  1. I got about 4 or 5 Cuisinart pans from Amazon a couple of years ago - saute and stock pots. I love them. They have aluminum disks in the bottom which are great for even heating. I especially love the 12" saute pan - I do a lot of pan roasted things that go from the stovetop to the oven - just don't be stupid like me and forget to use hot pads when you take them out of the oven

  2. We had Take 5's and caramel Kisses

We dried some more chiles in the dehydrator - MUST REMEMBER TO WEAR GLOVES WHEN PULLING OFF THE STEMS - caused much embarassment later

The funniest little trick or treater pulled a Dum-Dum out of her bag and put it in my handing-out-candy basket. Guess she's picky.

  3. I base mine on the recipe from "the red book" - Betty Crocker, circa 1982 or so (?)...simple, basic, buttery and good. Except I up the butter quotient to a full stick or more and use fresh sage instead of dried. Also put in Jimmy Dean's sage sausage. The old Betty Crocker cookbook is my go-to for simple and good recipes - Caesar salad, steak Diane, cookies, pancakes.

  4. Susan in FL - Amazing photos. You should work for Gourmet magazine!

Friday night we had take & bake pizza from Safeway. Too much sauce. Blech.

Saturday we picked all the chiles that were left in garden and pulled up all the plants. They were calling for a freeze warning. Today it is sunny and 72 degrees. I had some leftover pan roasted chicken breast which I sliced thin and put on TJ's Tuscan bread with provolone and the rest of the yummy sauce from the chicken (prosciutto garlic white wine chicken stock). Nuked them. I was tired from all that chile picking and that was as good as it was going to get.

Yesterday I made Ina Garten's turkey sausage lasagna but omitted the goat cheese because I don't like it AND I don't think it belongs in lasagna. Hrumph. Also made my mom's garlic bread, which is sliced white bread drowned in butter to which a copious quantity of garlic salt ( ) is added.

Edited to add: I've just been looking at all the new pictures upthread and I must say that you ALL should work for Gourmet!!! Outstanding.

  5. I've made and given the Union Square spiced nuts many times over the years. They are always well received.

Last year everyone in the Basilman's family got panetonne from Trader Joe's.

I've also made and given pepperoni bread and spicy olives, that went over well with my sister but not with my brother (not an olive fan - who knew?).

This year we have many, many dried peppers from the garden that we will be packaging up and giving away.

I've done Neuske's a few times, but it can get pricy.

This year I'm giving my bosses Graber's olives, which remind them of playing golf at Augusta.

  6. That just made my day

I was eating a late dinner of leftovers, and reading about my new camera until I couldn't hold my eyes open any longer.
Tired, hungry, not up to cooking dinner. Sauteed some pancetta, fried some eggs in the fat with butter  , put pancetta on top of eggs, fresh mozzarella on top of pancetta. Served on buttered toasted Ray's bagels. In bed (asleep) by 9:10 p.m.

Mmm-mmmm... Gotta do that for brunch some day. Your creations give me great ideas. Thanks once again.

  7. Pan roasted chicken breast chunks with prosciutto, garlic and fresh rosemary, chicken stock & wine sauce

Trader Joe's Tuscan style bread brushed with olive oil and broiled, to soak up the sauce

Romaine, celery and Honeycrisp apple salad with blue cheese dressing

    Sauvignon Blanc

    and early to bed again!!!!

  9. Didn't feel like cooking, so we had goats milk gouda, fontina, Genoa salami, sun-dried tomato stuffed olives, Boursin, La Brea pan rustique. Oh, and some of the tapenade my boss mailed me from Provence. Sauvignon Blanc. Reese's peanut butter cup ice cream for dessert.

  10. I made red beans and rice from scratch for the first time, and cornbread from a mix. I used a whole box of rice which will keep the Basilman in leftover heaven for the week. The cornbread mix was George Washington buttermilk brand, and it really does taste like homemade. No sugar.

  11. Barilla tortelloni with jarred portabella and white wine alfredo sauce. I sauteed some onion and garlic and threw in some fresh sage, dumped in the sauce with a little white wine and pieces of pork loin that had been cooked in the Set It and Forget It with Tuscan herb salt. Topped with chopped scallions. Cheap chardonnay.

  12. Steak and eggs with Tilamook cheddar melted on top, served on buttery toasted English muffins with Chipotle Tabasco. The Basilman ate five (5)... Then he had some NutterButters with lots of milk.

Edited to add this should have been in the Dinner thread

  14. I think lamb tastes like sweaters

I hope you mean lamb tastes like sweaters smell?

    SB

Yeah. Like wool (lanolin like Carswell said upthread). My sister really digs lamb, though, especially Indian style. The thought of eating a sweater makes my teeth hurt, like fingernails on a blackboard. Or chewing foil.

  15. Friday night: Milena's Take and Bake pepperoni pizza from Safeway. Not bad for $6.00 (Friday price). I doctored it up with S&P, red pepper flakes and oregano.

Saturday: Dead tired from a horrendous plumbing problem. Popeye's fried chicken, 2-piece spicy white meat and a 4-piece combo with red beans and rice and a large order of fries. I love Popeye's. I hate plumbing.

Sunday: New York strips on the grill pan, Montreal steak seasoning. The Basilman sliced thin and piled his on a big sub roll and mine on a toasted English muffin with eed onions sauteed on the grill pan in the steak grease with chipotle Tabasco and Marie's extra chunky blue cheese dressing. Oven baked French fries sprinkled with lots of popcorn salt. Yum.

  16. The Mountain View Diner in Charles Town is okay--near the intersection of US 340 and Rte 9. They don't sell crafts though. I have not seen or heard of this John's Diner, but I will look for it. Where on Route 9 is it?

Um, I thought it was at the intersection of 340 & Route 9...or it used to be. Guess they changed the name/ownership

  17. Biba Caggiano's white bean soup - I added fresh rosemary and sage, a little hot pepper flakes & red wine vinegar

Homemade foccacia with rosemary, sea salt & garlic slivers from No Need to Knead

  18. Was going to make pan roasted chicken, was going to make Set It and Forget It pork roast with sage-rosemary-garlic-olive oil paste. Ate a lot of Kettle Chips salt & pepper chips (really good) and olive cream cheese on crackers while hoisting a few Sierra Nevadas during the Redskins-Seattle game. Dinner plans went out the window. Settled for pop-eyes (what the Basilman calls egg in a holes) with prosciutto and a three cheese blend, lots of butter. Mmmm.

  19. Trader Joe's pizza dough

One with lots of garlic puree spread on the crust, sauteed onions, anchovies on the Basilman's half, fontina, provolone, kasseri, a little hot chile

One with doctored up canned diced tomatoes, sauteed onions and red peppers, salami, roasted garlic "Bistro Blend" cheese

Big Mamma's red wine = big hangover this a.m.

  20. A big green salad with Genoa, ham, red peppers, cheese, really good dressing my sister brings me from Florida ("Sauce for Salade")

Toasted potato rolls with my mom's garlic butter (lots of garlic salt  , lots of butter)
