  1. John, in the last digest you wrote: " the team from De la Garde is moving to Beauvilliers in the 18th" Do you know if the Chef has left yet? Would you go?

Thanks very much for the suggestions. I've actually been to both Bofinger and Chez Janou (which is great in the summer) a few times and want to try something new this time. Hmmm, it's a difficult decision, but I think I might lean towards La Repaire as it is more "French". Plus I have a cookbook called "Qu'est-ce qu'on mange ce soir" and Rodolphe Paquin, the chef of La Repaire, is one of the authors, so it would be nice to try.

I was looking through this thread for options because I have a friend who will be in town on Thursday night and he's staying in the Marais. Since he's only here for the night I wanted to stay close to that area. I've always wanted to try both La Repaire de Cartouche and Le Dome du Marais so I leaning towards these. Any thoughts? He asked for something "terribly French" if that's a help. Merci!
  4. There's a funny article in the November 29 New Yorker (p.62) about raw milk. Apparently it's being sold on the black market in NY as part of the raw food craze. People believe it's a "milk cure" for all sorts of aliments.
  5. Malawry, You might want to ask at a Pharmacy, they might have something they recommend. I know some Pharmacys have special water for various problems.
  6. Unfortunately, my “to-do” list of restaurants is a lot longer than the ones I’ve actually tried as my budget doesn’t allow me to eat out as often as I would like. And like Raisab I have a long list of restaurants that I’d like to try that don’t fall into the “new”category. Here are the newer restaurants that I have tried this year and liked, but in no particular order really. Les Papilles (a few times, since it’s close by) Chiberta L'Ourcine Mon Vieil Ami La Bistro Lauriston Café Constant L’Entredgeu Frugier And here are a few that I would like to try in the near future (and that I can realistically afford) La Cerisaie Le Temps au Temps (I tried to go last week, but they were closed for the holidays) Le Regalade, (again, since Ive been when Yves Camdeborde has the Chef) Les Vivres (I think that’s the name anyway) L’ Ami Marcel L’Ami Jean De La Garde Pinxo I’m sure there are others And the not-so-new places I’ve been to this year and enjoyed. Again, this is just off the top of my head and in no sort of order. L’Astrance Aux Lyonnaise La Beurre Noisette Chez Michel Le Clos des Gourmets Les Bouquinistes Le Troquet Café des Delice Le Timbre La Famille Numerous Japanese Le Pre Verre Le Petit Pointoise La Cremerie Wine Bar Azabu Bistro du Dome La Villaret C’Amelot La Cave L'Os à Moelle Pasta Linea—a delicious Italien Epicerie in the Marais that has a few tables. Fish (at least twice a month, if not more, because it’s in my neighborhood)
  7. I ended up buying Lait Ribot, which I found at the Bon Marché along with all of the other ingredients needed like baking powder and baking soda. They turned out beautifully.
  8. Thanks so much to everyone. I will definitely look for this in my supermarket tonight. I've never noticed it before, but haven't been looking.
  9. After reading all of the favorable reviews, I recommended the bistro Lauriston to my co-worker and he liked it so much he decided to forgo the bistro in the 8th in order to return to the bistro Lauriston a second time. Many thanks again for all of the recommendations.
  10. Fresh_A, what do you think of the whole "fooding" thing?
  11. Does anyone have an idea of what I might use in place of buttermilk? I'd like to make pancakes this weekend. Merci!
  12. Some things I like, some I don’t, I guess. I really think the events they have are great. They make food fun and accessible to everyone; however being accessible to everyone tends to make them unbearably crowded as well. I also really like their guides and buy them every year. They put out a magazine a few months ago, which I didn’t like at all, but I haven’t seen it since. And the dictionary they just put out sounds a bit silly, but I haven’t actually seen it. There was a program a few weeks ago on Gourmet TV, which had several well known food critics giving their “finds” for the year. The guy from Nova, who was one of the creators of the term “fooding” was there, and he was definitely criticized by the others. They weren’t so upset about the concept, as they were about the fact that they choose to use an English sounding word. I think the more food events, the better.
  13. Oh, sorry if these were already posted here. I must have missed it. I think the awards were announced on the 6th of December and there was an article listing the winners in this week's A Nous Paris.
