  1. Oh, I would never imply that the soup dumplings are all of Shanghai Park. However, it must be recognized that they are, arguably, the best on the East Coast. With the cold dishes, I have had highly variable experiences. The jelly fish I so hoped for was only alright. But the fresh salty tofu with chilly and the scallion pancake are phenomenal. For lunch, this simply cannot be beat. Feel free to share your favorite selections!
  2. Shanghai Park 239 Raritan Avenue Highland Park, NJ 08904 They make consistent efforts to sell the usual terrible food to white customers, but, when pressed, will joyfully hand over the heavenly soup dumplings!
  3. To add to the growing list, there's a place on rt 27 in highlands park that probably sells the seeds. Its called International food store, but its run completely by Russians. Their prepackaged makovnik is alright too. But I always go there for affordable and quite good salmon roe ($16-24/lb depending on quality; i've enjoyed selections from all price ranges). What can be better than starting your day with fresh salty soy milk and crab soup dumplings at Shanghai Park and then moseying over 5 min south for some makovnik and enough roe for the next 2 weeks?
  4. The new korean/japanese restaurant, deceptively named "Sushi Cafe" that opened on september 7th on Nassau St. next to the bagel shop and T Sweets, is an awesome lunch spot. In fact, I'm going there in a couple of minutes! (: They have a nice selection of VERY generous lunch boxes varying in price between $9 and 13. So far, I have tried their calbee lunch box and the korean seafood tofu pot (don't forget to ask for the raw egg). Also, the atmosphere is very nice, with light clean wood and very decent japanese prints. Foodwise, I would stick to the Korean, since the owners are Korean. However, I've heard them speak Japanese as well, so this tiny new place may really be the best of both worlds...

Hmm, i dont know strictly the boundaries of mercer/middlesex, but here's a brief list of my favorites within 30 min from princeton: In Princeton: Ajihei (Japanese. Great yellowtail jalapeno, chef trained at Nobu NY I think. He has good knife technique and sometimes serves uni, which is hard to find around here. For monkfish liver i always go to Banzai) Happy City (Cantonese. Fantastic crab w/ scallion ginger, singwa melon with shrimp, steamed fish, duck, etc. BUT watch out - sometimes on weekends, when the main chef is not there, they can get overwhelmed and the results are tragic. otherwise, my favorite. also, great lunch specials with english translations, despite the ominous presence of the buffet. the chinese menu is translated into english, which is really nice. but i think there also another, 'white people' menu to avoid) 3495 US HIGHWAY 1, PRINCETON, NJ 08540 (609) 919-9881 Of course Conte's pizza, Hoagie Haven, and Downtown Deluxe are such classics, they hardly need mentioning... A little north on Rt 27, aka food route: Schechuan Ace (Obviously, Schechuanese. fantastic hot soup dumplings, hot tendon, three soy sauce chiken. beware of white people menu, ask for chinese translated one, it has most of the real things on it) Udipi Cafe (South Indian Vegetarian. the only vegetarian restaurant ever liked - great okra curry and a variety of dosa. this is actually closer to Princeton than Schechuan Ace, only ~20 minutes) Shanghai Park (yummy crab soup dumplings, scallion pancakes and fresh spicy soy milk with little shrimps - curdles as you eat!!) What am i missing here? Any more suggestions in the area?
