  1. I don't drink copiously, but am often sent free drinks by the bartender.  I think in hopes of encouraging me to one day become a copious drinker?

Regardless, free food and drink often shows up.  I wonder how much of those plates are mistaken/extra orders that the kitchen would just throw out (or consume) instead?

    u.e.

from experience, i'd say this happens about 50 - 75% of the time. if an extra is made of something by accident then it makes more sense to give that single item to a single person rather than to a party of people. and, mistakes/misfires happen all the time.

  2. not sure if my jewish dad counts (he'll be 65 in april) but he LOVES to cook & is great in the kitchen. his love for cooking came after he & my mom divorced and he married his 2nd wife (aka the "Y" <why!!> wife), who was a chef. now he & his "z" wife get to enjoy his love of cooking nightly (as do i when i make it back east). AND he makes a mean "Bouchon" roasted chicken AND has given TK some tips for improvement

  3. In 2007, I will eat more home cooked meals

I will make something other than meatloaf & lasagna

I will findmore local foods to cook & eat

I will learn how to tend to my garden

This is the year I will try at least 10 new recipes

I will taste consistantly delicious food!!

I will useevery bit of produce from my garden

I will give away to my friends what i can't

I will be more organized in the kitchen

We will eat more meals together

My child will continue to be an adventuous eater (fingers crossed!!)

I will teach my daughter how to make fun things in the kitchen from scratch and how to tend to our garden

I will read all the books i didn't get to last year & maybe even some new ones!

  4. I work at a small winery and we are toying with the idea of setting up a wine club. initially, there would only be 1 shipment mailing and one allocation mailing. meaning, in the spring we'd send everyone a 3 btl selection of our spring releases and then they would have the opportunity to buy more at a "club" price". in the fall we'd send the members a notice of what their allocation is for our fall release and give them 30 days to take their allocation.

let me know what you think... the cost of the spring release would be about $120 and the fall allocation would run about $500 or so.

any and all thoughts and advice will be greatly appreciated!!

  5. Geez!  We're flying to SFO Saturday to spend a week at Sea Ranch.  Beside frequenting any and all wineries in Sonoma do you have any current tips?  (Of course Bouchon is mandatory.)

sea ranch is BEAUTIFUL!! but make sure you bring LOTS of WARM clothes - it'll be COLD!!

  6. Jscarbor, I used to work at Ladera vineyards on Howell Mountain -- their owners personally give the tours and the tasting involve barrel samples in the caves. It is really a one-on-one situation that does not involve the classic "tasting room" hard sell with t-shirts and tschotskies and whatnot. Just great wine in an historical, gravity-method winery with a stunning view and fabulous wine. From there, you could head down into St. Helena and hang out at the bar at the Martini House, where many other local winemakers spend their evenings. It will also provide you a great meal.

From there, you are close to the Silverado Trail which is a bounty of exquisite "off-the-beat-and-track" wineries like Harrison, August Briggs, and more. The downside of wanting to hang-out with winemakers during this time of the season is that the bulk of their work is done and this is vacation time for most of them. Once the wine is in the barrels, winter is the one time of year they can decamp the valley for warmer climates (why many of them head to South Africa for two-and three-month internships).

    Hope that helps.

i was just by ladera on tuesday and bought a couple btls of the 03 napa... very tasty & a great price! what a beautiful place!

  7. And, just why did you go to the Salt House?

I was out voted. Besides, salt house is fairly new - I'm glad I went, but I wouldn't recommend it.

I had some pocky with my espresso, I'm back to being a happy camper.

i do hope you will post that glowing review in the CA forum

sorry to hear it sucked so bad... but not at least i don't have to think i might need to check it out...
