  1. Actually upon closer inspection, I noticed this near the Center part of the backside. I’m assuming the gasket is supposed to be all one piece.
  2. Oil is about 3/4 full (more towards the max limit than the min). No issues with the gasket that I can see
  3. It arrives just curious how far on the gauge you can get the needle? I can get about half way through the green zone. 99 second vacuum with filler plates. It kind of maxes out after about 30 seconds. Is this normal?
  4. You get use to precise control. I own two Control Freaks. Yes there’s a wide a range of temps that work but there’s a noticeable difference in quality even at the higher temps. This morning I’m making breakfast sausage. I use 300 to caramelize the sugars while cooking the protein. Big difference in flavour than when I use to eyeball it. You kind of get a feel for temps after a while. And for newbies Breville automatically label temperature ranges as your dialing in (very low, low, simmer, medium, medium high, high, seas —- if I recall correctly)
  5. So is the worry about botulism toxins overhyped? I'm iffy about vacuum packing anything left at room temperature for this reason. Even in the fridge, I was reading that it's beeen recorded that some botulism spores can muliply (albeit very slowly); so I'm worried about cheese. Freeezer is a safe bet.
  6. Anyone have any good resources for vacuum sealing shelf stable ingredients? I’m worried about botulism. I think fron what I’ve read, flour, white sugar, baking soda/powder, rice, etc are fine. But I should avoid brown sugar because of its moisture. I’m also wondering about at-home dehydrated fruit.
  7. Excited about this arriving. But just realized I’m running out of kitchen space. The original plan was to have it in the basement but after watching online videos it seems really useful and I’d want it in a more convenient place.
  8. I've had my eyes on one of these to upgrade my Barista Express. Have yet to find it at a good price. I was saving Air Miles for it, as they had it on for a good deal, but by the time I collected enough emails, it was no longer available
  9. The American version is 1800 watts and has a 15 amp plug... so I'm thinking it's just overkill Canadian standards. Looks like they got over them though, as Canada is getting a 15 amp plug model according to TesTek, that's why they are clearing out their old stock. My model is currently plugged into a 20amp outlet, but I had it in a 15 amp outlet for a couple months in BC, and had no problem with it tripping the breaker.
  10. Just purchased a Vacmaster VP215. Should be arriving next week. Excited to play with it.
  11. One thing to note, TesTek recommends that you only run "medium" intensity if you are using the adapter, as the adapter itself pulls some extra wattage and could trip the breaker. The unit it's self won't go over 1800watts which a 15 amp outlet can handle... but the addition of the adapter could cause problems. I believe Canada is getting a standard 15 amp Control Freak hence the reason why they are trying to clear out these units.
  12. Yes. I think TesTek supplies an adapter. Luckily my kitchen has 20amp outlets. I think it's pretty standard in Alberta kitchens.. at least new builds.
  13. So this is the cheapest I've seen a new unit (other than my eBay deals, which I'm pretty sure were brand new too). Buy 1 for $1500CAD or two for $1325 CAD each. That's $1,123.97 USD each when you buy one, or $992.84 USD each when you buy two. Might be worth buying together with someone. I'm even tempted to get a third one at this price, but don't have the counter space, lol. Note this is the original Canadian version, that requires a 20amp outlet/circuit. https://www.testek.ca/en/cooking-equipment/induction-cookers/control-freaktm-induction-cooker-from-breville-polyscience.htm
  14. Picked and devoured. Delicious. Day 89.
  15. I can offer the update file to anyone who wants it. But I highly recommend double checking your model number. Not sure what would happen if you tried to install it if you have a different model (there appears to be a few different ones, mostly based on region).
  16. I’m a teacher. So my career direction and salary is pretty much predefined by a collective agreement. I agree that I should get something that I could see myself living in even with a major change in my lifestyle (getting married, having a child - unlikely, etc). Plan on putting no less than 20% down, so I will be limited in my choices.
  17. My apologies if this in the wrong forum. I took a quick glance and this seemed the most relevant. If I’m mistaken, no hard feelings if it gets moved. In about a year, I will begin my serious quest of buying my first home. I’m pretty excited as I’ve rented all my life, but I’ve finally saved up enough for a downpayment and my career is going in the right direction. I’m a single guy, so I don’t need a ton of space. I teach, so 2 bedrooms would be nice for a home office or if my situation ever changes. The most important room, by far, is the kitchen. Which had led me to ponder what exactly do I want. After some consideration I know I want considerable counter space, storage options (doesn’t all have to be in the kitchen, but it’s for kitchenware), an accessible pantry, and a large sink (could be installed later). A dedicated dining area would be nice as well (currently it’s like an after thought at my house). Would be nice to have a sleek stove and fridge, but those are easy enough to upgrade later. What’s more important is the space. Not sure if I’ll find everything I’m looking for in a house not meant for a large family 😆 So my question to everyone is if you were in my situation, what would be your top kitchen criteria? What is non negotiatble, and what could you settle with?
  18. I got my update from Breville USA as I have an American model. Used the site chat. Finished in about 5 minutes. I think the only difference is it does not erase preexisting programs when copying new programs over. Only a concern if you have 2+ units or getting programs from others.
  19. I've created a "Projects" category in the main menu now. In it you will find "Precision Cooking", underneath the "Cooking Glossary"
  20. You mean: http://www.sizzleandsear.com/precisioncooking ? I don't have a navigation link to it from the rest of the site. The rest of the site is really a work in progress, and more of a personal project. But I could add a link.
  21. Added smoke points to the website for easy reference. Sortable by temperature. Will slowly plug away at other temps.
  22. Day 82: Tomatoes finally starting to yellow. Bigger than I expected. Comparable to cherry tomatoes I find in the grocery store.
  23. I’ll start filling out that table on the website tonight with my various temps. Let me know if anyone else has some temps that could be added. I think adding pics will be helpful as I’m sure that there isn’t consensus on the perfect temp for a pancake. A visual for 3 different temps could be helpful. Let me know if anything else would be useful. I could also link to pages with full recipes.
  24. Any chance it could be hacked so that after 10 minutes at one temperature it switches to another? You can currently set it to “keep warm” (forget the exact temp 140f?) after a set amount of time, but it would be nice to be able to have more control.
