  1. Its my turn to bring dinner for the bocce team this week. of course i couldn't just throw some sammiches together... so... we're making chili & corn bread that i want to serve with iceburg lettuce wedges that can be dipped into a chunky blue cheese dressing. i've got everything but the dressing. and good & savory recipes out there?

    TIA!!

  2. FYI - regarding Silver Oak - sounds like you dodged that bullet!  For others not so lucky - just know that they don't have a tasting room right now... their normal tasting room is being renovated.  They have a fancy trailer for you now (well, not fancy - VERY much a trailer).

Hey, I'm all about the wine - but if I'm paying $20 for a taste, I will NOT taste in a trailer.

I love Pride Mountain - great tasting, great location, great wine & one of the best picnic spots in Napa.

One question - I like a little nibble with my tasting.    Any great wineries in the Napa/St. Helena/Yountville general region that offer a little nibble with the wine?

paradux has some nice "nibbles" with their tasting

  3. I'm a regular stroller partier at Otto.  I love it there (at the bar) and, Emma, I'm inviting all my stroller partying friends.  You never know, you may push one of those things yourself one day.  And have a craving for octopus with celery and lovage just at the moment when your toddler has crashed in his dreaded stroller after a couple of hours of heavy play in Washington Square Park.

    They deliver!

i guess that is wonderful news for you then!!

  4. I've never had any difficulties in bringing a partial bottle out of a California restaurant. Been doing it for a long time.  Dont need a special bag either. Common sense puts the bottle in the trunk, because we do have an open container law, but to my recollection, it deals with driver access to said open container. Then again, we can buy booze at the grocery store so our laws seem comparatively liberal on the subject of alcohol acquisition (except for the 21 thing, which we had while much of the US was still at 18).

in CA the bottle MUST go in the trunk.

So, if your car doesn't have a trunk, you're not allowed to take it with you? Yikes. I generally fly to CA but I drove out this summer and violated that daily.

does your car have a "way back"? we have an suv and if we were to ever not finish a btl  , we'd put it in the "way back".

  5. beautiful mando chufi! my best friend growing up was korean and on afternoons when we would make mando (100's) her mom would tell us when they were particularily pretty that meant we would have beautiful children... worked for me ;)

    would you share your recipe?

  7. ... I failed to see that it was from his blog.  As a blogger (who often posts in the wee hours of the night/morning), I'm willing to over look the missing letter.

    Back to the spritzing... ?

thats just plain crazy... has anyone else had this experience? btw, bauer is know to be pretty snarky...

and, i wonder what other critics he was with (it'll probably show up in their blogs too  )

  8. Michael Bauer's blog entry for today in the SF Chronicle:

    http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/blogs/sfgate...=12822#readmore

"Yet the kicker came at the end of the savory course when the busser came over and spritzed the table with a disinfectant so full of clorine that it made more of an impression than the truffle risotto."

    ouch...

    1. I hope that (mis)spelling of "c(h)lorine" is yours, dvs; and

    2. Quite simply put:  ??

nope... his. he's kind of a dope anyway...

  9. We've eaten a lot throughout the area and for me it really boils down to one place: Bouchon.  I absolutely adore Jeanty (more than PJ Steak), Redd is amazing, Terra and Cindy's Backstreet are favs, we've had fun and memorable meals at Martini House and have eaten snacks from Sunshine Market and Dean & Deluca more times than I can count.  When I take all that into consideration my mind goes right back to Bouchon and the Boudin Blanc with Potato Puree, French Prunes, and Browned Butter.  With a simple starter of Bibb Lettuce with Herbs & Vinaigrette and a finish of Sorbet, I can't really imagine a meal better in the Valley.

Yeah, Bouchon has been a thought but, on the other hand I cook that stuff at home -- often from the Bouchon cookbook -- and my "regular" is a French Bistro (and I've been to a couple in France). Not that I don't believe that Bouchon is better than all those places (though our home-cooked stuff is quite swell) but it might be fun to get a little further off the reservation.

Speaking of reservations, is Bouchon already so booked up that contemplating a res for next Saturday night is absurd, anyway?

i'd call RIGHT now... or check opentable
