The rains have lessened-slightly-so now my mint has started to grow. I planted a creeping mint last year, and it ended up drowned in my yard. So, this year, I planted spearmint and chocolate mint, and the came up when it was safe.

I've been to three of the top five (Pupusería y Restaurante Salvadoreño, El Barzon Restaurante, and Taqueria El Rey) and all are excellent, with El Barzon being much fancier than the other two. If you visit any of these, try to save room for desert at Ice Cream La Michuacana (Vernor, three doors west of the Mexicantown Bakery).
Have you ,or anyone else, been to Taqueria Lupita's or Evie's Tamales? These are two of my personal favorites.

Love those pistachios!
We hosted a gathering last year, and one of the couples attending is from the Detroit area. They brought a similar-looking box of goodies. Many others brought desserts, but these were the only ones to completely disappear.

Question-I know cabbage can be pickled, but can spinach be pickled? I want to do spinach in a basic vinegar/salt brine, Can leafy greens be done?

@liuzhou- Thanks again for all your input. I may not be tremendously smart, but I am a quick learner.

This has been widely covered by the media in the past - certainly last year and the one before. A search of Google News turns up more background than you probably need.
Personally, I think the whole thing would have faded away if the protesters hadn't fed it so much publicity. Although people do eat dog around here, it is becoming less and less common as a new middle class take up pet ownership as a status symbol.
I'd also be wary of soliciting photos. Apart from copyright issues, many of the photographs going round are fakes sponsored by the more extreme animal rights people.
liuzhou-(I do not know how to highlight your name, sorry) Thank you for setting me straight on this. I was looking forward to your input.

Seriously-
My editor claims there is such a thing, and wants a story about it. Naturally, knowing of eG, I volunteered to do the story (if, that is, no one jumped on it before I did). I also figured that this might be an interesting thing for the rest of us to follow, too. So, can anyone give me info? photos? You can PM me if that is easier, since I would like to use photos in the article, if and when I get the assignment.
--Thanks!

They can be used in stews or tagines, or chopped finely and added to couscous dishes or salads.

www.bbc.co.uk › food › preserved_lemonThought it better to quote an expert!Thank you! I preserved a batch of lemons in salt too. But I was-until now- unclear as to how to use them. BTW I also preserve ginger in vinegar. They are wonderful.

I was eager to try something, so I made macaroni and cheese using ramen noodles instead of elbow macaroni. No pictures

Unless you know something about their itinerary that I don't, they'll be nowhere near Detroit; assuming they'll be on 30 by then, they'll cross 75 near Lima, OH.
Thanks- I don't always read or pay attention the way I should

The best place for dim sum is CAI in Chicago's ChinaTown. They have some interesting bakeries there too. And, IMO the absolutely best Chinese teashop between my area and the Mississippi is Dreaming of Tea in Evanston.

Since your rout connects to I696 and I75, you can stop at American Coney Island for what is in MHO, the quintessential Detroit culinary experience:

I have mixed feelings about this article. I am glad that it points out that there is good food to be had in Indy, but am concerned that it concentrates on Hipsterdom and Brooklynomism, from the viewpoint of a Noo Yawker, so to speak. (Full disclosure: I did live in the Greater NY region for many years) It does not mention nor consider the other facets of dining in Indy, although it made passing references to A FEW places OUTSIDE of Fountain Square. (I've resisted posting about "American Dining" places in Fountain Square, on the whole, because of this Hipsterdomness thang that I might contribute to if I did, although I've bought stuff from places there too on a regular basis; plus, the "ethnic" options available there aren't addressed anyway - Peruvian, Thai, etc) But hey, it isn't as if it is a verboten subject so --- have at it.
By the same token, thanks for posting this, IndyRob. It is a useful and nice article to read notwithstanding my caveats above.
40 minutes ago, IndyRob said:It's funny. Here's an argument where I agree with all sides.
It's just one writer who made a comparison to what they knew. Literally nothing is said about product - only perception.
I read both articles. And I agree with everything they said in the eater article.

I love trying a new Chinese restaurant in a new city. I especially enjoy finding Chinese-Chinese places rather than American-Chinese places. And, it really makes my day when I find a dim sum place that does good phoenix talons!
