  1. I recently had 2 fantastic huitlacoche dishes at Suenos -- one soft taco and the other a enchilada style concoction. I indulged in the chili tasting menu, with only one coarse substitution to keep it non-"meat"-- I highly highly recommend it. Now that I think about it, and not surprisingly, I remember having a couple of well prepared huitlacoche dishes at Rocking Horse Cafe over the years -- the most memorable being a tamale.

    @SQC (Closed)

    You're description makes me want to give @SQC a secnod chance. My first time was a very disappointing brunch experience -- miniscule portions that cost far too much (the hot chocolate was fantastic ... but didn't quite make up for leaving hungry and empty pocketed). I do really like their sister restaurant "Avenue" a little further up on Columbus, so maybe it was just a singular bad meal. Thanks!
  3. Yikes -- that sounds horrible. I've never been but I had read some good things about their food and my cousin requested Greek. I'd prefer Pelagos on the UWS but that's significantly further away from the Javits Center. Is there a different Greek restaurant you'd recommend in the area? I went to Gus's Figs Bistro a while ago but didn't think it was all that spectacular.
  4. Thanks for the help -- we've resigned ourselves to the fact that a cab will need to be involved so I think we're going to go to Uncle Nick's for Greek at 50th and 9th Ave.
  5. My cousin will be in town next week for a dental show at the Javits Center and wants to meet up for lunch someplace nearby (if possible).... we'd like someplace in the >$30 range for food and perferably italian or american/new american. Any ideas? I saw a thread on this topic from 2001 but there were no useful suggestions -- perhaps that's changed in the past 2 years (though I'm not holding my breath). Thanks!

    Bolo

    Is Bolo's $20 lunch available on weekends too -- or only Monday - Friday? Thanks

    Capsouto Freres

    I've been to Capsuto Freres for dessert only (their fabulous souflees) but I've heard they also do a great job with dinner. I'm trying to help my friend by suggesting a romantic, unique place to take a friend for his birthday, but it's a challenge. They both love eat and the friend always knows the best hidden secret local places to get a wonderful off-beat meal -- it's difficult to come up with something that will surprise and please him. Anyway -- I thought of Capsuto Freres because I remember it being fairly intimate, out of the way, romantic ... and not hugely trendy or crowded. Does anyone have an experiences they can share -- positive or negative -- that might help me in deciding whether to recommend it or not? (other suggestions welcome as well). Thanks! clg
  8. I don't eat steak so I can't comment -- but I did have a fanastically prepared cut of pepper-crusted tuna at Cite many months ago. What's all this about all-you-can-drink wine? ... that certainly wasn't the case the night I ate there (and PAYING for wine at Cite can get quite expensive, quite quickly)

    THE BEST: Fries

    Spicy fries at The Red Cat or The Harrison (same owners) with huge shavings of fresh parmesan on top, or plain crisp fries at Mermaid Inn (also same owners). Also, there are awesome fries at Westville on west 4th.

    Thanksgiving Sides

    I'm a vegetarian and so have to rely on the side dishes to satisfy. Two favorite sides I often bring along wherever I may be enjoying TG (not including my favorite squash preparations, which you seem to have covered) Roasted cauliflower with coriander and cumin seeds ... I add some chopped red pepper to this for color and to help distinguish it from the mashed potatoes. Broccoli with wild mushrooms
  11. I had a very romantic meal at Aureole about a year ago ...
