  1. You went to Chuk Yuen and you didn't get the cheese lobster?!?!?! Perhaps the TST location of Chuk Yuen is catered more for tourists, however the Happy Valley location that I MUST visit whenever I go back to HK is definitely filled with locals. The cheese lobster is definitely the best lobster dish in the world for me. There is nothing like it anywhere else. They do the sauce to perfection. Rich, creamy and exteremly addictive. I am not a big fan of Sharks Fin soup, however they seem to do it really well at Chuk Yuen, definitely a must order for me whenver I visit. We also ordered some Mantis Shrimp (aka Pissing Shrimp) with fried garlic. You can't go to a chinese seafood restaurant without ordering the steamed grouper.... I'm not a fan of geoduck, but I was told it was excellent as well And just to mix things up a bit, Seafood Claypot Rice and some Satay Beef (which is done really well, especially for a seafood restaurant). And to end every chinese meal, the complimentary dessert. Red Bean Soup and Do Hu Hua. As I stated before, Chuk Yuen is always a must for me whenever I go back to HK. The cheese lobster is worth the plane ticket to Hong Kong alone...
  2. great thanks! Looking forward to your pictures! Hope you can upload your pics here as opposed to facebook
  3. thanks for all the pics canuckle head, hope you can post some more pics! and hope you take lots of pics from your Japan trip as well! Thanks!
  4. thanks for the update aprilmei! When I used to live in HK, I used to visit the Citic Tower location for dim sum and usually the Sun Hung Kai location for dinner, it just worked out that way for my family for some reason... Someone on another forum mentioned the head chef for Victoria Harbour went to a different restaurant...have you heard anything about this? I will hopefully be headed back to HK this feb/march. Can't wait for my trip!
  5. oh I can't believe you went to Victoria Harbour! This is a must visit for me every time I go back to HK. How much was the crab meat XLB? $30HK for one? Unfortunately for me, ast time I went they didn't have it! Which location did you go to?
  6. Thanks for the reply! You are certainly do a wonderful job with the camera you have! The pictures are more then presentable! Thanks for the tips! Do you ever feel timid when taking pictures of food?Especially at 'fine dining' or 'starred' restaurants?. When my girlfriend and I went to Joel Robouchon (mansion) on our last trip to Vegas, we really wanted to take pictures of the food (once in a life time experience!) but definitely chickened out especially with all the people watching you... Its okay though, that meal was so amazing that it is ALWAYS in our minds, would've been nice to take pics of the food however! On our last 'nice' meal we were at Michael Mina in SF and had no problems taking pictures (well to be honest my girlfriend took the pictures) but the server was definitely very nice and accomadating (when he was serving the lobster pot pie he even waited for her so she could get a good shot at times). Even though she was the one snaping the shots, I still felt a little cowardly. I guess its just something I need to overcome? Have you ever had any looks or reaction from workers at the restaurant? Or do you tend not to care at all? I'm especially curious about your experiences in Europe, you have some amazing pics from there.. Keep up the good work!
  7. BryanZ this is an amazing thread, thank you for sharing. I wish I was as talented as you in writing amazing descriptions and posts. What camera were you using for the pictures?

  10. if you're in macau ah leung I strongly recommend the dim sum restaurant at the lisboa hotel. it is a little more expensive however is well worth the money imo.
  11. thanks for the updates so far! just a quick q: what camera are you using to take the pictures?

  13. oh this should be great, cant wait to read your posts! hope you can visit some of my favs. like the cheese lobster at Chuk Yuen in Happy Valley, or the Pork Chop with steamed vegetables at delicious kitchen in Causewaybay. Have fun and bon apetit!
  14. whats the green onion/ginger stuff called in chinese??
  15. I don't live in canada so I don't have a reccomendation for a place that serves it, but you will find it in a restaurant. It is restaurant food and it is usually served in a korean restaurant that does Chinese style korean food. Look for a place that serves jampong - the 2 usually go hand in hand. ← RIght on the money!! Theres a korean style chinese restaurant west of yonge on steels, i'll post the name as soon as I remember. Pretty good place! Its a chain as well I think, I know there is one location in Missisauga...
