If you order off the menu, all things are freshly made once you order so it might taste better. Things on the sunday brunch are also freshly made, but sometimes they have been in the tray for a few minutes already, just like any other buffet you would visit. We strive to keep the quality of the brunch at a high level, but there are a lot a limitations since there is no possible way for us to keep the food at just-out-of-the-wok fresh. Another limitation is the price, we would love to be able to put all the things we offer on our regular menu in the buffet, but at $11.95 per person, this is just not possible. So if the buffet dissapoints you, try ordering off our menu next time. Thanks --Cecil

Yes, for example, the Lion Dancers are there for the whole restaurant, not just us. And, C46 has a special Chinese New Year menu available, that is not the same as our menu. I believe you can order off the regular menu as well. In the past, friends with small children (they are welcome, but most parents haven't wanted to impose their kids on a bunch of "strangers") or eG members with special diets have chosen to come the night of the event, but sit at their own table and order their own food. This way, you can say hi, meet some people, etc., but have control over your own menu. It's very hard to create a banquet menu for a large group that will please everyone. The Lion Dancers perform between 7 and 8 PM, so I'd recommend making your reservation for around 6:30, if you're not planning a 3 hour banquet! What has become an annual Chinese New Year dinner at China 46 is now also a fundraiser for The eGullet Society. So we hope you choose to make a donation, even if you don't plan on attending the official event. Click here for info on where a lot of the money we raise goes. ← Yes we do have a menu for Chinese New Year and yes you can order off the regular menu. I have attaced the New Year menu for those who are interested. --Cecil

The red vegetabe is called meashi (something like that...hard to translate over to English). Yes it is seasonal (around May/June). It is cooked with garlic and for a longer time then most other vegetables. It is a popular dish in the Shanghai region. Also, we now can buy sichuan peppercorn oil, and it is quite good (an it is also original from Hanyuan, Sichuan)...it tastes exactly like the pepercorns we used to have. Unfortunately, there is no English on the bottle (the bottle is about 5-6oz and around $2 per bottle) so i cannot tell you the name of it so you guys can go out and buy it yourselves, so i will try to take a pic of it and post it here...but connie, my wife, took the digital camera from me so she could take pics in Shanghai...so it might be a week or two before i get a pic up...but if anyone feels like coming over i'll gladly show you the bottle and where to buy it.

zongzi, yes they are seasonal...in Shanghai (some other providences eat them year-round) As a matter of fact tomorrow (May 5th for lunar calendar) is the holiday to eat zongzi. (Holiday name is pronounced kind of like Duan-Woo) It is a day to remember a Chinese poet (name is pronounced kind of like Chue-Yuan), who was also a very political figure in the government. Unfortunately, though, a few government officials from the rival party tried to make things difficult for him, which eventually led him to commit suicide by jumping into a river. Since the community liked him very much, the local people immediately threw food into the river, as a symbol of giving food to him, but the fish in the river would eat the food right away. So they thought of a way to prevent the fish from eating the food, and thus they took lotus leaf and wrapped it around rice and other ingredients…leading to the zongzi. Ok now the main reason why I wanted to post here..... *inserting plug* China 46 has a lot of zongzi for tomorrow's holiday so why won't everyone come on down to China 46 and have a zongzi to celebrate the holiday and remember Chue-Yuan
  6. Hi this is Cecil from China 46. Our Shanghai Stir Fry noodles are like those thick and hearty noodles you are talking about. Most of our noodes in soup are thin noodles (not very thin but thin compared to the Shanghai Stir Fry). Our Thin Noodle with Chicken is the thinest, it is like angel-hair noodles. Besides these noodles we also have Chow Fun noodles which are wide and flat noodles that are made out of rice. Our Shi Zi Tou -- Lions Head Meatballs used to be a special, but now it is available everyday. Looking foreward to see you, ______ Cecil
