  1. That's the sense that I get. Thank you for the comments. Looking forward to dinner!
  2. Hello! Does anyone have this recipe? Thanks!
  3. Hello. My husband and I have reservations for Monday night at Carlos' for our anniversary. There are two degustation menus. One is for meat/game and the other is for shellfish/fish. I just spoke to someone at the restaurant who said that as a rule they do not allow for substitutions. I find that kind of odd. Five courses of meat accompanied by five glasses of red wine if you opt for the pairings seems like overkill (no pun intended). I suppose that one of us could get the fish and the other the meat, but as my husband does not drink alcohol, I'd be out on the appropriate wine pairings. Has anyone been here and had a flexible menu? How about recent experiences at this restaurant in general? Thanks!
  4. Looking for a high-end Italian restaurant in Budapest? Neither were we, but my husband and I stumbled upon a gem. I highly recommend Fausto's on the Pest side near the Opera. The service is impeccable, the food is superb and the value is fantastic. It's a close second to Gary Danko on my favorites list and 1/3 of the price. 1061-H Budapest, Székely Mihály street. 2 +36 1 877-6210
  5. Thanks for all the replies! Looks like it's between La Scarola and Sabatino's. Anyone have strong opinions to tip the scales one way or the other? That's what I immediately thought of, too. Very old school. ← Ha! I also thought of La Scarola and Sabitino's. Also, Maggiano's is an option. Yes, it is a chain, but they can accommodate everyone's requests. ←
  6. Hah! Yes indeed. It's painful when she orders the filet "extra well done" and 9 times out of 10 sends it back. Of course I'm not seeking out a restaurant that readily chars meat, just looking for a place that won't collectively gasp when she puts in her request. We won't take her to Trotters. I'll check out Scarola. Thanks for the suggestion!
  7. Hello there! I've got my mom and her husband blowing into town for the weekend. She likes anything with lots of garlic and she likes her meat very, very (I mean very) well done. Her husband likes spaghetti and meatballs. I'd like to take them somewhere that has a homey or old-school atmosphere that has food that wouldn't be described as "subtle" or "sophisticated'. Any suggestions? Thanks!
  8. I've enjoyed listening to "The Restaurant Guys". You can find it on itunes.
  9. Thanks very much for the recommendations!
  10. Hello. I'm so pleased to have found egullet. I'm a new member just getting acquainted with the site. Partially inspired by Neil Robertson's amazing pastry pictures, I've applied to The French Pastry School in Chicago. This is a career switch for me so I'm going in mostly blind. If accepted, I'll have 6 months before the program begins. I would really appreciate any advice regarding preparation (reading, projects, etc.) Thanks so much!