  16. What percentage do you guys tip when you dine at these star chef restaurants? or is there a service charge already included.... Great write up frenchfoodieinHK, I can't wait till my next trip to HK. Will definitely try these 2 places out! Thank you!
  17. I went there last week with a group of 4. Restaurant was pretty much full. Reservations probably required on a fri/sat, although I didnt have any and just walked in. Very small restaurant. Food was very good, each course getting better and better. I think i had 8 total. Presentations were amazing. Courses definitely came out very slowly. There was pretty much no sushi at all and just one sashmi course (4 pieces in total. 2 lobster , 2 amberjack?). Interesting how for the sashimi course they gave 2 different soysauces, one had a quail? egg in it, that was for the lobster. Nothing out of the ordinary, maybe except for beef tounge. Man was that nice and tender. Service was very friendly, waiters really trying hard to give you and enjoyable experience. Be patient as they may not have the best english... I would go there again. However I would go to Sushi Kaji again first.. Last note - I went with a Japanese friend(girlfriend's sister's boyfriend) and before while we were deciding somewhere to eat he mentioned how all the japanese restaurants he went to in TO were not japanese at all, and he disliked pretty much all of them. We were about to eat at redlobster (they really like eating americanized places) but while we were waiting for a table, I mentioned this place and said I heard it was quite good. We took a cab there and right from the get go I think he was pretty impressed. He defintely enjoyed the food a lot, and said it had the same taste as things he has had in Japan. Definitely a better choice then redlobster that night!
  18. Anyone ever have the "Triple Seared" Japanese Kobe at Bradley Ogden?
  19. Ah Leung you are awesome man! I love this fried rice so much! Going to try this soon.
  20. I don't think Shanghai is at the level (YET!) to have a decent Michielin Guide. Perhaps in about 5 years, then there can be some serious discussions. I believe Jean-Georges is number 1 for Zagat, of course it would be! There aren't too many restaurants in that level yet. Laris is a cheaper alternative and Sens is a bit overrated. I want to give Jean George another shot however, but I feel its too difficult. Having been to the one in NYC, its hard to enjoy it in Shanghai. The scrambled egg caviar is amazing though, i'll give it that!
  21. Having lived in Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong (for comparisson sake however I will leave HK out of it), I would have to say Shanghai is way ahead of Beijing. I don't think the food is terrible in Beijing, I just think that nothing stands out as great nor memorable. I went to at least 5 different places where everyone says they have the "best" or "original" kao ya, but none of those places created the urge for me to go back! I had peking duck in Shanghai at this place Naning Jiu Jia, and thought it was just as good as any of those places in Beijing. I frequent Naning all the time! I think there are a lot of "interesting" and "traditional" places in Beijing, but nothing to create a fuss over. I think Shanghai has much more to offer and places that are definitely a lot more memorable.
  22. Peking Duck House is good, just pricey. Make sure you get the soup as well, very tastey.
  23. Great stuff Igott! I was in Vegas just a few weeks ago for my girlfriends birthday, and ate at many of the restaurants you dined at. The highlight of my trip was of course The Mansion. Will talk about it more in the JR thread. I enjoyed Daniel Boulud more then the one in NYC. I thought the food was just as great but the atmosphere even better! Got to sit outside and watch the Wynn lake show. Probably the suprise of my trip. I always make it a point whenever I'm in Vegas to visit Commanders Palace, and again it didnt dissapoint. Service there is always top notch, and I never get old of the Commanders Salad or the Souffle. Breakfast at Bouchon is definitely a must! If only I woke up early enough, I would have gone there everyday! I was thinking about visiting Auerole, just to compare it to the NYC one, but glad I didn't/won't visit it after reading the comments here. This was my 2nd trip to Vegas this year, and there may be a 3rd comming up in December. Will definitely use some of the advice in this thread! Thanks to all!
