  1. I can tell ye, Batavia Arrak is very much allive, main market today is scandinavia, where they use it for the punsh. It's a beautiful distilate Regards. Ed
  2. It is often the case that column still rums are layed down for aging. This means that the initilal strength could be as high as ± 95.5 %. Than losing some strenght during the aging period. Fresh Pot still rums usually come at ± 80-87% out of the still. Also waiting for an answer of a real whisky connaisseur! Ed

  4. Is anyone familiar with rum in china?, any local brands, or producers known?? or is it again only bacardi and captain morgan. The only thing I can find out is that almost nobody knows what rum is, and that their local producers maily produce the typical chineese liquor called Mao Tai or Wu Liang Ye. If anyone could help, I would be be very thankful, Ed Melief

VSG seems to be the Versailles Distillery, which closed down in ± 1963 the pott still was taken over by enmore distillery, further on this is now produced at diamond distillery in Guyana concerning the CRV this is a light column still Jamaican rum from Long Pond distillery but the meaning of CRV I did not found. regards, ed
  9. These abbrivations often represent diffent so called marks or types of rum distilled at the various distilleries. One distillerie could have pott stills and column stills. On both distilation stills they are able to produce various types of rum or marks as they often call them. One distillery could have e.g. 10 different marks what means 10 different basic types of rum. Sometimes the initials of the distillery master are used for certain types of rum and or in combination with the abbriviation of the distillery itself. These abbriviations could originate from long times ago, from the time this specific rum was made for the first time at that distillery Regards Ed

    Bootz

    Bootz is a brand name of Bols which is now owned by Remy Cointreau. Bols is as all of you know famous for his liqueurs, to use in cocktails. Bootz used to be the name of their rum brandm and still is but they have made several line extentions, obviously. Ed
  11. Let me enlighten you! There can be a hudge difference in each barrel of rum. I had the opportunity to examine the whole stock of a rumdistillerie and check the quality of most of the barrels. I tell you, some really bad barrels could be found. And they better not used these. And also the spectrum of different tones was enormous. Not only rum put on wood will differ in quality but also the fresh distilled single marks of the individual distilleries will differ per batch. Just think of natural yeast and spontanious fermentation, this will have different influences each and every time. This is one of the reasons why blending of rum of different distilleries and also of different origine is done to equal out differencies. A lot of rumbottelers just want to have a standard quality each and every time for thir heavily promoted brands, so blending is a just a must, if this is what they want.
  12. in the EU it is forbidden to add anything but Caramel E150! Just to get a standerdized colour, and yes the type of caramel itself will influence the taste and smell of the rum. Just have a look at the typical UK rums, Old navy and so on. I always tend to think the darker the rum the more "Pirate"like the rum looks and therefore this attracks the "real men" to drink these. In fact most of these Demerara rum are haevily coloured with caramel, but low in esters! But you never can tell I still have not found the Rum Police yet. Ed

Charlie, i will get back to you when I am at my office, but I can tell you that their are loads of smaller rum bottlers, and each of them have their own specific blend who only sell locally/regionally, or others who just sell exclusief rums. So if you're japanese collegue is looing for rums which nobody in Japan is selling, I absolutely can help you out, but I have to know what exactly you are looking for. By the way I have the Japanese version of the spiritsbook, with all the wines and spirits sold or imported in Japan, very interesting. And just some extra information: A big part of rum sold in Japan goes into the confectionery industry, and you know what: Te biggest seller are the rums from the DOM of France, because the chief patissiers in Japan tend to educate themselves in France ( Lenotre e.g) where of course they will get in contact with the Cane-Juice based types of "Rhum". So if the other caribbean islands want to promote their rums; just start a top Patissier "University!? Regards, Ed Scheer Amsterdam
  14. Dear Ed, I am afraid I have used the wrong word, of course this must be below 96% alc. You're right, above 96% alc is considered as alcohol instead of rum. By the way you do not have perhapes sailed the Japanese Islands and came across the official text of the Japanese Rum definition have you? Regards, Ed

  16. I am afraid this will be a little technical, but may be some rum wizzard could help me out. Could anyone help me with the official rum definition in Japan. I know the official rum definition in the E.U. which is more or less: *) it must be of sucar cane *) distilled beyond 96% alc. *) must have the organoleptic characteristics of rum Some one is telling me that Beta-Phenyl Ethyl Alcohol and Ethyl Caproate must be detected in the rum otherwise they can not import rum as rum, but only as Ethanol. It sound a bit odd to me! May be a link to a certain website might help me, I have not found this one yet. Thanks for the help, Ed Melief Amsterdam
