  1. One emerging and growing area of contention is rising levels of alcohol in wine. There is a strong view that this fashion is causing homogeneity in the flavour of wine and that they lack subtlety and finesse. While global warming is likely to be one of the causes, there is also a view that this trend is being driven by the preferences of influential writers (did I see Robert Parker's name mentioned earlier?).

Good point Nick, although I believe that very few wine consumers (at least in Australia) care any more for Parkers opinion, at least not on Australian wine anyway. I believe most consumers have found other pastures for their wine opinion grazing.

  2. Tasting panel video, from reviews in April 2012.

Initial response from the tasting panel was that it is an excellent wine that is probably just past its peak but will drink wonderfully for quite a few more years.

  3. Went along to the early bird tasting at Magill estate this morning. Very pleasantly suprised at the quality of this Grange from such a difficult vintage.

Dark crimson. Nose tight and unyielding but eventually giving up some redcurrent and cherry. On the palate a lovely fruit sweetness, muscular and balanced with good acidity wound around a stiff backbone of gun barrel tannins.

  4. Under vendors instructions, I put out a call on Twitter and facebook the other week for help tasting through some wine they wished to have evaluated from the cellar.

A few people threw themselves on some bottles and popped around to try out some wines and help me iron out bugs in my video making processes.

This one is the edited version (under 1 minute) of the 2009 Glaetzer Amon-Ra Barossa Shiraz.

  7. An unusual blend of varietals and vintages, this is a very pleasant wine with a nose of rasberry, cherry and a hint of black pepper. A well balanced wine with good body with flavours of sweet small red fruits, a little plum, some soy; finishing fresh and reasonably long.

    90 Points.

  8. Opened a bottle of this around a month ago. Makes a very interesting style contrast to the rest of the Penfolds range.

Yes it does. As you are probably aware, the vineyard for this wine is in Metropolitan Adelaide, surrounded by housing on all sides and in the past has contributed to many of the early vintages of Penfolds Grange. This wine is the only single vineyard wine in the Penfolds stable.

  9. Complex and well endowed, this excellent shiraz has a rich and vibrant bouquet of sandalwood, sour cherry and a hint of spice with traces of redcurrant. The palate is searingly intense and plush, framed by well integrated buttery oak, with redcurrant coming through very dominant on entry and with layers of chocolate, plum and coffee lingering on the finish. This seemingly youthful shiraz is still quite closed and would benefit from at least 5 more years in the cellar.

    94 Points

  10. A powerful and wonderfully balanced shiraz. The palate is chockers with chalky tannins and massive depth of fruit. On entry, searingly intense flavours of ultra fine black fruits, earthy chocolate and a hint of nutmeg, superbly balanced and framed by fine, integrated oak.

    96 Points

  11. Yum, I love my sparkling reds. A classic.. it exhibits vibrant aromas of plum, truffles and cherry. The palate fills the mouth with intricate layers of densely packed, juicy cherries and fresh liquorice with a hint of mulberry and mushroom/truffles. Superb length and a lingering finish of blackfruits.

    (94 Points)
