that right on the 1st try!). I am reaching out to you, fellow eGulleters. Help me plan my day in NYC. We're both in the food industry and we're up for anything. So far its just Balthazar and Arthur Avenue, no plans for lunch or dinner (I'd like to show her the Shake Shack maybe, especially if the weather is still ungodly warm). Obvious tag: the gf also loves to shop - so even though this is generally a food-related question, feel free to mention where we can find the haute couture as well... Man, I can't believe I just asked about haute couture. I think I need to go eat some red meat. Thanks in advance!!!
  18. O.K. three couples coming from Ireland looking for a good Sunday brunch.in Manhattan. Good food and cocktails a mus, anyone with recommendations? Arriving the 2nd dec and one of the party has birthday for tye second so something out of this world would not be amiss. G
  19. I'll be in NYC in a few weeks for a long weekend. While I've had no problem making reservations for dinner/lunches on the weekdays, I must admit, this non-NYC native is having a hard time coming up with some great places to try on the weekend mid-day meals... I'm trying to maximize my eating opportunities (ie higher-end establishments). Suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Cheers. u.e.
  20. We got home a little later than expected tonight and could not decide what to have for dinner so realizing that there were plenty of eggs left over fr/ Easter festivities and some sausage in the fridge fr/ a casserole I made the other day we decided to have breakfast for dinner. I made sausage gravy, cheddar grits, and eggs (over easy) while Fuss made biscuits that I slathered w/ grape jelly not only made by my mother but fr/ grapes grown by her as well. We opened a bottle of cheap bubbly and threw some cranberry juice in Fuss' for poinsettias and oj in mine for mimosas and just thoroughly enjoyed our selves (esp. since the Braves destroyed the Mets tonight). Any others get a hankering for good old-fashioned, artery-clogging breakfast food at dinner time? It should be a requirement that you partake at least once a month or so. To make matters even better we have left over biscuits for my lunch tomorrow.
  21. Is there any places to get a good hot order of French Toast that is NOT fast-food, IHOP or a Diner? Must be in Bergen County preferably close to Westwood area. Delivery would be a plus, but highly doubtful. NO, I don't want to make it - to someone in the wings who may add their two cents worth.
  22. The husband made the executive decision to throw out our cheap hard to clean waffle maker. I'd like to replace it with something that will: a) be easy to clean b) make an excellent waffle c) store relatively easily d) last for a looong time e) be family friendly, ie: big f) not cost a fortune I don't think I want a large-hole Belgian type waffle maker. And while we're on the topic, what is your favorite waffle recipe or way to eat waffles? I really like overnight yeasted waffles. We usually just eat them with syrup.
  23. I'm going to meet my dad and his wife for brunch on Sunday, April 2nd. I'm from PA and he's near the shore, so I thought Princeton would be a nice place to meet ... maybe hit the U museum or just stroll Nassau Street. What are some nice brunch places in or near Princeton? I grew up in the Hightstown area (haven't lived there in years), so I'm familiar with the suburbs. I'm looking for someplace that's under $30 p/p, nice variety, maybe a little adventurous. It can be lunch, too, if it's a really great place that doesn't do brunch. Thanks for your help!
  24. I need your help, What are your favorite places to have breakfast. I need suggestions. Name any part of town. I am not a breakfast resto expert. High art to greasy spoon, whatever get your engines revving in the morning.
  25. I'm not a kid. All my life my hash browns are garbage. Little cubes of potatoes, a little fat , salt and pepper, maybe some onion, right? Nope. Never mind the pan. Nonstick ,cast iron, or anything in between. I cannot flip the pan.I am not a chef. If I try the flip thingy, the contents first hit my chest, then the floor. Ok, I need a spatula. Now that we have established my ground rules. No matter what I do, I get this. I want little cubes of potato, soft inside, crispy outside. I try to turn potatoes, crispy sticks to pan, soft gets mushed into center. I end up with semi-crunchy mashed potatoes with all the good stuff stuck to the pan. All in one ball that cannot be separated. I an damned determined to do this right before I die. At least once. Help? If I don't get good answers within one week, after that date , I WILL consider sleeping with anyone who can answer this question? But the resultant taters would have to be REALLY good.
