    "The Taste"

Re: Brian Malarkey, I wish I could just turn off the TV and forget about him. However he is unfortunately our local "celebrity chef" in San Diego since Top Chef Season 3, and he is everywhere. Half a dozen restaurants already and he is planning to expand his empire outside of San Diego... Thank you so much for the name and season - it was strange while I was watching I thought I knew him but did not give it much thought in fact I only watched the first 30 minutes then deleted - It was funny thou when my husband asked me what I thought and who the judges were that is when it hit me - we both laughed how these chefs look when they are intro and then after they have been "hollywooded". As for the show did not care for it - to slow or maybe they were just to gabby over not much of nothing but I did get bored fast.

    "The Taste"

To Maggie the Cat - I was confused about who the blonde guy was too and it hit me about two hours ago when I was explaining to my husband who the 4 judges were - he is from Top Chef - he is the guy who cooked nothing but seafood and for the life of me I can not remember the season I think it was the 2 or maybe 4th.
  3. Thank you all for answering my question - one thing I love about this site so many cool people
  4. Can anyone tell me who won fan favor? Seem to have missed it and can not locate it on the website.
  5. I thought I was the only one that hated the dirty napkin look glad to see I am not alone also the writing is so bad I could not make out what some of it said and had to read it three times before gettting it. I still miss too busy to cook that they got rid of years ago wish they would bring that back. That feature was the first thing I would always go too - with these past few months I have yet to find a "go to page".
  6. Gads! I recieved my June issue of BA and it is just as bad as the May one - A celebrity on the cover I thought the mailman put a People magazine in my mail box. I was hoping that the new edito in chef would understand that he is no longer working at GQ and people do not want to see celebrities. Also the font is still way to small and not one recipe that was even tempting me to keep this issue either (after looking throught it in the trash it went). I was hoping that maybe they would work on having the pages not look so much like ads but alas they failed again. Someone really needs to work not only on the type size but the backdrop behind. I must say that if this is the quality I will have to come to expect I will not renew my subsciption this coming December which is a shame as I have always loved this magazine and have been recieving it since the 70's.
  7. I too was disapointed in the May issue of BA the type is way to small (so small that I got a headache trying to read just the first several pages. I put the magazine aside and did not pick it up for over a week) and they have crammed to much on the pages making it diffcult to follow. Way too busy looks like they are trying to save space or someone who does not know how to edit. Some of the pages I could not tell if they were ads or stories. I am so hoping that they work out these issues I have been reading BA since the late 70's and this is by far the worst "update" they have done so far.
  8. I was really lucky my mom could cook, bake and canned she is amazing. Now my dad thou bless his heart was not very good in the kitchen but he tried. I often think my mom was a bored housewife because she was always in the kitchen trying up new recipes or "playing" as she called it coming up with something new. Our bookshelves were loaded down with cookbooks and Bon Appetit issues. Now hear is the odd thing she never really pasted anything on to me until I moved out some 20+ years ago. I loved being in the kitchen with her, but she never "taught" me. I watched her and other family memebers like a hawk but never asked questions. I learned from trail and error which I found out later that is how both she and my grandmother who was a wonderful cook learned. When I look back on my childhood I remember everyone love coming to both my parent's house or grandparent's they all knew that the tables would be overflowing with the best food. To this day when I go back to my hometown and I run into old family friends they ask if I have picked up my grandmother's or mother's talent for cooking I can only say that I am running a close 2nd to them both.
  9. Thanks K - my husband is always talking about how he likes ice wine but never got around to buying any as I was not sure if you paired it like reisling or not. So thanks for the tip
  10. What is a good pairing for food when drinking ice wines?
  11. I am surprised that no one from a army family has not posted one of my favorites Creamed Chipped Beef or SOS. My grandmother use to make the best for breakfast, my mother made it for a "fast" lunch and me I will eat it anytime! It is so sad that neither my hubby nor my son will touch it . I also love.....I know the horror.....French's mustard and sardines on a saltine!!!!
  12. Here again, they could have assumed that certain basic ingredients would be there, but they had to be adaptable. It would have made a lot more sense to give them a budget and let them go shopping at Whole Foods, as they did earlier in the season. I am assuming this wasn't allowed because if they were observed shopping in public, it would be a dead giveaway as to who had reached the finals. ← Yes i was thinking the same thing about keeping them unwraps. I also was pretty sure they to were assuming about certain ingreds being in the kitchen, I was just wondering if they took supply into thought as I said before that it seemed like if one of the final three saw something they wanted to use they took it all to their station whether or not they would use it all, as in Hosea using all six cans of caviar
  13. I have never heard any of these stories are they from the British papers? Living in the states and not one to really surf the net much I was wondering when these stories were floating around and was thinking after some other post if it was an open secret.
  14. Ok I need something clarified - many of you have said that they had months to know what they were cooking or going to do but after watching twice i do not see that happening. Seems like they had no idea what was in the kitchen as far as protien etc they were going to cook for the final dinner. Hosa grabbed two items that Stephan needed so I am thinking that it was not like they gave a grocery list to the show so they cook fix their "planned meal". I understand that they all had ideas about what they might want to do but until they saw the ingredients they had in the kitchen could they then make set plan. I think they assumed certain items would be there in the kitchen but maybe it was not not there or did not look like it was at their "peak".
