I'm doing a dessert buffet at home on Saturday for about 20 people. I have an outline, but I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around the details. I tried to break it down to chocolate, fruit, and nuts. Tell me what I'm missing.
Chocolate raspberry tart (from Dorie's book)
petit fours
a cherry cranberry layered cookie
rugelach (sp?) mostly with nuts and apricot jam, some with chocolate
7 layer bars
coffee
sparkling wine
port
tea and sodas

iii, I agree that it would be interesting to see if there is anything that HASN't been tried yet. There's got to be something! It might be fun to give that a try.
I was curious, too. So I went back and started listing what has been made. Here's what we've made to, in order of appearance. I don't think I have duplicates, but a few may have slipped in.

I've been working through the muffins, but posted in the Muffin Bake off thread

Naftal, I have been to that site. I searched eGullet, Chowhound (posts out of date) and the tourist sites related to New Buffalo and Harbor Country. It's hard to find anything other than a directory. Did not think to check LTHforum. Duh. Thanks for the links Alex.
You're welcome. However, the posts on my Chowhound link are all from the past four months, including a moderately detailed report about Everyday People and Journeyman on July 31. You must not have found that one in your search.
Yes, of course. I was referring to posts re: New Buffalo, which is where we are staying this weekend. Those areas are farther than we are going this weekend, but are definitely useful for future reference.

We are traveling from Chicago to Harbor Country, specifically New Buffalo, next weekend. SW Michigan seems a popular weekend destination for many, but there's little to no discussion of where to eat. We will be in New Buffalo next weekend, but intend to take more trips in the future, exploring the area. Suggestions for eating, drinking, and food related shopping from the IL border to Saugatuck are appreciated. If you have a cabin, inn or b&b rec, I'd love to hear that, too, though slightly off topic.

I have the Wm Sonoma Ice Cream book and it is very good. I also have pies and tarts, and the cake one. They do a surprisingly good job. I'll have to watch for the muffin book.
I made the multigrain muffins from Dorie's book. I forget the exact name, but they have flour, wheat flour, oats, and cornmeal, maple syrup, and dried fruit. I wasn't sure I would like the texture with the cornmeal, but they were pretty good. If you like cornbread, you would like this muffin. I am kind of eh on corn bread, so eh on these. They will get eaten, but I won't likely make them again, simply personal preference. As with the citrus berry muffins, the recipe made exactly 12 muffins.

Here are the zucchini muffins. I used a typical heavy on the oil and sugar recipe, but subbed applesauce for most of the oil and Splenda for most of the sugar, using brown sugar for the rest. I stuck them all in sandwich bags and threw them in the freezer. They were pretty good this morning when they had thawed by breakfast time.
Tonight, I made the citrus berry muffins from Baking: From My Home to Yours.
Even the batter is pretty
This recipe made exactly 12 muffins. Not a smidge more or less. I like not having to bake a pan and a half, or do something else with left over batter. They are light and not sweet really at all. Almost not sweet enough, but that probably depends, too, on the berries. You can really taste the orange, but it isn't overpowering.

Thanks for adding this topic, Kerry! I have to cut back on my usual breakfast of yogurt. I am NOT a morning person, and usually eat breakfast once I have arrived at work and settled in for the day. I have made blueberry pancakes and frozen them to take, but I thought it would be good to have an assortment of muffins in the freezer. My husband will also take some to work for his midday snack.
Tonight, I am making zucchini muffins with raisins and walnuts. It's a recipe I'm going to fiddle with. It's hard to find one for zucchini that doesn't have a ton of sugar and oil. I'll be using some, but not all, Splenda, and some applesauce instead of oil.
Then, I'm going to make the citrus berry ones from Dorie's book.
I'm looking forward to the posts here and gaining some yummy new recipes.

They are waaay beyond me, home baker that I am.

you visit all the people in your building that might have a chocolate stash.
you eat the day old pastries in the teachers' lounge. You KNOW they weren't good to start with if they lived to be a day old in the teachers' lounge.
you see one of your middle school students with candy in the hallway and instead of making them throw it out or giving them detention, you make them share with you 50/50.

I too enjoy going to restaurant supply stores. I was looking for a chinois and at w-s it was 80+. Went to my store in Chicago and got a sturdier one for 25.
Where's your Chicago store? Inquiring westsiders want to know!

I'm definitely interested, and may be able to help with planning closer to the event. Will keep an eye on this thread.

I have driven by a couple of times now, but anyone gone to the Kwik-E-Mart? Had squishies? Anything else??
or at CBC:
Sorry, as far as I know there still will be no beer available either....

We live in Chicago, IL and our friends stopped by today to bring us this:

I used to be a casual date checker, pulling from the front and giving the date a quick eyeball. Then I found some potato salad with a sell by date over a year old. When I took it to the guy at the Deli, he thought I was mistaken. But he double checked, and I was right. There were about a dozen containers with the same date. I now check everything very carefully.

I have a big Kitchenaid side by side. I like the pull out baskets in the freezer, and don't have any lack of space in there. The shelves in the fridge pull out, which is handy sometimes, and they are infinitely adjustable. The ice maker is notoriously fickle, though, and we are currently not on speaking terms. One day it will decide to make ice again and all will be right in the kitchen. It's more moody than I am.

Try to find fresh, not frozen, phyllo. My MIL and I found it much easier to work with.

I'd go to Lyon just because bleudauvergne is there...
I was thinking the exact same thing! I'm eager to see what your final decision is, and look forward to seeing your posts from France throughout your time there. I think many of us will be living vicariously through you.

I was there for a conference last summer and stayed adjacent to Downtown Disney. Antonio's on Sand Lake Rd was the best meal we had. Didn't care for Emeril's place - don't recall the name of it.

I don't think I ever reported back that I bought the Black and Decker and think it does a pretty good job. Which reminds me. I need to make more waffles.

My favorite creamy cole slaw recipe is from the Complete Meat Cookbook. The two of us can eat almost the whole batch in two sittings. There is also one for an Asian Slaw in the How to Cook Everything book that has just a few ingredients and is very good. If you want recipes, pm me.

I really like the idea of scanning in the recipe cards. So much in fact, I think that's my weekend project. I only have a few that my grandmother gave me when I first was living on my own when I asked her how she made this or that. Thanks for giving me a way to remember her.

I made the almond biscotti and the Normandy apple tart today. The biscotti taste great, although I think I should have baked them slightly longer the first bake. The tart is very good. It tastes of pure apple. I used organic no sugar added applesauce and a Macintosh apple. I only needed one to cover the top. I was thinking that it needed more as I was making it, but it doesn't need anything else at all. I used some fig jam that has been hanging around to glaze since I didn't have apple.

Those with minimal sweet teeth are not invited! I was thinking about shortbread. I have a good lemon shortbread recipe. I'll post later what book it's from. Thanks for the suggestion.
