    Guinness Extra Cold

I believe Budweiser varies its brewing process at each one of its breweries in order to eliminate the differences caused by different water sources so that its beer will taste the same all over the country.
  2. Paul, its 26 years since I moved back to NYC from Bernardsville, so my memory may have faded, but weren't the Minuteman in Harding and the Buxton's in Bernardsville one and the same restaurant at different times, located on Route 202?
  3. Since we are talking about New Jersey, would a bowling team jacket do? I seem to remember they used to be de rigueur at the Edison Diner.
  4. Right now I'm munching on organic dates that taste like the best custard and Kalmata figs from Greece while listening to S'Wonderful, a Verve compilation of many of my favorite singers doing Gershwin. Next it'll be Anita O'Day singing Cole Porter.
  5. How the hell should I know what we're eating tomorrow? We're going to a non-gulleteer's open house. They'll probably serve aerosol Velveeta sprayed on Ritz crackers.
  6. Its time we did some cross-referencing. Please see my post on the restaurant Yeah Shanghai Deluxe.
  7. Couldn't get into New Green Bo tonight so the three of us went directly across Bayard Street to Yeah Shanghai Deluxe. The unanimous verdict was that the crowds of tourists can have New Green Bo to themselves from now on. Steamed vegetable dumplings were pronounced "the best I've ever had" by Sandy. The scallops, served with crispy yellow leeks were extremely fresh and tender. The fish fried in seaweed was in a somewhat thicker batter than that of Say En Look of blessed memory but not one had any sogginess or lack of firmness on the outside yet all had fish in the center that rivalled the scallops for freshness and tenderness. The half of a roast chicken Northern China style was a revelation. The chicken tasted as if it had still been clucking this morning. It was cut into narrow, thin slices and covered with its skin. A wing and a foot flanked the mound of poultry. A brown sauce was served on the side for pouring over the meat. The comparison to pulled pork is not completely apt as the taste is so different. We have already chosen the dishes we will have on our next visit. My only cavil is the beer "selection"--stale Tsing Hao or fresh Budweiser. "Which would prefer Monsieur, piss or pee?" I guess one can't always have everything.
  8. Was at an Italian restaurant last night and did a side by side tasting of Moretti and Peroni. The Italians should stick to wine. They do that so much better.
  9. Evidently "steam" doesn't refer to the way the beer is brewed. Take a look at Anchor Brewing homepage
  10. Good question, rstarobi. I just looked at the bottle. Its actually an ale and says nothing about it being a steam brew.
  11. I'm so glad its not just me that thinks these beers change noticeably from year to year. Yeah, the Jubelale a couple years ago was an all-timer in my book. I wonder if the change was intentional or not, don't really know enough about beer making to speculate. Maybe they need to start printing vintages on the bottles. Anchor Steam, Brooklyn and Sierra Nevada all have vintages on their year-end bottlings. I just had my first bottle of this year's Anchor Steam. Very dark and very spicy. I overall liked it but I am afraid that with certain foods it might taste like root beer.
  12. I picked up a six-pack of Anchor Steam's Xmas- New Year beer today. I haven't tasted it yet but will report on it when I do.
  13. I'm in for two unless I'm on trial, in which case it will be just one.
  14. Was that Carmine Biase? I just went to the Ledger website but couldn't find the obit you referred to.
  15. How about the past forty years? Hockey's delicatessen in New Brunswick.
  16. I envy you all. We had plans, including reservations for Comme de Chez soi, to visit Belgium in 1989. Unfortunately, while celebrating my birthday at Docks on Third Avenue about a month before we were supposed to leave, I had a very serious gall bladder attack while savoring the key lime pie. The gastroenterologist I soon visited advised me to cancel the trip and recommended surgery, speaking words I have never forgotten: "Bon vivants can't have gall bladders, Mr. L."
  17. A fancy shmansy restaurant in Hoboken--whooptie dooptie. Give me the days when the best place to eat in town was the Clam Broth House, with clams from the unpolluted Shrewsbury River, Ruppert Beer chilled over ice and clamshells on the floor with the sawdust. If that makes me a nostalgic old fart, so be it.
  18. There is a difference between describing someone's behavior, which is what Tommy did, and calling someone a name, which is what Plotnicki did. Name calling has the effect of ending any productive or intelligent conversation on a particular topic. Describing behavior continues the discourse. Name calling either ends it or unproductively diverts it.
  19. Super Administrators take notice: Jaymes has the most perceptive comment on this thread. Personalities will come to the fore no matter what the topic.
  20. I think the terms Jewish cuisine and haute cuisine are mutually exclusive. But take a look at Machlin's 'The Classic Cuisine of the Italian Jews" anyway. Its unusual to us descendants of Yiddish speakers, but its really not haute.
  21. Does anyone have suggestions for retail outlets in the New York metropolitan area where it is possible to obtain artisanal and small brewery beers from the U.S. and other countries that have not gone stale on the shelf?
  22. I like them both very much but prefer Sierra Nevade Pale with Indian and Szechuan food. Had a bottle of Orval with a Belgian meal tonight. Wonderful aroma and good, bitter taste.
  23. The closest major wine store to me is Grand, in Astoria. In order to serve the ethnic panoply of western Queens they have added sections with wines from the three listed countries. I, for one, know nothing about the wines and wine growing regions of these nations. Does anyone have any knowledge or suggestions? I suspect there are real values to be had.
  24. "You Ain't Heard Nothin' Yet" by Andrew Sarris "The Dred Scott Case" by Don E. Fehrenbacher
  25. Why not try the Station Cafe on Sutphin Boulevard in Jamaica? I recently picked up two excessive force cases occasioned by an NYPD drug raid on the joint. I can't personally vouch for the place, however. I've never been in it.