  15. I was under the impression that a commercial is supposed to make you buy the product. Then again, the number of times that I've actually bought a productbased on a commercial is so small as to be statistically insignificant. At any rate, we're not talking about Diet Coke very much - we're talking about Colicchio. Oh yeah, I can't stand and wouldn't ever drink Diet Coke - even with a big hunk of lime and Captain Morgan. MAYBE with a LOT of Captain Morgan, if truly desperate. ← Yes it is suppose to make you buy the product but it first has to grab interest - and it has done just that - from the post most people that know who Tom is do not drink it hence if you see someone you know and maybe even respect his "taste" you might give it a shot. Then you have the group who will have it around because of the people who are pitching the product - I know sad but true people have things or buys things based on that idea alone "Well so and so drinks this so it must be good". Kinda like wine if all the stars and chefs are drinking it I need to have it in my kichten. Like all products it must have a buzz - the company is hoping that they can reach maybe a new market or open one back up for people who thought they did not like it to begin with and might give it a second go around. I worked for Cocoa-Cola for a few years and believe me they like all the talk. I have tried diet coke a bunch and have never cared for it - in fact i was working for the company when it first came out in the early 80's and i still do not like it or any other diet sodas on the market but that does not mean i do not enjoy the ad nor can ingore that they are millions of diet coke fans out in the world today.
  16. I thought it was a hoot so funny at the end and i took it for what it was a diet coke t.v. ad did not look any further. It did do what a commercial is suppose to do though and based on this thread pretty well - it has us talking.
  17. Ok is it just me (could be) or did the final kinda fall flat once Hosa's name was said? It was like Hosa is the new top chef now to your local news and weather. If i remember correct in the other seasons everyone seemed so excited over the new winner. As for Carla she was always my favorite - i just about died when i heard Casey telling her to make it special but alas that is another rant all together
  18. Buying foods that are not "in season" or "what is that". Things that were not even really even "known" yet to our part of the world up to and including spices. Thinking how funny it is now that there is several different types of oregano now when i was growing up it was just plain old mcCromick oregano same with olive oil. When talking about or getting derli meats for example ham it was either bakes or boiled did not even know what Parma or pancetta could be let alone placed on a pizza? My mother cooked what was in season because that was always the cheapest and easiest food to have on our table. Omg to see a tomato past Sept. and it be half way decent was unheard of in the late 60's and early 70's. To me a curry was a stale curry powder that someone would dump in a sauce and pour all over a dried out chicken breast! It is no wonder i would not even anything with the world curry in it till i was in my mid-20's and in England. I must say the best new food trend is people are asking questions wanting to know more about different types of food and being able to finding the correct ingredients.
  19. If you have lost and I mean this very strongly a little weakness gone, then yes then this openers work, saying that up front this is what I found. My father had ALS aka Lou Gerhig's (he passed away this past march at the age of 76). These types of openers were o.k. at first, but when he becamer weaker -nothing helped. Just beginning able to get the gadget onto the lid and trying to turn it while holding the jar was hard. And my father was a very pridful man and hated admitting that the tools I had bought no longer work. Bless his heart he batttled for a long tim but his left arm and hand gave out first and he was able to do a lot of things right handed - openning jars was not one of them - thank the good people he lived around his street (he had lived there since 1959) helped him all the time. So find something that fits your grip and is not too bulky - what works for one person does not always work for another - it is a matter of the hand strenght. Hope this helps.
  20. What is Tom Yum soup??? Dtom Yum Usually Goong(shrimp) is a Thai Hot sour soup. Usually eaten with a little bowl of white rice. It is wicked hot and has such bold flavor that it's great when you have a cold or flu. Also good is dtom kha gy (chicken) a milder coconut milk mushroom soup. Toby ←
  21. What is Tom Yum soup??? I totally agree about the dairy thing when my stomache is acting up - then again the hot and sour seems to be like a chicken soup for me - it cures all illness even the grumpies!
  22. Expect for the minute rice my mom would gladly like to swap daughters - she does the giblet and egg in her thanksgiving gravy also, when I was little she would have to pick these out for me. As for Wondra I love it - I use it for a lot of things - my husband (bless his heart) loves great northern beans. He takes homemade cornbread and pours the "pot liquor" and makes a meal out of just those two things, and sometimes I can not get the juice to the right thickness - just use a little Wondra and magic happens!
  23. Hot and Sour soup always helps me no matter what when I am sick. Ramen noodles is something else that I crave only then also - I am not sure why thought.
  24. A big bag of white lily is about $1.89 here - you can get all there products for a reasonable amount. I have found that if you make friends with the person who runs the section at your local supermarket ie. flour, sugar coffee, bakery and breads etc.. they can order it special for you. I have special orders at several different markets in town - hey make the right friends and life is good. You can also go to www.whitelily.com . The Whiye Lily Whole Food Co. is out of Knoxville, TN Their cornmeal is the only cornmeal I had every seen growing up and what I use today. I bought a 2 lb bag that Kroger was running a special two bags for $3.00.
  25. My apologies for not being more specific. I don't have a problem with her accent. The sound of her voice means "Her show is on" and since I personally very much do not like her style of cooking and her style of interacting with guests and the audience I don't want to have to even hear the sound of the show being on. Alton Brown is based somewhere in or near Atlanta and I am a big fan of his. ← No need to say anything else my mom's voice bothers me too! and believe me I some times wish there was a control volume when I am around her. It is something about people in Savannah (bless their hearts), but they tend to sound or push their accents more - don't know if it has to do with the tourist or if people think that is how we are suppose to sound down there, but it is a whole nother animal down there - my accent gets really thick once I hit Chatham County (savannah), but once I come back home I sound like a normal human being. Believe me nobody says Y'all that much - what cracks me up the most is that Paula Dean (thou has been good for the city- money wise) has not lived in Savannah for very long about 20 years ( 20 years is not long according to people born there not my view - it is a very clickish town) - she is from Albany, Ga. You were talking about her show - my understanding is most of the guest are people who are visiting not locals - I heard the tickets were very pricey - also there is a tour you can take (don't ask me why) and that people from all over line up! As for Alton Brown yes he is from up here and that is how most southern's speak.
