  1. Try the Brick Pit.

    For me, the best BBQ place in Mobile. That is, if you're not like the herds who seem to prefer sweet, gloopy sauces. They are open for lunch and dinner.

    Southern food wise, I would recommend Queen G's Cafe. Make sure to get the sweet tea with mint! They are only open for lunch.

    I would second the recommendation for the Original Oyster House ... lunch is a really good deal, the steamed platter is about $10 and is basically an piled plate of steamed seafood. Open for lunch and dinner, but tends to get crowded.

    Wintzell has happy hour (M-F, 4-7 pm) oysters at half price (used to be 25 cents each).

    I have lived here for almost 3 years, and while it's not a culinary hotspot by any means, I feel that the food here is generally cooked better compared to many other places I've been to. Even in places like the Olive Garden. Many hidden gems too, if you stay here long enough.

    With the OP only staying for 24 hours I didn't want to recommend more than 3 places though.

  2. I've read through 20 pages of post titles with nothing similar popping up, so I thought I would post this on my sister's behalf.

    Any ideas for someone who :wub: good food? Pretty please?

    I have to organize a Christmas party for my company. These are the requirements:

    Date - Friday, 14 Dec 07

    Time - 6-7pm

    Number - 30 people

    Budget - $100 per person (including tax/tip so approx US$80 per person excluding). Can go slightly higher if the food is worth it. Hopefully, alcohol is included too (most ppl in the group don't drink anyway so we won't need too much alcohol)

    Cuisine - anything non-Chinese (asian fusion is okay) and FABULOUS of course.

    Location - anywhere in Manhattan. Ambience is secondary to good food.

  3. Don't know if this helps but ...

    My uncle made them for me when I visited him a while ago in NYC, I have no idea what he used to make the filling, but the skin was made with phyllo dough IIRC. Baked in the oven and it was yummy. I have a bad picture of what they looked like before they got baked.


    He made a second batch the next day which turned out even better. Maybe the filling had a chance to settle overnight.

    Edit to say that I think deep fried ones taste better but these were not too bad (and healthier too)

  4. My parents sent some boxed mixes up from Singapore, together with all the Chinese New Year goodies.

    The brand is Prima Taste and I haven't been able to find them here anywhere.

    I tried making the rendang and it was so easy! You just follow the directions and in an hour (or less) you have perfect rendang.

    It tastes gooood, better than that, it tastes accurate. Oops ... make that authentic. To my uneducated tastebuds that is.

    They have a bunch of other dishes as well. So far I've tried laksa and mee rebus as well. They have all been a big boost to someone that misses the food from back home.

    I'll try and post pictures of the other dishes if I manage to get to them before the plates get licked clean.

  5. Ah, progress.  But the Tripple XXX has been there since my father went to Purdue in the forties.  I think it still stands by sheer force of grease.

    Time to push the Hoosiers off this thread. :biggrin:

    There has been an influx of new places in the past couple years, Scotty's Brewhouse down in the Levee to name but one. A new Korean place (Bea One) opened up about a year ago just across the bridge.

    Oh and a new Thai place just opened in Chauncey. Have always wanted to try it but haven't found the time so far.

    There's lots of places to go to actually. IMO the dining scene has improved alot compared to when I first came here 5 years ago.

    Of course Triple XXX is always the good 'ol standby.

  6. I'm a international student just into my 6th year in the US ... orginally from Singapore.

    When I first came here it was American food and portions all the way, and of course I missed the food back home. It just seemed cheaper and easier to eat the food that was most widely available.

    However as the years went by I've started to put more and more effort into recreating what I can get back home, be it char siew (roast pork) or a simple dish of sweet and sour pork. And with each bite I remember a little slice of home.

    Of course it helped that I had awesome food throughout the entirety of my childhood. :biggrin:

    So, for me at least I think my memories are guiding me back to where I came from.

It sounds like you may be talking about what's called "Sweet Soy Sauce" here.  Really thick like syrup (you have to shake the bottle hard to pour some out).  And it is sweet and not too salty.  I have a bottle of ABC Sweet Soy Sauce at home that fits your description.  And they carry it at Asiafoods.com. 

    See if this is what you are looking for.  $2.89 online order.  Not bad.

    The brand that I have now has an picture of an elephant on it, and another brand that I remember has a tiger instead.

    I've always known it as dark soy sauce, and I think I know what the sweet ones are, but that's not it ... maybe I should just try a couple of your suggestions and see what i can find.

  8. Are you by any chance talking about kecap manis?  This website sells it.  I'm sure Froogle will yield more hits.

    No, that I can find. I was refering what we call dark soy sauce back home ... The ones on sale in the US are thin and feel almost like regular soy sauce to me.

    It's really thick and not as salty as light soy sauce.

  9. Whew, finally activated my account ... guess I've been lurking for too long. :biggrin:

    So I've been using up the dark soy sauce (the one that's really thick, almost like molasses) I brought back from Singapore at a torrid rate, and being located in Indiana for now I haven't been able to find anything that is similar to it.

    Have been searching online and have turned up nothing so far, even on the big websites like ethnicgrocer etc.

    I'm sure I would be able to find it in a big metropolitan area but there's no such thing in Indiana.

    Would be nice to find a ready supply in the US so I can go back to cooking my braised dishes and char siew with abandon ...
