Ribs again.  Charlie asked me to make some more since the last batch was gone so quickly.  He said If I made two slabs and grill some hamburgers, that I wouldn't need to cook for a while. I am getting ready to do the hamburgers in a little bit.  I made my favorite kind of coleslaw and didn't realize I had never made it when Charlie was around.  He made fun of it until he tasted it. Now he thinks I should make it all the time. When I was little someone at church often brought this kind to potlucks and I always liked it better.

Reading the past 24+ hours of this thread, my previous opinion of you is cemented, "strong woman crossing the plains', but in 2024 rather than 1860.   I'm so very impressed with you, Smithy, for "holding the fort" or Princessmobile in this case.    Amazing job.

All good thoughts for you and your darling.

    Majorly agree.  She's amazing.

  3. @RWoodYour wedge salad is calling my name.  I'm hungry for a good salad with really good tomatoes.

Mouth is healing nicely (I think).  It's been easier than the last surgery.  Still have a ton of stitches but since they're only on one side I can chew most anything now if I keep it on the non-stitch side.  Very ready for these stitches to go away.  They should dissolve in 2-4 weeks.  I didn't take pictures of a lot of meals because they were mushy and boring lol.

Lasagna that I made to have ready for the day I had surgery.

  4. What is happening to us that we aren't talking about this?  It's Easter Sunday at 5:00 pm my time and no thread lol.

We don't do a big family thing on Ronnie's side anymore for which I'm totally fine with.   So, it's the two of us.  We bought a big bone in ham on sale last week but decided we wanted lamb chops so ham went in the freezer.

    SV chops

    Spinach/garlic/butter/parm cheese concoction

    Deviled eggs

    Scalloped potatoes

    Maybe some artichokes...but maybe not

    Key lime pie for dessert

  5. This past week has been the Week of Shelby eating what she won't get to eat for a while starting tomorrow.

Panko fried shrimp--shrimp was on sale at Sam's.  I'm sad I didn't buy more because they were really sweet and good.

I ordered a few things from Goldbelly to cheer myself up lol.  Subs from White House Subs.  Good.  You get 4 huge sandwiches that we are still eating on.  Along with that I got a couple of things from Hebert's Specialty Meats-Duck and andouille gumbo and seafood étouffée.  I should be able to at least eat some of the soup parts and if I can't, it's an easy meal for me to make for Ronnie.

You may know that asparagus is huge in Germany. The season starts now and is very much anticipated. I know it’s kind of unpatriotic but my first Spargel of the season didn’t come from our town, but a small village in the Palatinate. We had a chat at work the other day and my secretary told me that a farmer in her town grows the best asparagus in the region. I ordered to kilograms (at 16€/kg, which is pretty decent for the early season). So …

2 kg of very fresh asparagus, just peeled and the trimmings cooked into a braising stock with salt, sugar, lemon and butter. I eat one or two raw as a cooks treat. They burst with liquid and flavor.

  7. Thank you so much to each of you.  I can't decide if I'm dreading it more this time because I know what's coming or what.  I'm definitely taking this week to prep.  I didn't do much of that the first time and I regretted it.  Going back through the dinner thread during the time period of the last surgery it seems like I mostly made the same foods as I always do but added in something that I could eat.  I'm going to make something like a lasagna to have for the first day so Ronnie has something and I don't have to cook because I won't feel like it.  I mostly survived on wine I think LOL.

Ronnie bought some on sale Boar's Head mortadella the other day.  No pistachios, just black pepper corns.  I didn't want it to go to waste so google to the rescue.  Anthony Bourdain's Mortadella Sandwich --I browned the meat like the recipes says but did the rest on the panini maker.  And I added some decent sliced cherry tomatoes.

For dessert Mae Dawson's Hoosier Sugar Cream Pie  a recipe I ran across that @Ann_T posted back in 2019.

  8. Beautiful fish, @Ann_T.  I need to clean the top of my stove but before I do you've inspired me to fry some up too.

Life is once again throwing things at me.  Long story short the bone loss that was occurring in my mouth did not benefit from the painful and expensive laser surgery that I got a few years ago and I'm now having to get another tooth pulled and another bone graft.  Eventually after it heals for many months I'll be having a post put in and then eventually a tooth.  I'm so upset and frustrated I can't even express it.  This week I gotta peruse old threads and write down ideas for foods I made back then and was able to eat.  So the next several days I'm gonna eat what I won't be able to eat for a while.

    Arrrrgh!!!!!

    On to food:

It doesn't really go in this thread, but -- Shelby, it made me think of you.  It's true that I don't know you or Ronnie in all the ways that matter for this, but I immediately thought, OMG KANSAS KIDS COULD GET A MODULE FROM YOU TWO!!! Plus, Chum . . . .

Well I sure wish this had been around when I was in school!  Learning how to clean and butcher and cook --invaluable lessons.

They were both delicious but we got bombarded with flies. Not no see ums but actual flies. It was awful. They ended up moving our table but it did not help much. I asked them to hold our main courses until the sun went down to see if that would help. It did, but the experience was extremely irritating and put a big damper on the meal.  One of the hazards of eating outside I guess.

After sunset they brought the main courses. Post sunset view

No one else dining at the restaurant saw it but us.  Our server saw me pointing up and taking pictures so came over and caught some of it but missed the rocket part.

Ronnie said he felt like eating fish for dinner yesterday.  I didn't want to fry it....and we just had fish piccata ....I remembered I had some leftover broth from cioppino last time so I rummaged in the freezers.  I found mussels, halibut pieces, scallops and squid.  I get nervous doing squid.  Ronnie doesn't much care for it unless it's fried--and fried well, not fried rubber bands.  I ran across a recipe for doing it in the IP.  Saute onions and garlic.  Add squid (cut into circles) and tentacles (sorry mom--she does not like things with tentacles lol), salt, pepper and a some red Chile flakes.  Cook for 4 mins.  Add half a jar of my canned tomatoes.  High pressure for 22 mins.  QR.  SO tender.  I wasn't going to put it all in the stew, but I did and Ronnie loved it.
