  1. Several weeks ago we had a very nice meal- food, service, wine- at Nancy Longo's Pierpoint. I had been several times years ago when just opened and it was the top place to dine. We were the only diners in the restaurant this Thursday evening. That did not bother me- in fact it was lovely as we had very gracious undivided attention of our great wait staff and the chef. I will go back but wondered --and am curious-- if everyone knows something I don't know?

  5. Early December, looking for recommendations of tasty sites--either near Convention Center/ Marriott or a short cab ride -- possible 3 nights of dining. From Philadelphia.
  6. Coming from Philadelphia... a city with great dining...... what is difference of Cafe Campagne and Campagne....can see they are 2 places..... which do you recommend?

  9. Any one want to comment on dinner at Farmicia in Old City?
  10. No, not a crummy hotel....no, not a bad location Are you meeting or picking up your niece at Penn? If so...someone is going to have to cab it to some place and I think the $10 price (with tip) for a cab to University City is top price....... maybe less...it is a very short walk as mentioned before but for dinner and 3 females ....you will not be walking..but not a long cab ride Many of the restaurants I mentioned are on the higher end for an "inexpensive meal".... but so often that bill gets high because of all the bottles of wine etc.. so if only one wine drinker in the crowd.??!! Nan...you can do well at low cost...you will have to bring your own wine Penne ...you can do well...hey the homemade pasta plates are $10-12 Zocalo... again....not your high end place...Meixcan... and I bet you would like to share appetizers so everyone can taste more.... just my thoughts...
  11. There are great places If you want to be in Univ city near Penn try The White Dog http://www.whitedog.com/ Penne http://www.theinnatpenn.com/penne.html Nan (382-0818, 4000 Chestnut) Thai. Yum. BYOB. Zocalo… more causal… http://www.ucnet.com/zocalo/ Pod (387-1803, Sansom and 36th.)..very very hip... a quote"The only restaurant in Philadelphia to make Wired magazine. Cool lighting and cool food. " http://www.podrestaurant.citysearch.com/ La Terrasse (386-5000, 3432 Sansom St.) French. Casual but elegant dining room terraces offer interesting French/American fare. A more relaxed atmosphere can be found in bar & café. Cuisine: French, Continental, American Address: 3432 Sansom Street Philadelphia, PA 19104 Cross Street: Between 34th and 36th Streets University City Phone Number: (215) 386-5000 * Rx (222-9590, 4443 Spruce St) Relaxed, yet very nice atmosphere. Excellent food, almost as good as Salt. Best thing to happen to West Philadelphia in a long time. BYOB. While I don’t agree with every word…this is a very helpful list of restaurants with comments http://www.cis.upenn.edu/~ungar/restaurants.html If you want to have a “real” philly experience and eat Philly cheesesteaks….go to either Pat’s or Geno’s…they are across the road from each other…of course you will eat standing up ….outside…. year round…under cover and with heaters if needed http://www.patskingofsteaks.com/ http://www.genosteaks.com/ GENO'S STEAKS 9th and Passyunk South Philly The best are at Geno's. Maybe its because they stay open so late. After a night of boozing nothing tastes better than a Geno's provolone and onions cheesesteak. Jim's also has some very good ones. I grew up in Philly and now live in Omaha, Nebraska for over 15 years. I still say that Geno's on 9th St. in Philly has the best sandwich and fries. Omaha has lots of beef, but no one can match Geno's.... Boy do I miss those sandwiches.... GENOs steaks are the BEST. I grew up in Philly and ate Geno's cheese steaks almost every night. I live in VA and really miss Geno's there is no other place like it. #1(tie) When you're in South Philly, and yes if you're checking out a game at the Vet you're in South Philly. You have to have a steak at Geno's!! The meat is cut thick, the cheese is always fresh, the rolls are perfecto. One thing... You gotta order it right or it's like the Soup Nazi, "no soup for you!" Order it like this.... Your cheese (Provolone, American, Whiz (cheez whiz) and with or without (onions) and you can get sauce with it as well. For example: "Provolone without" Provolone cheese steak without onions. Important note: It's open late. You're on Delaware AV clubbing you have to hit Geno's. Submitted by Mike Cunningham (hamradio@geocities.com), who I've dubbed the Cheesteak Guru! Sept. 21, 1996 ------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Eggs

To a recent posting someone mentioned": In terms of eggs, the wives' tale says use the older (stale, perhaps, but not expired) ones in your fridge. Eggs that lay down, veddy fresh. Eggs that list to one side or stand on end, older. Eggs that float--treat 'em like fish. I have always been so pleased to use VERY fresh eggs for baking and cooking. So fresh that I sit at the local dairy farmer's kitchen table as their son goes out to the old chicken coop to get my eggs.... $1.00/doz for these very large beautiful brown eggs. Am I wrong using such fresh eggs? Would I be better to bake or cook with less fresh eggs? Yes, I do use old ones if I am going to hard boil them.
  14. Traveling to downtown (Uptown) Charlotte, North Carolina next month and looking for recommendations for outstanding food and wine..... need not be fancy (though that is okay), but must be good... C
