  1. The BBD on the product is for Feb 21 (tomorrow) so if you have it in your fridge check the date.  I would think that most of this product is long gone.  Very short notification.

  2. Went to store beside Husband's place of work when I was picking him up.  Haven't been there a while and totally forgot it was because they have gone self check out.  At night there is usually no check outs open so you are forced to go to self checkout.

The lone cashier stands there and watches you do her job, and when i got to the banana's there are 3 options to choose from???  The cashier tells me what I have is the 3rd button.  i grumbled something about how the heck I am supposed to know that, so the girl came and showed how the button has a number that matches the sticker.  She was really nice so I thanked her for the "help" but all I could think was "am I getting trained for this job?".

I used to chit chat with some regular staff and would see them run the groceries through and we would discuss the crazy weather or whatever.  It just feels horrible now and I miss that staff interaction.  I feel guilty for shopping knowing that there are people who used to work there but don't anymore because they lost their job.

  3. I have been having issues getting the app to connect to the oven but didn't have time to fiddle with the phone set up so I left it and set it manually but it bugs me to have the light on.

Last night when I was reheating something in the oven I heard my phone ding when it got to temp? I checked the phone and voila, it was connected so I was able to turn off the oven light while it was working.

I really like the app as I often put a frozen leftover in the oven on my way out to yoga class.  When I am done the class I turn on the oven through the app.  By the time I reach home, dinner is almost ready.   It is very diappointing to not have the app working.

  4. I took my MIL to a small grocery shop near her home.  They were forcing everyone to go to self check out.  I begged for the cashier to take her.  It is far too confusing for my MIL.  The cashier assured my MIL she can do it, and the cashier would show her.  My MIL is 90, with arthritis, poor eyesight and no patience.  I predicted disaster and yes it was. We don't shop there anymore.

I work for a small grocery chain and am thankful they have not brought in any self checkouts.  Every week we get a summary of customer comments and there are a lot of people that say thank you for not getting into the self checkouts.

  5. I am saddened to hear this news.  I lived on Manitoulin when Kerry and Anna came up for their epic summers.  Visiting with Kerry and Anna was some of my fondest memories on the Island and I got to enjoy some of the fabulous treats.  How they packed all their personal stuff, 3 people and the kitchen gear in a car was a mystery to me.

@Kerry Beal thank you for that great list of Anna's topics.  I will spend many nights reviewing them and all your Manitoulin topics to remember Anna with a large cup of tea at my side.  You were truly lucky to find such a good friend in Anna.  She was a lovely lady.

    Cheers to Anna.

    No, no need.

Edit:  Think of the interior of the oven as a big sous vide bag.

I was at the Rational demo centre in Gatineau a couple of years back and they did a sous vide demo in one of the combi ovens.  The way they explained it was since the inside of the oven was sealed up and full of the steam it is considered a sterile environment like the sous vide bags.  As long as you don't open and close the door during the sous vide process it works great!

  7. There is a review of this smokeless grill on eater.com.

It looks like my tiny little closet of a kitchen won't be getting this new gadget.  Space is way too limited.

It does seem to be smokeless though which is a nice surprise.

Kerry found a real treat in the freezer:

I don’t usually like sweets this early in the morning but I’ll always make an exception for a kouign-amann (courtesy of @Alleguede.

What a magical freezer you have....

I have been enjoying your visit on the Island and I am not looking forward to it ending....hope you get to return again soon!

I'm arriving in Toronto on Wednesday about 3:30 pm. I'm planning on taking a bus to NOTL but would not turn down a ride if anyone is arriving around that time and renting a car.

Also, is there a plan for dinner on Wednesday?

My sister mentioned that the Go train goes from Toronto to Niagara now.  You might want to look into it.

    Saturday Night Dinner

Beth Wilson (allergic to mushrooms) - did I mention the wonderful mushroom soup that Dave makes?

I loved mushrooms most of my life.   Unfortunately they don't love me back.

I will watch you guys enjoy his mushroom soup.  I can't wait to see what he does for dinner this time.

  11. I work in a hospital where scents are banned but there are still many who ignore it.  Sometimes you can't enter a room for the many visitors all "bathed" in different scents.  I am delivering dinner to the poor patient and I wonder how they can muster the will to eat when they aren't feeling well to begin with and they are bombarded with the scent of an overpowering garden of scents.

I am not allergic and I like to smell nice perfume and cologne if it isn't overpowering...but when I enter these rooms I have to hold my breath or else the scent will get in my nose and I will smell the rest of the day.  Sometimes this happens at breakfast too..  There are signs and reminders everywhere but it makes not difference.   It sends some staff home for the day...So disruptive.

  12. I love that it has this keep warm cycle.  My old slow cooker did not do this...it kept on cooking til you got home to unplug it and that made for some interesting roasts.  I have only tried a few things and can't wait to try more...

I am curious about the baking of banana bread in it, what cooking setting gets used?

  13. Thanks to all of you egulleters,  I am now the proud owner of one of these handy machines that I would never have come across without these wonderful threads!  My slowcooker bit the dust a couple of weeks ago and DH said why don't you get one of those machines you talked about from egullet.

I am really liking the Instant pot and will have to review all the notes to see what everyone has done with it.

What I really like is my DH has taken to experimenting with the Instant pot too and tonight was his first attempt at stew in the slow cooker.  He sauteed the meat and onions and added the rest of the ingredients, put it on slow cooker and went to work.  He didn't know that the default time was only four hours on the slow cooker setting and we got home after 8 hours.  I see the clock reads 4:36 when I get in and realize that it has been off for four hours and 36 minutes...Oh Oh I think, dinner may be something else if it has cooled that long.

I got the thermometer out, lifted the lid and it read 167F!  This machine has been so well made and is decently insulated that it held the temperature for over four hours.  Now I don't recommend this technique but it has been a pleasant surprise to find that what I thought was a big mistake turned out to be a perfectly cooked stew and a DH rather pleased with the new addition to the kitchen.

Thanks guys!  Now I have some reading to catch up on, and some counter space to fill up!

I think we could hook something up that pulls down from the ceiling - that's what I need to do at my house.

If this was possible!  Sign me up!  Kerry, I always said you are an enabler :-)

I have added this darn appliance to my wish list on Amazon, so half considering it now.  Hoping the price drops a wee bit more.
