  1. Me too! looks like I'm going to be stuck there for several hours (both ways)
  2. Totally understand. My wife is from Florence and we were excited that there might be real gelato in NYC. This was several years ago, for all I know the person who served us is long gone. It was just so weird to watch him remove the tiny amount, it seemed so cheap. Well this thread is about Grom and after reading about the leveling issue, I'll wonder if we'll bother. It's going to be tough... I know we'll end up there sooner or later.
  3. I would never ever return to Il Laboratorio, sure he let my wife try one flavor. After filling the cup, he precisely removed the equivalent of the taste he had given her. "scoop Nazi" , indeed
  4. My daughter is 3 months old, while it will be awhile, my Italian born wife (we were actually talking about this yesterday) has already mentioned Pastina as a "first food" I'm pretty sure pastina is the offical first food for babies in Italy
  5. Just wanted to let everyone know we had a fantastic time last night at WD50. They worked with my wife to create a tasting menu that worked around what she could and could not eat. Even to the point of changing a dessert. All in all a fantastic 3 hours. We were never rushed and each course was excellent. I am really glad we picked WD50 as our last "Big Night Out" for awhile.
  6. I posted awhile back about my pregnant wife and if it would be possible for me to do the tasting menu and her ala carte to minimize any complications with her pregnancy diet. As we are "running out of time" for at least while (less than 30 days to go) We have a reservation for Thurs. We were told we could not have one do the tasting menu. My wife explained she was preganant and they asked what she could and could not eat (some items seemed to be a rundown from the tasting menu Foie for example) They said they would make substitutions for those items on her courses. Which is great. But I'm still a little anxious and I think she might have been happy choosing going vegetarian ala carte as her meal. I think she may ask again tomorrow when we confirm.
  7. This is all reminding me of an excursion to malta for a few days while in Sicily. What would be the closest train stop for this shop? I may treck over on a Sat. Morning. Kinnie reminds me of the Italian Soda - Chinotto
  8. Thanks! Dryden this is exactly my issue, and was a problem last night a Babbo, I wanted to do the regular tasting menu, but there were just to many items that would make it difficult to adjust. Even though we mentioned she was pregnant, they would not allow her to have the pasta tasting menu, while I had the regular one (the pasta tasting menu had less "problem" foods) We ended up doing the pasta menu. We still have a few more chances for a nice meal and this was the first time I had encountered this problem. With WD50 being so different, I'm afraid the menu might be to difficult to work with. I will call soon and see what they say
  9. This is one place I have wanted to try for awhile. But I have a problem. My wife is 7 months pregnant. (ok that's not a problem) We have been doing a bit more dining out lately I guess it is a way to have some time together before the baby comes. Now on to my problem, most of the places we've been to in the last 7 months have been pretty standard and being pregnant there are a host of things my wife can't/or should not eat. Normally this would not be an issue since you can work around the menu. One of the attractions of WD-50 is how different it is from Gramercy Tavern or Babbo. I really would like to try the tasting menu but am afraid with all the inovative courses, there might be to many things she can't have. I don't want to stress my wife or the staff trying to find out what's in each course. Do they allow a mix of ala carte and tasting menu at the table? Any suggestions on how to handle this? Am I doomed to never go to WD-50 with my wife till next year?
  10. Thanks so much!!! Tony, I tried to lip read you, but man, it's tough when you're talking with a cigarette in your mouth (smile) I'll be on the look out for any change in the captioning status.
  11. I've been looking forward to this show for a long time, have seen all of the cook's tour shows multiple times. I decided to watch no reservations last night (Tivo) Much to my dismay this show is not captioned! I just don't understand how a new series on a major cable channel might not be captioned at this time. I checked the web site, the Iceland episode isn't captioned either. I'm deaf so I'm pretty much locked out of this show. Say what you want about the food network, but they caption everything - Cook's tour included.

    Angon

I'm going to be checking this out ASAP, but have one question. Just what is a "dal Fry" The online menu says ask your waiter. I've seen this dish mentioned several times when discussing Mina.
  13. I don't post much (more of a constant, and I mean constant! lurker), but there is something about starwich that bothers me. (Although I'm sure the food is great) A while back someone (maybe their PR people, It was quite obvious) posted on food related websites (Chowhound and Roadfood and even here I think) with these "hey look what I found, check this out, it's opening in march" messages that seemed planted. In fact on roadfood, the 2 messages about starwich were all that person ever posted . This in itself was a turnoff to me, If you want to send out a press release, that's fine.

    Carl's Steaks

Just went today, figured with the cold weather, a cheesesteak would hit the spot. While it was not bad, I would never go back for a reason other than the food. Apparently their delivery orders are more important than the customers in the store. I got their at 11 on the dot and had to wait close to half an hour for 1 cheesesteak, while they made dozens in front of me and the 2 other guys that were waiting. Each of us who as far as I could see where only ordering 1 steak each. You would think we would move to the head of the line. All I can say is it left a bad feeling. Normally I don't complain about this kind of thing, but it was annoying to watch, one after the other being made, wondering when they would get one of us. If I'd known that ahead of time, I probably would have walked out.