  14. Here are the "Fooding" awards for 2004 Meilleur Bistronomique Mon Vieil Ami ** Meilleure Cave à Manger Les Papilles ** Meilleure Popote Minute Les Vivres, which is described as épicerie-garde-manger, a place where you can either eat in or order to take home with you. They also have wine, cookbooks, and other fresh products. 28 rue Petrelle, 9eme. Metro: Anvers. Open Tuesday-Saturday from 10h30 to 21h. Service from 11-19h and until 21h30 on Fridays. ** Fooding du Public Ourcine There was a quiz on the fooding website a few months back and 25 winners became food critics for this event. They were to choose their favorites between Mon Vieil ami, Les Vivres, Les papilles and L' Oursine. And Oursine came out the favorite. ** Meilleur Interieur Jour The cusine seems to be French with a Japanese touch. Ploum 20 rue Alibert, 10th. Metro Goncourt. Open Tuesday-Saturday. 12h-14h30 and from 19h-22h30. Tel: 01 42 00 11 90 ** Fooding D' Honneur Les Ambassadeurs au Crillon
  15. I just walked by this shop last night. It's on the corner of Turbigo and Etienne Marcel, right near the metro entrance I believe.
  16. Many thanks for all of the suggestions. It's actually not for me, but for someone I work with. I have given him the suggestions and will let you know if he tries any of them.
  17. Any suggestions for a bistro in the 8th, near George V? I can't seem to find anything in any of my guides. Merci!
  18. I went to L’Atelier des Chefs during my lunch break two weeks ago and loved it. I wouldn’t say it’s for accomplished cooks really, as you prepare a whole meal in about 25 minutes, but I enjoyed it immensely nonetheless. We made veal saltimbocca, sautéed baby articokes, and sautéed potatoes. Afterwards everyone sits together family style and eats. You can then order dessert, wine, coffee, etc to go with the meal.
  19. I agree, even my local Champion supermarket sells stockings (as opposed to pantyhose) so I think they must be pretty popular.
  20. Thanks to Pierre I went to Restaurant Frugier yesterday for lunch and enjoyed it very much. The décor is simple, without being plain. A sort of smart, slightly modern bistro. The menu, which is written up on a black-board, was either 24€ for an entrée, plat, or 29€ for entrée, plat, dessert. There are also a few items which have a supplement, making the price a bit higher. I started with a lightly fried tempura de crevettes et encornets (calamari) with what I think was a remolade sauce. This was followed by scallops from Saint Malo with a lemon butter. The scallops surrounded a bed of what I thought was a sort of soft black rice. Unfortunately, I forgot to ask what it was but it was delicious. Dessert was a very good warm chocolate cake. My dining partner had a crab salade over a concassee of articokes with travers de cochon aux poives (spare ribs) and enjoyed both very much. It was definitely worth going to if you are in the area. Restaurant Frugier 137 avenue de Versailles 75016
  21. Thank you so much for all of the suggestions. My boss has already been to La Gare, and so I have made us a reservation at Le Frugier and will let you know how it was. The others were new to me as well, so I will keep them in mind for another time.
  22. My boss has just sent me the following email request: can you come up with a fun/tasty resto a reasonable distance from here for our lunch on Thursday Our office is in the 16th, between La Muette and the RER station Henri Martin. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm not so sure about our price range, but I would say not too expensive. So, Astrance and La Table de Robuchon are out. Off the top of my head I was thinking Natachef. Does anyone have any ideas. Merci!
  23. Here's is an amusing article from the NY Times which compares American and French eating habits. Not sure if this link will work, as you need to sign in , but if not you can find it in the magazine section. Our National Eating Disorder
  24. ______________________________________________ I was always surprised that this little wine bar in the 6th hasn't received much press. Well they were just written up in both the Figaroscope and Zurban this week. They only seat about 10-12 and I've never had a problem getting a table before... I guess that's about to change. Here's the figaroscope article: Figaroscope
  25. I stopped by La Derniere Goute last night and was told that they are going to be holding tastings with the wine maker every Saturday in Oct, Nov, and Dec--and they're free. The first one starts this Sat, 9 October with Domaine la Colombette (D'OC and Coteaux du Libron) & Domaine Piquemal (Cotes du Roussillon). The tastings are informal and are held from (roughly) from 11h-13h30 and 16h-19h30. On the 16th October it will be Chateau Sainte-Anne from Bandol. 23 October--Domaine la Soufrandise (Pouilly-Fuissé) I will list the rest if anyone is interested as I have the list through Dec.
